I tend to agree with you. I think Lou might be trying to retool on the fly. I’m thinking he is targeting players in the 25-28 range that can be with the team for a few years.
I also agree.
Even though I feel the way to have gone was retool and see what you could have gotten for Varlamov, Mayfield and Beau...it does seem Lou is gearing for "all in" and to at least try and get players who are under 30 that can make this run with Sorokin, Barzal, Dobson, etc.
I don't think he wants to break up the now 4 capable face-off guys (Horvat, Nelson, Pageau and Cizikas) by moving any of them to wing (although Bo may play there) and he is looking for another wing (at the right price) and instead is looking for the bigger fish to come on the blue line. He knows he has 5 but is not feeling too good about #6 so that is what he is looking for. I still think it is a Chychrun type he is aiming for.
He still needs to add a wing to put in the top 2 lines so he doesn't have to put Bailey or Parise there, but I dont think it is going to be a big fish, although who knows.
I don't agree this is a "retool" though and unless we really stink up the place in the next 10 games or so, he isn't trading either of Scott or Semyon; which is unfortunate....
I like adding Horvat and I have a feeling I am going to like the players we still add, but it is difficult to get excited about a possible Stanley Cup run when we are so far back and need so many things to go right just to get us into that conversation....
I think the Athletic's latest article titled "Lou's last run" is about the best way to describe what is going on here. He doubled down on this group in the offseason and just added a star player without an extension in place (risky as hell) and seems geared up to do more...
It is what it is and am just hoping for the best at this point...
I see a lot of people mentioning tank or meier. How the heck are they resigning these guys unless they are rentals. If isles want to sign Bo, Mayfield, Wally and possibly varly on like a 2 mil contract they'll be right against the cap. Even if you get rid of baileys contract that's still not enough for those guys.
I think that is just hangover on Lou finally getting a big name and going "all in".
I see a lesser wing personally and the focus on getting a puck mover in the back end being the bigger priority...
