Losing two emerging prime year top four d-men for nothing is a significant piece of this team's frustrations. Took them years and trade capital to replace Larsson.

I like Murphy alot for his character, leadership, low maintenance and hard ice game. Term is tough but that's the Canadian Tax in the modern era of entitlement.
I understand that the trade will always sit poorly with many people, but Larsson was acquired to be an Oiler forever. That defensive stalwart hard minutes defender is a player that every Cup contending team has. We missed that for years after.

the RHD market is abysmal and Murphy seems competent and has intangibles.

You probably spend at least 2M on any RHD with experience that you have any faith in whatsoever, maybe more like 2.5. So spending a little extra to get a guy like Murphy seems reasonable. D men take longer to mature and develop, and 38 doesn’t seem impossible— but luckily it’s a 16 team list for the last 2 years. You really only have to worry about what a 35/36 year old Murphy looks like. I think we can project that being decently worth the money.

Idk, slightly less term would be ideal but we know this guy fits so it seems reasonable.

Vegas #1???
The planets aligned for them is the only reason they made it to the finals. Minny would have beat them and Colorado if healthy probably would have. They got the ultimate coaching bump and probably one of the easiest pathes besides Carolina.
#1 most hated team not #1 best in the League. That was the context of the post I quoted.

Replacing Murphy would have been 10x harder than replacing Dickinson. Especially with the push to move Nurse. Had to keep him and cap hit is more than reasonable.
They were both of pretty much impossible to replace with this year's offseason market. It would've pretty much guaranteed that our deadline trade assets and cap space would once again be focused on sorting up the team's defensive depth.

Both of these cap hits are reasonable. And a Walman - Murphy second pair is one you can win with.

Murphy you had to sign, Dickinson I think is less so. We keep pumping a lot of cap into Dickinson tier players and it locks us out of getting a true needle moving forward.

You can't win a Cup with just McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman dragging the entire wagon along and just token contributions here and there from others, we actually don't have enough firepower upfront.

Especially given that Draisaitl (not his fault) seems to get injured by round 3 of every playoffs.

He's American. Why are we all pretending this isn't a thing when more data points keep revealing the trend?
If I was Robertson I'd specifically ask to go to Edmonton or Montreal just to say f*** you to the USA hockey heads for leaving me off the Olympic roster. Guy was by far and away their best player before the Olympics and they STILL told him to go f*** himself. Of course he won't do that but it would be nice if he did

And thats what people need to understand, the "Canadian Tax". Sounds like u get it. I call it a cold weather tax. Basically, we have to pay a player more to come here. I wish the NHL could come up with a contract for players that each contract is the same league wide. 5 mil here is the same as 5 mil in Florida or Vegas. I know it will never happen but I'd like to see it. I'm sick of seeing a player request a trade and he lists the same 4 teams as everyone else, Florida, Vegas, Dallas, Tampa. Reminds of those " Super teams" in basketball
Agree, I think the NHL should standardize the cap system across its markets and tax regimes. Equalizing the buying power is the one thing the league can and should control. Sure it adds some complexity but the competitive balance is widening between segments of the league. The biggest being a widening stigma about playing in Canada. And Sunbelt destination teams increasingly hoovering up top talent with greater buying power and buying low on top talent with weaponized no trade contracts.

The NHL has hockey stick upward revenue growth under Bettman as its business plan focuses on growth in the world's wealthiest country. There's a blind eye to the issues piling on to its traditional Canadian market breadwinners.

They’re missing two more middle six fwds and need progression from Savoie. I think they’ll have money for one 3.5-4M winger, anything more will have to be in the Nurse trade.

I can agree with this on Murphy. I can't agree with it on Dickinson though. Loved what he did in the playoffs. Nothing about his recent results make me think he's anything more than a bad third line player. Hope I'm wrong. But I don't think he actually fills the holes that he was signed to fill. I think we'll likely be having the exact same conversation at the deadline about a 3C that we've had every season.

Right, so he doesn't sign that deal and leaves, then you have to replace him with Nick Jensen or Andrew Peeke at probably $4.5M+ with terms to be determined.
It really just feels like we're tossing out blank cheques for anyone willing to play here, which needless to say isn't at all ideal for a team that still has as many holes to plug as we do.
