Yes! That is what the Canucks drafted him for. Nice to see him get a goal like that for his first NHL snipe. :handclap:

Exactly

This is his bread and butter NORTH/SOUTH with speed.

He sure wasn't showing that his first 9 games. Hopefully sign of things to come.

Count me as someone who thinks he should have been sent down... but he looked great tonight even outside of the goal. Had lots of chances, was physical and made a couple really nice passes.

Looked solid all night. Laid out some big hits and took the puck to the net. He and Burrows seem to mesh well together. Now needs to keep driving to the net and the goals will start to come.

I feel bad for his junior team in Calgary. They could have potentially made a push for a championship if Virtanen was returned, but now there are rumors that they may blow up the team and trade Sanheim for a huge return and build for future now

really.... are you serious? He wasn't even respected much here anyways, I doubt they would have really pushed for anything even with him. B.S. Screw Calgary (hitmens) also.

I would have sent him down. McCann looks light years ahead of Virtanen at this point. He'll be the better of the two players.

disagree. McCann has been better then no light years. Virtannen has been good in his own right and so has McCann. His puck possession is better then Virtannan, Jake plays a very good zone entry and physical game honest north south game. He's average 4 hits a game, with 10 minutes of ice time, and he yet to have those bone head giveaways like McCann.

They've both made some glaring errors, but it's to be expected. I'm a little more worried about McCann, simply because of his size and strength. I hope he keeps his head on a swivel.

Its possible the Canucks still send him back to save a UFA year but it needs to be before 40 Canuck games are up.

In two or three strides, this kid is like a runnaway freight train...the only young guy quicker off the mark is probably McDavid...but once Virtanen starts taking it to the net like he did last night, he'll embarrass more than few veteran d-men....scary to think what he might be like at 23-25, barring any injuries.

Hopefully he's working with the same power skating instructor that helped Horvat with his first few steps.

I am really liking virtanen these past two weeks, he looks like a player who is starting to get comfortable.

Had his first fight the other night, had a goal taken off, and had an assist, good chance he might pull the horvat situation and explode in the second half of the season.

Also love kids who crash and bang and show a ton of heart, these players usually have long NHL careers. Not sure if he will be a superstar in this league, but I love the way he plays the game.

Props to virtanen.

Yeah, I love the way this kid plays. One thing I'll say about his game yesterday is he doesn't need to be fighting career AHL goons. He has nothing to gain fighting scrubs - that's what Dorsett and Prust are there for.

Doesn't have to and doesn't have to. I love it that the youngster does it! We need more power forwards of the old school kind. Some guys just has to play with an edge. Just look at Lucic, when they forbid him to fight he suddenly fails in scoring too. It is just those kind of players that has to play with an edge to be good.

Why was Virtanen scratched last night? I cant find anything about an injury. In fact nobody is talking about him at all like he disappeared off the face of the map.

Hurt his hand in a fight with the Devils' Bobby Farnham....think they said he was game to game.

I'm sure he's fine. WD just likes to bench the kids and this is a perfect excuse.

I thought you knew buddy, you have by far the most responses in this thread, not to mention when the Canucks played the Devils it was your time zone.

He was "healthy scratch" but some thinks it's a minor injury from his fight, so he was scratched. Wanted him to rest it a few days.
