Trading for a guy who's paid $5.8 million for next season as well is madness. Isles do not have the space and why on earth should they give up something for a player like that when they will need to pay to get tid of Bailey.

Only if Bailey goes the other way in straight swap should that be considered.
What? Henrique has 19 goals which is one behind our all star and tied with our captain. More than double Patrick Kane on a team just as bad. He PKs and can fill in at center if someone goes down. Wins faceoffs. He’s a -3 on a line with Zegras who is a -23. He’s signed for one more year which realistically is what we want, and Anaheim might even be willing to retain a portion.

But sure dude, pretty much an even swap with Bailey

I would wait on adding. See where the team is at respective to their competitors come March 3rd. Don't waste an asset now on a rental, only to miss the playoffs. Bolduc, Aho, Wother can hold the fort. For me, I invest energy in a coaching change. I know it's late in the season, and adjustments will have to be made. That said, this team will get more from a better coach than a 3rd pairing D man that is playing under a mediocre coach. Claude Julien was mentioned. He's a D-first coach, I would target him, Q, or use some pixie dust on Trotz.

Are there any other candidates?

Would like to see Bailey traded to Detroit for Perron. Him with Horvat and Barzal would be lethal. Throw in a 2nd pick to make up for the talent difference. Not to mention how good Perron is on the powerplay. Perron, likely Bailey only has 1 year left on his deal after this season. If Meier isn’t happening I believe this is the next best thing. Perron is 34 but is still playing very good hockey. He helps this year and next year.

I'd like to see Bailey anywhere for anything, or nothing for that matter

Perron is sorely missed in St.Lou. Detroit might be wise to hold on to him. He's a savvy vet and they'll be playoff contenders next season. They can trade him next deadline if they aren't in the thick of things. Besides why would they want Bailey

Why would Detroit do this? Perron makes less and is more productive. Even with the 2nd I don’t think it’s worth it for them. Bailey is literally a net negative on the ice at this point.

At the risk of getting repetitious, if the Isles deal for Chychrun I wonder about possibly adding Bailey and Schmaltz to the deal. I can't imagine AZ doesn't want to deal him before his NTC kicks in this summer considering he's due to be paid over $8M per year for the next 3 years. Bailey has a $5M cap hit but is only owed $3.5M actual money for 2 seasons. AZ would save $17.5M in actual dollars with that swap. Since they play in the Commack Arena, I would think that $$ savings would appeal to them....
I’ve considered this deal too on-and-off since last season. The concern with Schmaltz (and Chychrun for that matter) is that they are injury prone and miss time every season.

Anecdotally speaking, it seems we always have AZ players in the rumor mill, and available for trade. After they finally move, their play seems to drop off when faced with more competitive minutes.

Anyway, if Schmaltz continues to get hurt and or has another drop in play, I fear the Isles just get another Bailey for two more years at an even harder contract to buyout.

But the principle reasoning for such a trade remains sound. Which is why I wonder if there a possibility of a similar trade for another player with less risk?

Another kind of trade, would be to move Bailey for a similar contracted D-man. Tyler Myers comes to mind. Then flip Mayfield for a pick. Could Myers play well enough in third pairing minutes with PK time? You essentially flip Bailey’s cap hit to mitigate the loss of Mayfield… somewhat. But gain a pick to use elsewhere.

Sure, a mid 30s $6 million player is just what the doctor ordered for this team. You know, we really lack those in our team....

Yes Baileys contract is more but it is a measly 250k. Would hope the 2nd rd pick is enough to make up for the difference and then some. Plus Bailey only has 10 less points than Perron. It isn’t that big of a difference in terms of production, just enough to make a difference for us

Ottawa is still trying to move Zaitsev, and will have to pay to do so.

I’m wondering if Lamoriello is willing to trade Mayfield and/or Varlamov if they won’t sign extension’s by the deadline.

I’m thinking they could get at least a 2nd round pick for taking on Zaitsev, a 1st round pick for Mayfield, and a 2nd round pick + B prospect for Varlamov.

That would be a nice recoup of asset from the Horvat deal that Lamoriello can hang onto or deal if he so chooses. Chychrun, Crouse, and Vejmelka would be my targets…

1st from Mayfield trade, two 2nds (from Varlamov & Zaitsev deals), Wahlstrom, Bailey, Bolduc, Iskhakov, NYI’s own 2023 3rd, and Salo or Aho

If Puljujärvi is waived as speculated I really hope we put in a claim, especially with Wahlstrom done for the year, you just don't qualify him if he doesn't bring anything and you don't have to give up any assets if you get him.

As I understand it, if you pick someone off of waivers, you've gotta place someone on waivers as well.

Is that no longer the case?

If it is, who is that guy gonna be?

That said, there may not be a better player to pick up off of waivers than Pool Party.

That’s only the case if you are at 50 contracts or 23 people on the roster, which we are at for roster size. Easy answer is someone not requiring waivers but the smart answer would be Ross Johnston who doesn’t play anyways.

These are the kinds of moves I hoped Lou would make more of. JP is at worst an excellent defensive forward with size. He really seems down on his game based on his comments and is having serious confidence issues. If he gives you something, he would be an upgrade over Martin on the 4th line.

The excitement of Bo will eventually wear off especially if you have more games like the ones against the Canucks. The Isles need a minimum of 95 pts (maybe more) to sneak into the playoffs. This means they have to play at 109-110 pt pace for the rest of the season (winning 2 out of every 3 games). It's possible, but still a long shot. They need to be trying out cheap talent rest of the year. Unless they go on a tear in the next 3 weeks, I'd definitely trade Mayfield/Varlamov. As much as I think they've gotten better, the Vancouver game pretty much shows you that there is no way in hell they beat Boston or Carolina even if you manage to sneak in.

Our closest comparable mid thirties 6 million dollar player is Brock Nelson. A blight upon our roster.

Despite popular belief, salary and age actually tell you absolutely nothing about how a player is performing. In the deal I proposed upgrading Bailey at the cost of two players who likely won’t be cracking the starting lineup next year.

And if for some reason it doesn’t work and we aren’t headed towards the playoffs next year, we flip his expiring contract at the deadline.

This would be the biggest trade I have ever seen lmao

Ok... my latest Bailey off of the Isles trade. Take warning @doublechili I'm taking shots across the bow of your Bailey trade proposals! :sarcasm:

Isles move Bailey's 1yr (3.5M and 5Cap) to Arizona for Patrick Nemeth's 1yr (3.5M and 2.5Cap). Isles include Bodie Wilde and Arizona picks one of Sebastian Aho or Robin Salo. Arizona returns the Isles 3rd round pick. This deal can be done in the offseason, or by the deadline if AZ chooses Salo over Aho.

AZ - Bailey, Wilde, (Salo or Aho)
NYI - Nemeth, 3rd (I do this trade even without the third returning)

Arizona gains 1.5M cap floor space for the same salary they have to pay Nemeth. Nemeth currently is on par with Aho as a player. Isles can bury Nemeth in the minors and essentially reduce Bailey's final contract year from a 5M cap hit to ~1.4M (1.2 if bought out). Arizona is set to lose 9M of cap floor space after Ladd and Gotisbehere become UFA. That will be more if Chychrun is finally moved.

I don't get why everyone wants to deal Top Line Bailey. Is it because he hasn't scored a goal in 19 games? 😬

I like the idea of getting a 2nd to take on Zaitsev. He can be our LD 3rd pair. But I'm not sure about that Arizona deal.
