Kid was on beast mode tonight. Played his way onto second line minutes. He will not play like this every game, but tonight's game is a prelude of why we selected him over more skilled players, and why Benning made that risk. Kid was outstanding, it was too a point were the Habs players had to somehow and some of them had to adjust when he was out there, it was like they knew I better get the puck off my stick or else make will send them flying.

Congrats to Jake earning his first NHL point tonight. He made a nice 3 foot pass at his own blue line to his linemate who did all the rest to score on a great individual effort.

Could you be any more hurt about Virtanen

If you are going to argue baised hyperbole, then what is the point?

Kudos to Jared Mc Cann who had a very good game. I think he probably stays. :handclap:

What? you're not going to discount mccann's goals based on lackluster net minding.

That's how points get handed out in the NHL.

Most of this fanbase spent a week complaining McCann didn't get an assist in his first game on a goal tipped in by the opposition.

He had his best game and registered his first NHL point. Geez.

Virtanen raised his game vs the best team in NHL right now and showed he can play when given ice time. Played over 15 mins and had an assist, a plus, 2 pims and 7 hits.

Good game for him to prove to the coaches he should stay

I love his NHL upside and LOVE the way he plays. I am very curious to see his fate this season. We will soon find out cause hes at 6 games now

His opportunity over his next few should be higher if prust is going to miss any time.

Nothing is more embarrassing than pretending to be some teams fan and trash talk them the entire time.

Go back to your maple leaf boards cause that is all you care about.

What a god awful post

Eh, some people just get so entrenched in their original viewpoint and aren't capable of updating based on new information.

Jake is going to be a longer bake before his offensive game rolls around. Right now McCann is playing with a ton of confidence and it reflects in the amount of offense he produces but also in some of the mistakes he's made.

Jake has so far been very focussed on playing 'safe' hockey. This keeps him in the line up but also lowers his offensive opportunities. As he plays more games he should become less cautious and start to take more offensive chances. Considering he is 6 games into his NHL career at 19 it isn't that surprising that he's still taking it all in.

Anyone who wants to run down a 19 year old kid 6 games in because he hasn't looked offensively dominant has misplaced expectations. Jake's game will always be about his speed, physicality, and agitating style. His offense - when it comes - will make him a very versatile and useful top 6 player, even if he's not an elite scorer.

So is Virtanen a Michael Ferland type of player that likes to hit?

Would not compare him to Ferland but he does seem to love to hit. And he hits harder than I have ever seen a 19 year old rookie hit. Might even be one of the better in the league already. If he grows into some offense he will be a unique talent for sure.

Right now he can easily fill a bottom 6 role with spells into the top 6 when he is "on".

jealousy my friend

Your personal insults and misguided sour grapes have been duly noted. He needs to go back to junior. Saves the team his ELC year as well. Mc Cann should stay up. He is much closer to being NHL ready than Virtanen is.

He hasnt been 'on' in any way offensively or otherwise except...........hitting. You dont keep a guy up in the NHL just to hit when you got all kinds of other prospects in the AHL trying to get that chance. All of whom have put their time in junior and the minors.

You tell them.........sorry, Jake Virtanen 'throws hits' so he gets that spot and you have to stay down in the minors. GMs dont think that way.

If you step back and look at it objectively, there is no actual argument as to why the Canucks would keep him up here. He isnt ready.

I guess I can look at the bright side. I put up with the Cody Hodgson fanboys telling me he was better than tavares and his lack of success was a giant coaching / management conspiracy for FOUR YEARS 2008 to 2012 , I can put up with the Virtanen fans giving me flack for 2 more games before he gets sent back.

9 minutes a night in the bottom 6 is not being given an opportunity to be "on" offensively. And he does more than hit. I just responded to his hitting because a question was asked about it. I think he is tracking to remain in the NHL. You may think differently. It is a fine line either way and arguments can be made both ways in regards to what is best for his development.

You might consider taking the post in the context it arose from. I made no mention of Jake's hitting as the only reason he is in the NHL.

And then you drag Hodgson into it? How does that relate to Virtanen?

I go back to the Tom Wilson example.

It may not kill his development to stay up at 19 in the NHL.

But I suspect in 2-3 years, there might be regret about the decision if his offensive game is not developing as hoped (which appears to be the case with Wilson).

I am pretty sure a lot of organizations in the NHL would have sent Virtanen back.

Such a terrible decision

So he finishes his checks. He still should be back in junior and gain some more confidence.

He hasn't done much in terms of offense for this team.

I think this is a bad decision as well. Let him dominate juniors, something he hasn't really done already vs playing limited minutes in the NHL. He can skate and hit, but was there any questions he couldn't do those? The question is his offense and I don't think keeping him in the NHL helps that.

Yeah, I think it's kind of a short-sighted move. Try to get something from him now and make the playoffs rather than develop him to his best state.

I mean so far he's just been doing a lot of hitting, but they didn't draft the kid to be a grinder.

But can hope it will turn out for the best. Maybe without the pressure of going back he'll play better. Though still won't matter if the coach isn't giving the guy any minutes.

I'm certainly not unhappy, but as a Canucks fan I am surprised he's staying up. He fits in the NHL physically and is playing a safe game but he hasn't really stood out otherwise. I too would have liked to see him have a big year with the Hitmen before going pro next year.

The Canucks must believe the offense will come. I think it will too. Just don't think another year in the WHL would have hurt.

Fans have talked a lot about his hitting but there is nothing out there to suggest that is the reason the Canucks kept him up. Slow down.

Not comparing the players.. Different positions.. But lots of us were saying the same things about horvat last year. Then he took off.
