I think you kinda got to think about it if you can get some salary retained.
If he finds his game, well then, you probably win a Cup, the top-end of his game is really good, he's been stuck on really bad teams.
Honestly I'd think about send Henrique back the other way to cover some salary. His role is less vital than having a good goaltender in net and he and his wife get to enjoy SoCal again.
It's not just this year though, it's the next two years. With Mcdavid's contract coming up, even with the rising cap, every dollar has to be counted going forward. Anaheim might be willing to retain, but probably not as much as the Oilers would need them to.
Sure, the upside is there and maybe it nets a cup, but you also risk getting an aging washed up goaltender which could completely scuttle the cup window too. The Oilers don't have the cap flexibility to absorb another bomb of a contract at the goaltending position after the Campbell debacle.
Either way, I'm glad I don't have to make the decision if the Oilers decide to be interested in the player. Whoever makes the call will be betting not only their future employment with the franchise(and maybe the league), but also whether Mcdavid signs a new contract or not in the next two years.
