Shane Pinto being suspended 41 games for sports gambling

From the statements from Pinto and the NHL I think one can infer there is more to the story but it most likely is personal and everyone involved is keeping quiet.

1. Don't place a wager at work, it's not that hard.
2. 41 games is way too harsh for someone who violated rules but did not bet on hockey. I think 25 games is more appropriate for something like this.
Not at all too harsh.

Sports gambling is bad news. The NHL should get out of that business.

What a ridiculous policy, he didn't even bet on any NHL games. It's literally legal. Suspended 41 games for having a DraftKings account and betting on some NFL Games? The NHL continues to be run by dinosaurs.

I don’t really understand why player can’t bet on other leagues

What is the thought process?

Hopefully Friedman or another insider will explain this because I can't come up with any reason on my own, beyond they don't want their own players falling prey to the dangers and addiction of gambling, but fans on the other hand...

Look, I have no objection personally to gambling. If you like it, fine. I'm not a gambler. But if you're gonna tip your toe into the gambling business and then turn around and bust people for doing exactly what you're advertising. Then don't promote gambling.
Or, hear me out:

Promote gambling to fans of the game.
And prohibit the players whom effect the outcome of those bets from being involved.

I don't get why this is such an issue

Interesting to see how this plays out considering he's technically unsigned. So would that mean his suspension starts, once he signs?

My guess is to prevent cap circumvention.

Players getting suspended for off-ice issues don't count towards the cap. The Sens could have signed him right now, have him serve the suspension with no cap hit, and have him back in the 2nd half of the season with a much lower cap hit.

Right - so instead they can sign him at Game 82.

Cap circumvention avoided.

Let's be honest. This is a PR suspension. They threw a large number at him and added games he was never eligible to play.

true but now say he signs a 1 yr 1m contract right after the 41st game. Wouldn't that mean the Sens only get hit 500k for the cap hit since its pro rated?

There's got to be more to this story if he's taking accountability and didn't bet on NHL games. I'm so curious now.

It still doesn't make sense.

How do you count games towards a suspension when the player never had an NHL contract? He couldn't play those games if he wanted to, it's no different than suspending an injured player retroactively.

Yes exactly what I meant

lol they were pumping their players full of pain killers and sleeping pills with no prescriptions at will. dont think this is the reason

He didn’t bet on hockey so how could he be affecting the outcome of his bets?

Because the league said it had nothing to do with NHL games?

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but that tweet by Seravalli said
"League found no evidence that Pinto made any wagers on NHL games."
Note the bolded. That (at least for me) leaves the door open he still placed an NHL related bet.
