If Pulju and Caggiula need to go down..

Lucic - McDavid - Eberle
Pouliot - Nuge - Kassian
Maroon - Draisaitl - Slepyshev
Hendricks - Letestu - Pitlick

Yikes...

I honestly dislike grooming Drai as a winger. Now we are breaking in 2 rookies in Caggiula and Pulju when Parenteau and Frk could be had. Just awful

This angle does bother me.

It really looks to me like the team was hellbent on playing Draisaitl in the top 6 and they've forced 2 rookies into the lineup to accommodate that.

Yak wasn't going to stay here under any circumstances
Maybe so, but the last few days worth of moves have been really suspect from Chiarelli. Russell doesn't move the needle on defense at all and not signing Versteeg creates a hole in the top 9.

This leaves us with two rookies on the 3rd line to start the season. Hopefully it works out, but it's not what I had in mind.

Versteeg was fine but we can easily find someine better via waivers free agency or trade

Marincin is a better hockey player than Gryba, full stop. While he is not considered to be better than Gardiner by most Toronto fans the consensus on their board appears to be that Marincin belongs on the top pairing paired next to Morgan Reilly.

Thank you. I guess when you are a team that gives up Petry for a 2nd, you can afford to trade MM for Air. I can't wait for Chia's next big move. The 'believers' are going to be scratching their eyes out here soon when he pulls a Sequin like move with one of the top forwards (McDavid, Eberle, etc.).

If there wasn't a questionable move I don't think I'd ever get to see a few of you guys

No doubt.

Look at our opening game roster last year and compare it to now.

The Oilers have the most balanced group of players they've had in the last decade. Balance=Winning

Will some of you guys go away if the team does well and you have nothing to ***** about?

So let me get this straight, the sky is falling over a guy who was trying to get into the swiss league this year?

Today's posts have been fun to read through

Yes.

The sky is not falling because Versteeg isn't here. He would have provided some nice depth, but it isn't that big of a deal.

Many things can happen in the next few months.

Slepyshev, Caggiula and Pitlick had great training camps and are being rewarded.

Puljujarvi worries me, but maybe he'll figure it out with a little more time up here. If not, he can go down when Pak Man comes back.

What does Talbot have to do with Condon?

You call the Maroon trade a "big deal", but you ***** about the Marincin and Yakupov trades? And Versteeg, of all people, not being signed?

Pretty much. I'm annoyed we didn't sign Versteeg, as the added depth, and experience would be nice, but rallying the troops against Chia over this is silly.

Caggiula and Benning were probably promised ice times a la Schultz is my take from all of this

I think shifting Drai to wing has less to do with depth and more with them wanting him in the top 6, and thats the only way he's going to be there is by being on the wing. They could just as easily put him at centre on the 3rd line and put Caggiula on the wing, but they obviously want to try having their best players on their best 2 lines.

I can't believe you just mentioned 0 NHL games waiver wire Frk, when complaining about putting rookies in the lineup. Good riddance.

Woah man the Leafs are stacked at defense! Where did they finish again last year?

So versteeg about to sign with cgy for 1 year under 1 mill... Meanwhile were throwing pulu to the wolves again and caguilla is our third line centre, or second/third line winger.

We chose to sign gryba though... Wtf.

This really seems stupid from a fans perspective...

I guess you don't know what depth is.

Apparently neither does Detroit, or any of the other 28 teams that didn't claim him. In fact, the only team that did is the one who has had to use waiver wire fodder in its top six for several years running due to being in a perpetual rebuild.

You don't claim a 20-goal AHLer for depth. Every team has a player like him, including this one.

Pulju is the more valuable piece. We cannot afford to ruin his development as we did to Yak. Parenteau and Frk are temporary. That's the point I'm trying to make.

Why would you believe Puljujarvi is locked into the roster for 82 games? If he looks like he belongs by Game 9, you keep him up. If not, send him down. There's nothing to prevent that from occurring.

That's great, but how was he on the Oilers? Top pairing? Right now, where would he be playing in the lineup? Would he be effective on this team, with this coach? Was Chiarelli in love with his fluffiness?

There's a lot more to hindsight than just looking at how a guy might be doing on a completely different team.

I've been really consistent saying it was bad move from day one, I'm not pulling any hindsight B.S.. I was a fan of the Marincin - Petry pairing, if Marincin was still here I'd be trying to put him with Sekera and seeing how it worked and I'd have Davidson and Russell on the 3rd pairing.

Also Babcock seems to have grown fond of Marincin, I don't see why McLellan wouldn't feel the same way. The prior management group was trying to push him out the door before Chia got here, I'm assuming for his first couple months here he relied on the prior regime's opinions a lot more then he does now.

Gotta say I am fairly disappointed. Doubly so because its Calgary that got him.

Sure he wasn't amazing in preseason, sure he is injured already. There is no doubt the Oilers would have been a stronger team with him in and just his attitude would have gone a long ways. Now instead the Calgary Lames are a significantly better team because there forwards are bunk.

First move by Chiarelli I actually think is a significant screw up. Not including the Reinhart/Marincin fiasco because I am reasonably certain that one was the old guards last major decision.

EDIT: Marincin stuff. Not sure where it came from and have not followed the string just am randomly going to point out that many in both Edmonton and Toronto didn't give him much of a chance to break into the top 4 because the leafs were so deep on LD much like the Oil. If Marincin makes the top 2 or 4 of the leafs right out of camp one year removed, no matter how bad the leafs actually are that really shows how terrible the decision to move him for nothing really was.

Tossing away top 4 defenders is garbage.

Still looks better than last years'.. if someone goes down then someone decent will be coming up as well.. Khaira, Lander etc also Chia is allowed to make more moves so trade is still an option

Well I've learned 2 things in this thread. Mike Condon is as good as Cam Talbot, and Martin Frk, a 0 game NHL vet is a better bet than a couple of 0 game NHL rookies.

I'll see you later HF Oil, time to take a break from this madness.

what's with this growing anti-Caggiula sentiment? He's more than NHL ready. He's played great at center so far. I get the Puljujarvi cynicism since he's 18 and was very inconsistent, but Caggiula was fantastic. At 22 years old, he's a mature prospect. At the very least, if he struggles at center we can play him on the wing. Either way, he's on the team. He's made it.

A team with top 5 prospect pool in Carolina did. The Oilers don't have player like Frk. If there was, then name one.

Why in the world would you risk ruining Pulju when it's clear he's not ready? Frk and Parenteau would be brought in for temporary solution on the RW. We can look for a better solution later.
