Gives me chills of Uwe Krupp scoring for Buffalo against the Pens to put us into the playoffs. Then we draft Scott 'bad de'Scissions and they draft Jaromir 'moves like' Jagr.
Another little mentioned example was the Isles beating the Rangers for the final game of the 1989 year. Leaving the Isles tied with Quebec with the same amount of points. However, the tie breaker went for the Isles. So they got 2nd overall and the Nordiques the 1st. Quebec got Sundin, Isles got Chyzowski.

Considering how focused the Isles were on the WHL though, they likely draft Chyzowski first anyway.

For starters, understanding that having an 80 year old who is stuck in his ways is probably not the best guy to be making personnel decisions that can affect the franchise for the next 5-10 years. Goal is to win now and in the future. That's best for business.
You businessman you.

Quite the rant. So, again, on the one hand they are the worlds greatest owners but, if we suck so bad that we're drawing 6K a night, that's all cool because it's about the real estate long game. Hmm, interesting. You see, I want our owner's to stress about Pulock's shot and Horvat's production to some extent. Not obsess about it mind you, you know, hands off enough to let the hockey people do their job but not so hands off that they let the hockey people sink the ship. Lou is sinking this ship with short term thinking and a misguided belief in the roster that he has cemented in place (just like they skate!).

Be nice if our owners were playing the hockey long game as well as you seem to think they are playing the real estate long game.
Didn't really see this as a rant. Certainly wasn't meant to meant to be one. My example of sucking and drawing 6k a night wasn't meant to be an indictment of the owners. Just that we can expect that at some point (all teams go through low points). Hell some people are pining for a full scale rebuild now which would mean exactly that for a few years. I have no reason to believe that Ledecky and Malkin won't continue to be committed to the team, spending to the max and trying to build a winner. We have seen many NYI ownership groups panic when the team is drawing 6K a night and threaten to sell or move the team. That won't happen with these guys. And that is a GOOD thing.

They put their trust in Lou when they bought the team. Which in my opinion was an excellent move. He/they brought the team back to legitimacy and professionalism. Not to mention some good damn hockey. Last year was the first season this regime disappointed. This year is TBD. By many accounts this is year 5 of Lou's 5 year deal. If the team shits the bed come April, and the owners re-commit to Lou and his current strategy, my eyebrows will definitely be raised along with yours. But I have no qualms about honoring a five year strategy and the man they hired to lead that charge. Especially considering that it has yielded some really good success.

Schedule Update-

NYI -
9 games out of 25 against Teams vying for playoff spots
3 games against Pens
3 games against Caps
2 games against Sabres
1 game against Red Wings

11 games out of 25 against Teams over .500
5 games out of 25 against Teams under .500

The Isles need to be over 500 in those 16 games against teams above and under 500, then dominate those games against the teams vying for position.

92-93 points will secure that final playoff spot.

Didn’t want to start a new thread for this as it could be nothing… but, I work at the hotel where the Penguins are staying and I see everyone listed in rooms except Crosby. Could be nothing but wondering if he didn’t make the trip and they are trying to keep it quiet or if he is here and it is something else. Unusual though.

edit: Nevermind my boss said he saw him. So maybe he is under a different name

He’s staying under an assumed name. Check for a Chase Cox or Wayne Kerr.

My experience is that some of the more well known athletes do just that. Protects them from fan harassment and also from media guys looking for phone interviews. Some guys don't want to be bothered on game day

Next 8 games before the deadline are crucial. If we dont go at least 5-3 you sell and dont ask for forgiveness. We did NOTHING to improve this group over the summer except trade for Romonav, who might actually be a downgrade. Get assets and make significant changes even if its for middle 6 players. Need more speed, skill and grit. Basically everything.

14-8-3 should do it.

The Islanders aren't selling.

I always wonder about this. Because if I remember correctly it could have been Pulock that was traded as both he and Toews were RFA's and one was staying and one was going. In hindsight maybe Pulock should have been traded as he probably would have fetched more in a trade?
It would indeed have been better to trade Pulock instead if we had no choice but to trade one or the other, especially with an increasingly fast-paced league. In addition, we had a good young right-hander with Dobson to take over eventually.

On the left, there were two who played a similar role (with Leddy), but if you had in mind to trade Leddy too (which happened a year after Toews), then you had to keep Toews at all costs. We miss this type of defender terribly right now.

But it's of course easier to see after the fact, but a good, visionary GM should have been able to properly target the core of essential players to keep.

If the Isles drop the next three, which has to be seen as likely at this point, it SHOULD.
Isles currently have the 14th pick in the 1st round. It shouldn't be a stretch to think they could drop a few more spots in the standings into protected top 12 territory.

Well, 7. They wrap up pre-TDeadline games on FEB 28th.

Of course, Lou SHOULD know what he's doing by the FEB 25th, I'd even say after the games against PIT and BOS are complete.

But if they win four of the next five, then things look a lot different heading to the northern midwest to face WIN and MIN, and anybody who's being sold in any capacity really shouldn't be going on that trip.

Indeed.

It's like you wrote recently with respect to getting pick 9 or 10.

But watching this team the past few games, it's sure easy to picture them going something like 11-12-3 to wrap up this season.

Will that get them into the top-12-pick land?

It's *likely* that they lose three in a row?

Well, recent play has me admittedly being a debbie downer, but did the past three games against non-playoff teams inspire you to think they're ready to come out and win against Boston and Pittsburgh?

Those are three games that are worth 10 points in the standings for this team.

If I were a betting man, I'd nonetheless wager them getting 2 points over the next three, just because.

0 games against the Panthers, who we are now chasing.
