I don't have a problem with trading futures for a top line forward that you lock up for 8 more years. Or, similarly, for a top pairing defenseman who you can control for maybe 10 years. That's what you hope a 1st round pick turns into. Trading a future for 2 months of Patrick Kane - I would not be on board with.

The Isles few remaining prospects should be on the endangered species list.

If Lou gives up another first with let’s say Dufour or Bolduc then LGI will take on another meaning.

LGI (Lou Gutted the Islanders)

I'd wait until March 3rd to draw any conclusions, but yeah, the last two games has sucked whatever optimism I had.

I mentioned in the GDT, at least they have an in-prime 35-40 goalscorer locked in. A few tweaks this offseason, with a better coach, I'll once gain be optimistic.

Seeing how this core has failed under Trotz and Lambert the last two years I am not convinced Lambert is the true problem. We made excuses for this core last year (most of us) but maybe that was not the actual issue.

I look at a team like the Devils playing without Jack Hughes right now and think to myself they do not have as good of a roster as the Islanders do but they have way more speed. They've got Hughes, Hamilton, Bratt, and Hischer but other than that nobody has above 30 points. They do have speed and they look like they actually want to win. The Islanders look relieved these last two years when they win. Going on three straight years of fairly deep runs can be exhausting and shakeups are needed.

The good news is I think Lou realizes that after this Horvat trade. Time will tell if he continues to retool them which he should do though.

There are so many factors involved; Trotz had an abbreviated team with COVID-IR last season, that's core. Any savvy hockey fan (which you are) can see that Lambert is inferior to Trotz. He (Trotz) extracted every ounce of winning out of this team. Now, he had personal obligations that distracted him, that's a tough situation b/c we don't know what went on behind scenes. I am confident that this team would be better under a better coach.

Hughes has been out, what, a few games. Context, NJD is a team that's peaking after a long rebuild. They are playing confident and are nearly developed. It's easy to use other teams in these situations as examples. I wouldn't use a few games of Hughes out to compare to NYI's situation. Yeah, this team needs speed, but that's not the defining factor. They want to win b/c they've lost so much (which feeds the whole rebuild diatribe, I know). Moreover, I think NYI are fast enough, they can compensate with quick puck movement. A coach can also impact 'looking relieved.' It's an easy narrative, naturally, but there's so much girt, passion, and character in this team that I (suspect) they aren't content; twice, a game away from the Stanley Cup. The exhausting part I agree with, especially given Trotz' expectations of commitment.

Yes, tweaks are needed. Objectively, I see what I can get out of this core. I think they are good enough to compete next year and another two years. Horvat is a game changer, not that he's super elite. It's his age, he's peaking at the right time and he meshes with the current emerging core.

I'm not sure about Lou, b/c he's 'all in,' I am sure about Lambert. He's not terrible, but with the makeup of this team they need an upper echelon coach.

Not sure how much or little Rosner is plugged in to team and league pipeline but his direct quote to the suggestion of Barry coming in for Lane at this point is "not happening"

My quote on that is "that's too bad"

My guess is that you're finding the differences between two teams and then correlating that with the level of success the teams are having. I don't think they're related.

facilitate the oilers by taking on JESSE PULJUJÄRVI and just let him walk in the summer by not qualifying him . Maybe you can get their 2nd or 3rd round pick for your troubles .

Lou's got a backup. We have enough cap space to make a difference for another team. I think we will use our cap space to grab another first in this draft by taking a bad contract ending this season so that another team can make a big run for someone like Karlsson or Meier or something.

I think all the discussion about Romanov/Aho/Barzal/the powerplay/etc isn’t really as important as Pelech and Pulock. I don't see this team being competitive without Pelech-Pulock playing at the level they can, and if Lambert isn't capable of getting what Trotz got out of them we have issues.

You can fire Lambert, but firing someone like Trotz may be difficult. And where does that put Lamoriello? We have little cap space. Fixing the defense via UFA probably won't happen. So does he move another 1st + to fix the defense? Moving draft picks like this can't be a successful long-term strategy.

I don’t think they’ll trade a first for Varlamov. I’ll be thrilled if they do but not expecting it. We’ll see!
I actually think a late 1st round pick can be had for both Varly and Mayfield. Both are battle tested in the playoffs. Mayfield type players are typically valued higher for playoff runs. Varly is an upgrade over a decent amount of starters. We shall see. The Isles need to be about 10 games over 500 for the rest of the season to sneak into the playoffs (18-8-0 or 17-7-2, etc). I don't see it happening. They better get some assets for the expiring guys.
