So versteeg about to sign with cgy for 1 year under 1 mill... Meanwhile were throwing pulu to the wolves again and caguilla is our third line centre, or second/third line winger.

We chose to sign gryba though... Wtf.

This really seems stupid from a fans perspective...

How exactly is Puljujarvi thrown to the wolves playing on the 3rd line? Are the Jets throwing Laine to the wolves? The Leafs doing the same to Matthews, Marner, Nylander? The Flames with Tkachuk? All those guys are probably going to be on the 1st or 2nd line for their respective teams.

Lol.. we are seriously letting Calgary just steal versteeg? After trading yak for nothing? This team... you couldn't make this stuff up.

Sky is falling because of a guy who was going to play in the Swiss league and a guy who will be in the KHL within a year or two?

Am I the only one who thought Versteeg wasn't that good in camp? Sure he would have been nice as a vet, but the sky shouldn't be falling over losing out on a guy like him.

Hopefully Slep takes pool's spot in a few games. I still have high hopes for Slep. Cant understand why we didnt give Versteeg a contract... guess we're going young again. Doesn't seem like that big a deal hopefully someone steps up. Cant wait for tomorrow night!!!

I said it in the Versteeg thread and I'll say it here. The sky isn't falling because of Versteeg the player, the problem is this was a clearly avoidable problem that Chia apparently has had no interest in solving. If he knew Yak was gone ASAP (and based on that return, he must have), then why on earth would he not have a replacement good to go? The only logical explanation is we're throwing youth and rookies far up the lineup without regard for their readiness...again...

As is the Oilers way.

I don't think people realize that Parenteau and Versteeg may not be good but they are still better than breaking in 2 rookies. That's where the frustration is coming from.

There are a few Flames fans who say that Versteeg has character issues. Whether that's true or not, who knows. If he does, maybe it's better he's not on the team.

what's with this growing anti-Caggiula sentiment? He's more than NHL ready. He's played great at center so far. I get the Puljujarvi cynicism since he's 18 and was very inconsistent, but Caggiula was fantastic. At 22 years old, he's a mature prospect. At the very least, if he struggles at center we can play him on the wing. Either way, he's on the team. He's made it.

I've got nothing against him, and I hope he does well, but banking on a rookie is not smart, and we should have learned that by now. Especially one going from less than 40 games over a year to an nhl season against nhl defenders.

I love his game, and like that he made the team, but if that's he case I believe pulu should be sent down, and versteeg should have been signed.

We're now hoping a rookie can round out our top 6 scoring, and play reasonably well on the third line.

It's moreso depth on the right side. From preseason, we lost two right wingers. No matter what anyone thinks about those particular players, depth is depth and I've yet to hear a convincing argument that tells me depth and competition for spots is not good (besides cap space which isn't a problem for us).

Frustrating that we again go in to the season with huge question marks. I really thought we were done with this stuff. With how hard it is to complete trades during the season, we are probably one or two injuries away from being a one line team that teams can match up with easily. We are also not properly insulating our rookies, again... still.

I don't really care that much about losing Versteeg because after the good game he had against Calgary's D lineup, he did absolutely nothing in the next two games.

What bothers me is that they are forcing Puljujarvi into the lineup, Drake at #3C which is a position he's still learning since he's been a winger the majority of his career and this insistence to move Drai to RW. He could have at least picked up PAP, why not? There's little room for error now when injury does hit and/or Pulju shows that he can't handle the workload.

I guess Stauffer is pretty plugged in because he said last week sometime that he wouldn't offer Versteeg a deal but would offer one to Gryba and most of us were dismayed at the time. It turns out that he was right.

Well I've learned 2 things in this thread. Mike Condon is as good as Cam Talbot, and Martin Frk, a 0 game NHL vet is a better bet than a couple of 0 game NHL rookies.

I'll see you later HF Oil, time to take a break from this madness.

The Cam Talbot example is simply to show you the value of a goalie in the trade, UFA market etc. We clearly could have had the equivalent of Cam Talbot for a relatively low price. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous.
