In recent years, the summer of the Eichel debacle especially, Buffalo is a challenging destination for UFAs.

That isn't the only avenue to add players, however. They drafted 22(!) players that two seasons. That means they had 22 draft picks (5 1st round picks, 4 2nd round picks in the group) that could have been used to improve the current roster rather than getting prospects. And they have 3x 2nd round picks next year that were available to use last summer.

No one is advocating spending picks/prospects at a Tim Murray level. The idea that you HAVE to take every pick is silly. In fact, we are easily at the 'too many' prospect level where we simply will not have the room to effectively work with this volume of forwards in the farm system and will likely lose players to contract limits and simply not having a spot for them to work. And yes, when a player is available for cheap, there is likely an issue. It's on the GM to see what that issue is. Maybe they simply don't like the coach, maybe they are being miscast on that roster, etc.

Putting out an obviously flawed roster when you have a mountain of draft picks and cap space to resolve the problems isn't some wise sage strategy, it's neglect. And that is what this roster is: flawed and neglected. It's better because Dahlin has developed and Thompson continues his improbable rise. But with proper management and assets, there's no reason we couldn't be several points better and firmly in a playoff spot.
Who do you think they could have gotten those picks? If not at tim Murray level? He wanted to see what the team could do last year and this year.

he didn’t want to acquire/ sign a player blocking people.

Meier talk is st the tim Murray level.

While I am cautiously optimistic with the Cozens, in regards to his long term future, 7-8 year deals should be a rarity to forwards from here on out. We have a couple of inflection points, mainly Tuch's deal ending in `26 and Skinner's in '27. The HOPE is that the volume of draft picks we've used on forwards will lead to an assembly line-esque procession for our middle six wingers. When their ELC is over, bridge deals or flipped for assets should be the name of the game, keep the system refreshed and have a new group of ELC forwards to provide cheap producivity.
I prefer bridges then long contracts on players starting as teens. I want the long contract to end at 32 or 32.

whay ithink happens is Peterka and quinn are given bridges to summer 27 and you likely have the 22 first rounders ending ELCs then. From therr you are assessing the forwards.

around summer of 24-26 you are assessingg the young forwards and figure out who you can trade for future picks/ prospects

Would feel a lot better with UPL/Varlamov next season than UPL/Comrie. Varly on a 2 year deal, 3 million is fine.

Jeremy White's Super Secret Sabres Source is back, he mentioned on wgr this morning Chychrun is the one Sabres deal to bet on, the one they are most interested in. Also mentioned the possibility of smaller deals.

'Blocking' People has always been code for 'not paying for good vets'. The biggest needs have been people they don't have in the system, and they have been for years. Signing a 2 way C to help with the PK isn't going to block someone. Signing or trading for a competent wouldn't block anyone before they decided to bring back old man Anderson and the Backup Eric. Signing a top 4 RHD instead of a bottom pair one wouldn't have blocked anyone.

I mean, the decisions have to start early than that. Mittelstadt, Asplund, and Olofsson come off their bridges next year. In an ideal world you start making decisions this summer.

Don't see it unless it's a one-year deal for any goaltender that's brought in. They are not blocking Levi's path to the Buffalo crease beyond summer 2024.

How does our defense look with Chychrun?
Samuelsson-Dahlin
Power-Chychrun
Bryson/Lyubushkin-Jokiharju

I actually like the idea of putting Chychrun as an anchor on his own pairing, though, and balancing the minutes and deployment between the 2nd and 3rd pairings.

Samuelsson-Dahlin
Power-Jokiharju
Chychrun-Lyubushkin/Bryson

Lyubishkin - Joker as the 3rd pairing make the most sense imo

I think that in most games Chychrun would be on a pairing away from Dahlin and Power. But they'd adapt in crunch time minutes. For instance, if chasing a goal, I could see him with Dahlin some.

Yeah, I posted this elsewhere -- while Chych is solid defensively, he doesn't pass the puck out of the zone particularly well at all. He's more of a skate-it-out type....and does that VERY well. I can't see them taking the puck off of Dahlin's or Power's sticks except for crunch time.
