Like I said, I predict that it will end up something like 2 X 9.5M, and they just punt it down the road, when more certainty on future caps rises are there.

Why the f*** would we give him 9.5M for two years so he can simply accept a 9-10M QO and go straight to FA after year three anyway?

This doesn't solve anything for the Wild.

It really shouldn't take this long for the money being thrown at him.

At this point I'm thinking the money is secondary. He just doesn't want to be in Minnesota. He wants a short term deal, the Wild aren't willing to give him it.

What was negative about his short time in Minnesota? Fan response? No. Weather? Hah. He appeared to get along fine with the teammates. If he wasn't happy with his center, he thrived with Zuccarello.

Why doesn't he want to be in Minnesota?

I dont think he hates Minnesota. It has to be that he doesnt want a 4+ year deal that doesnt get him top dollar. He's clearly looking at Panarin as the model and he wants that kind of money (11+ million), and doesn't want to wait 5 years.

Between the Kaprizov negotiations and the contract buyouts of Parise/Suter that will crush this team for the next few years...Minnesota's management just can't seem to claw their way out of mediocrity.

Somebody tell guerin that they are now in the central and not playing the 4 worst teams in league 3 out of 5 games like last year. Can this guy even get 70 points a year when he plays those 4 teams 8 times a year and not 32 times. He needs to prove it in 82 game season and in the central. Guerin shouldn't go long term

It isn't as bad as it sounds over the span of the buyouts, not ideal but something we can plan around.

It's pretty bad considering 7 players are UFA and 3 RFA after next season. There's gonna be a lot of entry level contracts on the roster that season.

It looks like it's 4+ years for peanuts or you sit the season out.

Why doesn't he want to be in Minnesota?

Probably doesn't want to spend his upcoming prime years on an average team who are going nowhere the next few years (see their cap problem). From Foligno's spittin chicklets interview Kaprizov comes across as an ultra-competitive dude.

Plus if you're gonna be on a team that doesn't have any chance, might as well be in New York, or S Florida, or LA, or any place with a higher profile than Minneapolis.

They can, it just might not be in the direction we’d all hope

The alternative was probably to keep parise and suter on the team and still have the same cap hits. Both had no trade clauses so 3 bad years vs 5, remember our GM didn't create this mess, he dealt with it ahead of time before things got worse, nobody is cheering for it but given the situation and our need to get younger I think it was a solid move.

Anyone can tell me why the Wilds opted to "forfeit" one of the year of his ELC? I read somewhere that benefited the Wilds but how?

It was supposed to benefit us because he wouldn't be eligible for arbitration or offer sheets because he didn't play enough. Clearly it didn't matter.

if worse comes to worse and Wild don't sign him and don't trade him, Kaprizov is going to lose a ton of money. No GM in their right mind will sign a 27 year old with 55 NHL games of experience to a max contract north of $10m/yr. I doubt very much anyone in the KHL is going to pay the equivalent of that for more than a couple years.

Just sitting on an idle Kaprizov will suck hard for the Wild--it'll be horrible--but for the reasons people have been saying an unsigned Kaprizov isn't all that valuable in trade it's not going to hurt the Wild as much as it'll hurt Kaprizov personally. At least the Wild will have that extra $10m in cap space. Even if he comes back to the NHL he's going to make a fraction of what he would have if he'd just stayed and played for the 5 years (at what some psychotic said is peanuts $9.5m) then signed a second contract for fewer years but more money.

I am not following this. If he would still have a year, he'll be playing at his ELC rate the upcoming year, still would be RFA after that. Probably be eligible for arbitration/offer sheet by then, but at least he'll be more properly evaluated.

I mean i would've undestood this if it was a condition that Kaprizov himself demanded to come over.

It's not an issue of proper evaluation. He's being offer over 9M per year, and most Wild fans are good with that. No one here is concerned about "overpaying" him. The issue is he just doesn't want anything over three years (or maybe now it's that he wants a ton of signing bonuses), and that doesn't work for the Wild. That was supposed to be something that him not having arbitration rights helped with.

And yes, Kaprizov himself did demand to sign the ELC in such a way as to burn the first year before stepping on the ice, because he wanted to cash out sooner. He probably didn't count on the Wild refusing to offer only three years, the Wild didn't count on him only wanting to sign for three years.

And anyway, him being on his ELC for another year would mean he would have arbitration rights next summer, and only be two years away from being a UFA, which would have helped him and hurt the team immensely. So burning a year the way he did still helped the Wild, it's just that Kaprizov's side is refusing to sign at this point.
