Good for him, who’s unhappy with Horvat production at this point?

I am going to say something that might upset others here but this team is not a playoff team. Horvat being signed for 8 years means this team is going to go through a major retool process in the offseason I think. Horvat is going to be a part of that long term change here.

Time will tell if going the retool route instead of the rebuild route is the right one. If this team were to rebuild for let's say 4 years were they going to get a core as good as Pelech, Pulock, Sorokin, Dobson, Barzal, and Horvat? I doubt it.

If they keep throwing games, trade Mayfield and Varlamov for the best returns. Trade for Zaitsev if they can get a top ~50 pick coming along with him, and continue to re-tool the roster this offseason with the capital they can acquire at the deadline + moving Wahlstrom.

Horvat makes sense because it’s a long term move.

Kane is a pure rental and we’re not in position for that. We needed Kane 2 years ago when we lost in the ECF on a short handed goal.

Would be stupid to try and acquire a rental at this point. Team sucks.

Yeah if we make a move like this I will be furious we are are even more crippled going into next year and still miss the playoffs lol. It sucks but we really need to be sellers. In the offseason we should be really looking to shake things up as well.

At this point, I'm looking to make this team better for next season. If Kane is cool with re-signing, I'm down.

That would likely mean trading Mayfield and Varlamov to re-coup assets.

Same guy who said the Kadri contract was “in the drawer” for weeks.

Well, if Kane wants to sign 8 years 2.5m AAV, I'd do it
I can see it now, 41 year old Bailey passes the cup to 42 year old Kane in 2031

If we play our cards right we will have Horvat locked up for 8 years AND draft around 9th or 10th this year. We only have to drop back another 4-6 points to be where the Sabres are today.

Signing Horvat does not solve our underlying problems:

The lack of speed and execution in this forward group.
A roster that still doesn't have enough finishers.
A roster built for defense first has a coach that let attention to that detail slip away.
Horvat does not make Barzal a smarter player. Nobody can.
Sell, sell, sell. It's not too late.

If Mayfield and Varlamov can get you two 1sts at the deadline I don’t know how you can say no to that. Parise probably gets a 2nd too.

The context of these two deals would be entirely different.
I think they’d be happy with a third for Parise. Keep in mind he controls his destination.

I’d expect a second for Varlamov if they decided to trade him. Remember: quite a few top tier players could be on the move, and there are only so many first rounders that might be available.

The way I see it signing Horvat to the 8 year deal was the first step in this retool process. Selling the farm for Kane would be the wrong move and akin to what Columbus did when they went all in for one season. They are paying the price for that second round appearance now.

There is still time to trade Mayfield, Varlamov, and Parise. There is still time to continue to retool heading into next season while adding a top tier player in the draft.

I would not be surprised if the team sells but I would also not be surprised at them sneaking into the playoff spot.

See how pissed Lambert was today at the lack of consistency? Trotz was getting pissed at this core as well. They will need to continue to swap core players out and figure which players are the problem and which want to actually win.

They could abolsutely get a first for varlamov I believe, he’s be top goalie on market.

In a market that might include the likes of Kane, O’Reilly, Meier, Mayfield, Chychrun, etc? Again, only so many first round picks to go around, *and* you need a team that is so desperate for just goaltending that they’ll trade a first rounder for a rental. I’ll be thrilled if it happens but i don’t expect it.

Kings definitely would, it’s their biggest problem for a good team in west.
