I read exactly what he said and then right after he says it he goes on to tell you all the reasons that he doesn't really believe what he said.
The Islanders will probably not make the playoffs. They have about a 20% chance. 93 points will most likely make it. But I like watching the Islanders when they are competing for the playoffs (or in the playoffs) so I'll be tuning in and watching these games. Hopefully it'll be fun. And if/when they fall out of the race, I will not be as vested in the games. I hope I am clear enough for you.

Why do you think the isles will make the playoffs?!? That’s so dum!

People keep saying it because that's how they remember it. What was happening then represented an unfinished upward trajectory while what's happening today represents an unacknowledged downward trajectory. Different kinds of frustration reacted to in a different way.

As to your final sentence, someone deciding to stay above the fray on an emotional issue (fandom is not a rational thing) says something about them. To me that requires a certain Zen-ness. No offense was intended.
We'll have to disagree on this one. And no offense taken.

Your post was reacting to those hyperbolic fans calling to tear it down now. And to suggest that if the internet existed back then, that many would also be calling for Arbour to year it down back in 1979.

Directly or indirectly the post makes the suggestion that some fans are not correctly being patient now (since that 1979 roster grew into one of the best sports teams of all time), and if they're not being patient now then it also suggests that there should be a reason for them to be patient with this team.

The next logical step is to then see if fans should be patient with Lou and the 2023 Isles. If you don't want to "carry the one" and have that conversation, cool, but it is very relevant. And thus comparing the 1979 Isles (who given a myriad of factors starting with the age of their core should've been patient), to the 2023 Isles (who given a myriad of factors starting with the age of their core and lack of talent compared to 1979 should not be) to discuss the differences in team-building is exactly what we should be discussing given where the current New York Islanders find themselves.
I really do just wonder how some fans (including you!) would have reacted on the internet back then. That's really the extent of it. I learned a lesson to be more patient. But it doesn't mean I don't believe you reach a point and need to change things up. Maybe just a longer fuse?

I get what your saying bud but I think LL is playing 4d chess sometimes and we just don't see the big picture. So I don't think LL is a genius, but I do see how his vision works and the moves he makes to bolster it. IMO, LL values defense, goaltending, and loyalty and he is a fan of redundancy. Kind of like having backups on backups. I think Romanov was brought in with the anticipation of losing Mayfield. I think he has a pretty good idea right away of whether or not a guy is going to sign and makes decisions based on that. He doesn't mind rewarding a good soldier with an overpay if they are loyal. These are all guesses by the way, nothing concrete, but even with the Horvat acquisition, suddenly JGP is down for the count and on IR? My guess is there was a nagging injury there and LL saw an opportunity to bolster the center position despite most of us thinking it was the last spot we needed to upgrade. I don't think we would have had to add that much more to the package to get Meier, which seemed like a more pressing position of need. Not saying Lou makes all the right decisions, but you can see he most certainly has a plan and definitely thinks in advance about it.
You're basically saying that Lou thinks he's smarter than he actually is. It's a lot of 4D thinking and planning only to end up with a mediocre team. He has outsmarted himself.

"Rose-colored..." give me a break. Not sure how many times I have to say that I do not believe they will make it. The odds currently say they have about a 20% chance. So while unlikely, it is not out of the realm of possibility. And as someone who enjoys watching competitive hockey, I will tune in to these games down the stretch much more than I would if we were playing for ping-pong balls. Which I gather you take comfort in.

We are currently in a playoff race. You can accept that (maybe even, gasp, enjoy the games) or bitch and moan. You do you.

And yes, there is precedent for this. A lot actually. Look at the standings of year's past when the season was approximately 70% complete (like it is now). Prorate that to an 82 game season and it is pretty accurate with how things turned out. Odds are that 92/93 points will be enough this year.

Correct but DET is "on pace" to finish with 91. I do think 92-94 is a safe bet.
The issue here for me was never about making the playoffs. Half the league makes the playoffs. The bigger issue is having a realistic chance to make noise in the playoffs. We couldn't beat the Canadiens, Senators, and the Canucks.

In the last 10 games we are 5th worse in xGA%. Only teams that have allowed more chances than us are Ducks, Blackhawks, Panthers, and Penguins during that time frame.

Teams that cannot defend do not do well in the playoffs historically. We have Sorokin, but he is merely human.

Much like you, I'd love to see the Isles in the playoffs. However, I don't want to see this version get hammered in the playoffs. This team doesn't show up to play for large stretches of games. It's mind numbing.

How dare you be a fan and enjoy a playoff race and hope they make it.

What about about prospects and draft parties! Those are more fun!

Do we have the pieces for chychrun? for Chychrun and an AHL contract.

Mayfield, Wahlstrom, 2023 2nd, 2024 1st, Salo, Bode Wilde, Bailey - They can turn Mayfield into a 1st. I think Wilde does have something left to give, just not with us as he's getting HoSang'd so basically 3 x 1sts - a 2nd - 2 D prospects and a salary dump. We have LOTs of defensive depth still with Wotherspoon, Bolduc, Hutton and Cholowski.

Ryan McDonagh would make the ideal partner for Noah Dobson. Not a fan of his three more years at 6.75 cap hit.

But would losing Bailey’s extra year in that trade AND if Nashville could retain 1m on McDonagh’s cap hit make it more palatable?

I feel he would be a better fit and cost less in assets than Chychrun.

Seems like what AZ is reportedly looking for. But what AZ is reportedly looking for seems well above what the market thinks it should be… why he hasn’t been traded. Also is the concern about him staying healthy.

I’d be willing to do it if it was Mayfield or a 1st not both. Mayfield wouldn’t go to AZ of course. Rather he would be flipped for the pick/s that would go to AZ

I love the idea of a McDonagh for Bailey - the retention would have to be a bit more to fit into next season’s cap with a 22 man roster - assuming Mayfield resigns for a little over 4.

This move would certainly improve the blue line, but it would mean no improvements upfront

To me this roster going forward at best...at very best in a middle of the pack team. I really would entertain trading both Pelech and Pullock for a nice package of younger players. Not picks, I'm talking just new younger blood. It's obvious Pelech and Pullock are a product of Troz and an ultra defensive system. They cannot adopt to a more modern style play. To me, only person on Defense I'm keeping is Dobson for now. Everyone else needs to be on the block.

Can't see McDonagh being happy about waiving for Nashville only to be traded to Long Island less than 12 months later.

Gotta push back on a little of that.

In my mind this team has 2 studs, Pelech and Sorokin. I’d never trade Pelech and not trade Sorokin unless he declines a generous long term deal.

Pulock as we know has a NMC so good luck with that.

Everyone else I’d at least listen to offers on.

I really am curious to see how the summer will go. Will Lou make moves or say "This team doesn't need any changes...we're only looking for a scoring winger.

UFAs won't come here, and the players we have won't leave.

I could see perhaps Pulock waiving to be closer to home (WPG, CGY, EDM, MIN). And I think Trotz loved him and vice versa, so if Trotz lands someplace....
