I think it's the opposite.

It's a overpay and they have some guys they need to sign both now and in the next few seasons. Seems like, to me at least, that they're willing to put their dollars to use elsewhere.

It's a "he helps us now" move but its also a "we suck at everything but scoring and goalie" and "we don't like our room and want to rebuild it" and are willing to overpay more so than anything.

Yea well reasoned. Definitely agree that he addresses the needs of this group really well...checks a lot of boxes. He was a good target IMO.

Yeah I gotta bad feeling about this now. Either he's gonna be a fan favorite down the road and develop into a much more productive player under Gallant or we just wasted $4M on a career 20 point 3rd liner. Signing him for 6 years means Drury expects him to be a large part of our core group moving forward. Obviously also means Drury will move Buch/Strome 100% no questions now.

Still smell a massive deal on the horizon, and there's the calm before the storm with one particular player as of late......

Everyone has the right to have sticker shock. What I don't get was the collective celebration two days ago. Why did anyone think this was going to be anything under market value plus the Stanley Cup tax? He's been paid relatively little during a physical career, played a huge role on a winning team for less than he deserved, a few weeks away from UFA, and the team laid all of its cards on the table with respect to Wilson, paying an asset for exclusive negotiation rights, wanting a culture change... This was fairly predictable.

That better be the case. Because if this number is true we have 10 million tied up to two 3rd line wingers, and another 8 million to a 2nd pair defensman. You start multiplying these "it's a slight overpay" contracts and suddenly you are screwed when you are up to the cap and a guy like Laf wants that 8x9 million after two great seasons. And then you can only bridge him because your cap is tied to these complementary players.

I don't get bent out of shape with the cap concerns 3-4 years down the road. What he brings to the team is sorely needed. Period. I was already prepared for a 4 mil AAV 5/6 year type of deal. People would be ok with 3 mil but are upset with 3.6. This just makes me laugh, like that is going to be a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure Drury has thought about options B and C if things don't work out. There is always an out. The Isles just freed up 13 million by trading Leddy and useless Ladd. I'm not concerned in the very least that they will be able to buyout or trade the player towards the end of the deal if needed.

Oilers out there getting RNH for 8 x 5 while we sign a 4th liner for 6 x 3.6

Hopefully if this group takes the next step as a team and w/ the obvious key individuals the NYR will be able to get a few discounts themselves in the coming years. Make sense that they're not there yet.

Zibanejad + Buchnevich and 15th overall to Red Wings for Larkin and 6th overall???

Larkin is never happening. Maybe there was smoke brewing between NYR-DET 2 or 3 years ago, but Detroit is in a much different position now AND on top of that they named Larkin their Captain not too long ago. He's not going anywhere.

It seems like it'll be Eichel. It's been like that for over a year now. NYR has always been infatuated with Jack
