Someone said Stauffer mentioned Fayne for a over priced vet winger.

Could you imagine......Jarome Iginla?

Who wrote it doesn't matter when its a bang on representation of the events.

Or would you rather I post some terrible article by Staples or someone who doesn't have a clue?

People who actually talk to the team know less than someone who doesn't?

Maybe we should consult Eklund.

You don't seem to have a problem with it - you just posted an article by someone who doesn't have a clue.

"It turns out that Versteeg did not appreciate the Oilers gifting Jesse Puljujarvi a top 9 spot he didn’t deserve and opted to sign in Calgary because of it."

Bull. It's more likely Versteeg saw a better opportunity even closer to home.

dont underestimate that there was a bit of retribution on the versteeg to calgary signing. they had been talking to Russell awhile, wanted to sign him long term but couldnt move wideman to make it happen.

So you guys are actually comfortable with our RW depth going into the season?

What happens when Eberle goes down with his inevitable injury?

He could fit on the 2nd line just fine

It would require the Oilers abandoning their fixation on Drai playing the wing, shoehorning Puljujarvi making the NHL lineup, and an undersized rookie as the third line center.

Maroon would deserve that wing spot more than Versteeg, if Drais falls to 3c.

versteeg saw he had no chance. we have depth

calgary is crap

any team needing versteeg in their top 6 nevermind top 3 is draft lotto

I can't believe some are upset by the Kris Russel signing. A few months ago this guy returned a 2nd + Pollack and Jokipakka at the deadline.

Defenders like him are always in demand at the deadline and if he isn't in the long term plans no doubt we could flip him at the deadline for a decent package.

Chia had been working on signing him since the UFA talking period started in June. Managed to dump Yak for something, and get Russell to sign to a no risk one year contract by waiting him out. For contrast MacT trades a pick for Niki's rights and then way over pays a player on multi year deal that no one else would have wanted.

Maybe he could have brought Grebs back again instead.

"Inevitable injury"?

Prior to last year he missed a total of 9 games in 4 years. Are you confusing Eberle with someone else?

Must have just been putting him in with Hall and RNH and our never ending injuries it seems...

looch played either in boston. more left but enjoys right too. maroon plays either. drais plays any position.
drake out played versteeg by the distance between earth and jupiter

JP is far more valuable
slepy and pitlick bring more
kassian needs opportunities versus heavier teams

as he said, hed have been in the press box with our depth

Not looking good for the Oilers.

Between the roster decisions, and a veteran player choosing ice time over sitting for rookies, this is looking bad more on Mclellan than Chiarelli at this point

Yeah I'd rather play with RNH and Draisatl than Gaudreau and Monahan. :sarcasm:

Really don't think it will be that hard to replace Yak/Versteeg.

There's zero bravery involved in decrying Chiarelli's actions from behind a keyboard. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

Nor are there any points for sticking up for him. Not sure why you even bring this up.

Chiarelli was very clear in stating on Oilers Now that if Puljujarvi didn't work out, he'd be sent down. You're arguing against something that is a non-issue. Whether his replacement is Versteeg or Parenteau or another vet fill-in, those players are a dime-a-dozen in this league.

Again, in his words- these of an actual NHL GM who knows the market- wingers can be found everywhere. Hell, you just saw it happen with Parenteau. Unless you believe that was an event rather than Halley's Comet, Chiarelli will have another opportunity.

It makes sense to me to have a possible replacement lineup instead of having to scramble to find one. That's what the word "depth" means. Chia's now whiffed on a handful of these "dime a dozen" replacement players at a time when they are most plentiful, what makes you think he'll get his man when the chips are down?

But you have to actually believe that Versteeg/other would be a marked improvement over Puljujarvi/other to be this upset. We're essentially debating the merits of 30-point third line wingers here. That by itself will not dictate whether or not this team takes the next step in what you yourself just called a "fairly important campaign"- unless, well, you think it does. It's on you to show how if that's the case.

The issue is the philosophy of the team which continues to treat balance and depth as if they were dirty words. It's about a team seemingly unwilling to build roster redundancy and that continues to hand jobs to players who haven't earned them yet. Lots of people seem troubled by this, but I guess we've been so successful with this strategy before that it's easy for you to be nonplussed.

When the veteran is Kris Versteeg, rookies don't seem too unappealing. What were people expecting of this guy? He would have been a stop gap. Hence not being able to promise him his minutes.

And I don't begrudge the guy at all, even in rec dodgeball I like to play more minutes than I sit off, lol.

What makes you think that will happen to one of the most durable and most productive oilers over the last six seasons. Or is this just more unsubstantiated poo poo on Eberle talk?
