Every team will question his character and integrity now.
PS:
In a statement, the Senators stood by Pinto on Thursday and said in part: “Shane is a valued member of our hockey club; an engaging, intelligent young man who made poor decisions that have resulted in a suspension by the NHL. We know he is remorseful for his mistakes.” The Senators said that they “fully support” the NHL’s rules on gambling, remain committed to Shane and will do whatever is necessary to “provide him support to address his issues.”

“When the time is right and with the league’s blessing, we will welcome him back to the organization and embrace him as one of our own,” the Senators statement said.

I've seen guys purposely stomp on another player's ankle with their skate blade and get suspended for half as many games as Pinto. I've seen guys target the head with their hits, lead with their knees, and slash people in the head with their sticks and get fewer or no games. I've seen zero consistency in the reffing of the league, leading to questions about potential corruption. But god forbid a person who is not under contract legally bet on a sport he doesn't play. Better suspend him for half a season because it "looks bad".

Never change NHL.
The NHL seems to be alleging he passed information to a proxy bettor who bet on hockey, at least according to Seravalli.

Shane Pinto and the Ottawa Senators have both made statements accepting the suspension and supporting the NHL's rules on gambling. I don't sense a lawsuit from the NHLPA incoming.

Call me crazy, but I think there was an existing rule on the books, and he broke it.
There probably is some rule on the books he broke. I get him playing nice too, he probably did something. All we know it wasn't NHL related. I do expect the NHLPA to at least look at it though. Cut the suspension length maybe. Again, I'm I'm not defending the dude since we don't know.

Well if they're going to suspend a guy for half a season, "no further comment" on what he did is pretty ridiculous. Pretty big difference between providing insider tips to people and if he put $100 on the Chiefs-Chargers game from his couch. Is this a criminal investigation or a bad policy? The NHL does itself no favors by giving zero details and then saying it will not comment on the situation.
I'm sure Pinto could release a statement at any time. Seems like the NHL is doing him a favor by keeping the details quiet.

While under contract? That would be bad. If he wasn't under contract he's not an employee of a team, so that can't be an issue. Maybe he's using information not publicly available? That matters in securities trading, but I'm not sure about gambling.

Investigation started in the summer, so likely dating back to last year.

Pinto did, it basically said I messed up and look forward to getting back on the ice. So the fact he owned it tells me this isn't a case of him betting on say an NFL game because he would fight it.
Servalli is hinting that Pinto was giving inside info re the Sens to a 3rd party so they could make bets on the Sens games.

So, is it safe to assume the NHLPA is going to appeal this like they do for any suspension handed out to a player for almost decapitating one of their other members?

There is no SEC for gambling. Using insider info isn't illegal, but the sports books really hate it and try to get you banned if you really take advantage of them the same way they do their clients.

The NHL can essentially suspend him for whatever they want related to gambling, so it could be a butthurt sports book that ratted him out

That's interesting. If it was something of that nature, it would seem to be a serious breach of trust. Irreparable, depending on the circumstances. Sounds like we're still in speculation territory, though.

I find it hilarious that the NHL suspends their own players of gambling OTHER sports while investing in BILLIONS of dollars in the compulsive gambling industry.

What a joke. Let’s advertise gambling every 2 minutes to kids and ban our players for gambling on OTHER sports.

Now my question is, is it a 1 off thing. For instance a team dr lets it slip to a buddy that the whole team has a raging case of the shits and that buddy slaps down some money against the team. Or is it a case of a pattern of bets that would indicate Pinto was aware he was supplying inside info.
