Ultimately it’s money thing I think, mayfield has value and is me of the better defender on the penalty kill in league but I just can’t see way we keep him long term at 4+ a year.

I really think Mayfield is dealt, even it’s for a pick that Lou uses in some other deal. In cap situation they are in how can we afford him at 4+ a year?
I understand where you're coming from totally....cool that you and I can chat rationally about such things....hoping Lou is doing the same with whoever his confidant is....himself??

Also think partially this is only way to really retool this roster, he needs more picks and using guys like Mayfield and possibly Varly to get them is only way for them to be in market for prime available players.

This team will only go as far as Lambert can take them; that’s not very. Just to echo some of the sentiments re: Lambert. I’m not overly confident in him leading this group. They went from a HOF coach that extracted everything from this group to an avg. coach. The lack of defensive-mindedness, attention to defensive details, and overall structure is sorely needed.

I wish they’d bring back Trotz (pipe dream) or hire someone with a winning pedigree, e.g. coach Q, as in now.

I see us trading Mayfield either way at deadline, he is good but isles can’t pay him 4+ a year in cap environment. I guess it possible we could get late first for him in some situation. Varly could be back but it won’t be at 5 a year, maybe half of that is more likely but If Kings are serious and want him and offer their first say I could us trading him also now. It’s possible Lou trades for other teams firsts and uses them to get someone like Meier. They could even keep the firsts and if they miss playoffs pick three times in 1st round and blow everyone mind who says Lou trades all our picks LOL. Isles could buy out Bailey savings around 2.5 on cap as well next year. If Horvat stays which I think he does in off-season isles could look at trading a center.

I'll bet you as much money as you want that the Isles don't trade Mayfield before the deadline...And I'll go double or nothing right off the bat that Lou resigns him (and I'll triple down that he gets overpaid in the process and for too long).

I say all this because it's simply in one of the first few chapters of the Lou playbook...

  1. Only trade FOR players at the deadline.
  2. Never trade a roster player unless the cap, expansion draft, or 50 contract limit forces you to.
  3. Try to resign everyone.

Those 3 things are all he's done since he's been here (and before), so would be moronic to expect an 80 year old human being to all of a sudden make a left turn when he's only been making rights his whole life.

Can't trade the 2024 1st either, since it's a conditional pick it might belong to the Canucks.

Actually you can trade the 2024 1st, but it would have to be conditional.

The same way the Canucks are getting our 2023 1st rounder unless we make the playoffs...The Blues (or any other team) could get our 2024 1st, unless it goes to the Canucks. Then the condition would have to be they get the 2025 1st (or some other mutually agreed to asset).

Your point is well taken but this feels a bit different and he did move a roster core player in Horvat deal so to me sort of signals Lou recognizes the mix needs changing doesn’t it? I like Mayfield and all things equal he should stay but looking at their cap situation how can they afford him and still upgrade further up front. I’ll say this either Mayfield or Varly needs to be traded to get another high pick Lou can use for someone else, i don’t see how else isles can be in on anyone else like Meier.

Are we looking for a winger with more jam? An artist who everyone thinks is the only type of winger Barzal can work with? Or is salary cap going to dictate the type of player we go after?
We are looking for a winger with more jam that can mesh well with Barzal and fits within our salary cap structure. I would think this is the easiest question ever to answer.

Usually agree with your thoughts but I'm all in with JT on anti Q for moralistic reasons. Same reason I'm anti Kane.

Now Barry, I'm all for!

I can't imagine us landing another top guy. I mean, how often does a team land the more than one of the top 5 most wanted rentals at a trade deadline? The fact is once Horvat is off the table the other teams are going to be bidding on the rest making it nearly impossible for Isles to put out the best offer. That's just my two cents anyway. We are probably looking at the 2nd tier rentals. Barbashev talk intrigues me.

Until Horvat signs there is simply no way to know which direction Lou is planning although I strongly believes he is going all in. Win or bust. Cynically put, he is 80 years old and will most likely no live to see the end of the deals he will be signing this spring or offseason, and as such he does not care what the future holds.

With the Horvat trade he signals he thinks this team can win and will be looking to add more. He knows that he might not have his contract renewed if they fail again, and is going all in and push the problems ahead of him like he has done in the past.

If Horvat signs, that eats most of the cap room this team has. There will not be enough to sign Mayfield and Varly as well, at least not both. The only way that is possible is some wizardry in dealing the likes of Bailey and Palmieri, which will cost even further assets. In that case we are left with an aging team of vets on horrible contracts with no prospect pool at all.

Best case scenario (I'm assuming the have no chance of winning the Cup) is probably to have Horvat sign, then watch the team go on an almighty slide forcing Lou to sell off assets like Mayfield, Varly and whatever else he can get assets for and recoup what he gave up in the trade, and hopefully more. Then slide so far they win the lottery and get Bedard :D. Retool almost complete.

Quite the pessimist these days. Looking forward to rehashing this in a month. I'll start searching for some side dishes that go good with crow just in case.

No, it is more likely than not that trading for Horvat was an "all in" move and Lou continues that trend (hence all the cap space)....meaning obviously looking for another winger AND puck moving defender who would be our 6th guy (Pelech, Pulock, Dobson, Romanov AND MAYFIELD).

He isn't subtracting key players in an "all-in" quest. Subtracting the backup goalie when we have no one else to support Sorokin or subtracting one of our more consistent defenders when we are already short one- I just don't see Lou doing that.

Not that I don't agree with you that it is arguably "what we should do" it just isn't what Lou will entertain....

As for being in on another top fish forward like Meier, people need to accept we finally got one and stop assuming we are getting another with the limited assets we do have....it isnt happening. Certainly not on the level of Meier for sure...

I want the Isles to get Jakub Vrana. Probably not very expensive as he could have been had for free last month. Low risk, high reward when we're struggling with scoring goals.

I don't know. I met Lou a couple of times since he got to the Island. He's in better shape at 80 than some of you guys at 30 are.

Unavailable is a better word

The AHL All Star Game is on February 6. Bolduc will be in Philadelphia playing for the New York Islanders that night.

I'm guessing that Dobson still isn't ready to go.

He has 6g and 8 pts in his last 7gp in the AHL which does show promise for him being back on track, but with another year on his contract at 5.25mil, I can't say that I view him as low risk.

Considering the Isles lack of assets but additional cap space. If the Isles are in, or close to a playoff position at the deadline; Frank Vatrano and/or Dimtry Kulikov from Anaheim seem like the kind of trade that can reasonably happen.

With Vatrano still having two more years, maybe the Isles can send the lower salary higher cap hit of Josh Bailey going the other way. Would Salo/Wilde or both along with a lower pick be enough?
