I think, at least from my perspective, shitting on the Kravtsov pick is a bit of revisionist history. While many were initially upset given Wahlstrom and others on the board, many were okay or happy with the pick given the lack of top end talent in our system at the time (no Kakko or Laf at this time and Lias was not a high end skill/talent) after settling down. Personally, I can't fault the team for going after top end skill even knowing the possible bust potential. What bothers me about Kravtsov is the management after the pick and how everything went down (which falls both on the org and the player with all the missteps by both parties well documented.)

The picks that should be criticized nonstop are the Lias and Lindbom picks because both are indicative of flat out poor drafting that anyone could see. They used their 7th overall pick on a guy who topped out as a middle 6 two-way forward and drafted him for intangible nonsense and then used a high 2nd round pick on a f***ing goaltender (a position the New York Rangers of all teams does not need to draft that high) and a bad one at that.

So I’m watching Vegas and remembering how many here (including myself) had no interest in trading for Jack Eichel. All kind of reasons.

I guess that’s why we are sitting on the couch and not running a team.

Do you also remember all the people who did want to trade for him?

Bobrov yes, Clark not so much. When did he ever draft high end skill forwards esp from Russia and in the first round. He always drafted US, Canadian players with character. It all changed once Bobrov/Gorton were in charge. Clarke first round picks w/Slats McIlrath, Krider, Miller, Skjei. Gorton took over 7/1/15 he went on to draft Andersson, Chytil, Krav, K. Miller, Lundkvist. I def think Bobrov was pretty much the head of scouting without the title at that point, also why he went to MTL w/Gorts. Schneider is the exception here but I think that was more JD/Clarke based on the reaction to getting him at the draft.
I remember Clarke fist pumping for Lias... Bobrov played a major part in it but Clark went along for the ride

This will be the lasting memory of the Eichel thing for me. That sabotaged any chance of the move. It should have happened but Buffalo refused to deal with the Rangers afterwards. Laughing them off the planet would give them too much attention

Ironically the issue with the Eichel saga was the idiots sitting on the couch
4D chess move. You just know that Tom Wilson would've ended his career in Game 20 of the season if the Rangers dealt a ransom for him. Things would have never happened the way they have if Eichel became a Ranger.

Lots of heavy playoff type UFA..Perry,Barbeshev,Jordan Staal,Beruzzi,Fast etc...we need cap space..Artemi is the key to rebuild for playoffs..Since lots of teams up against cap it should depress free agent money..Drury has his work cut out for him
If the Rangers deal Panarin for future considerations and sign Barbashev and do nothing else but sign their RFA's, I'd consider the offsason a success.

Just trade for Tom Wilson so everyone can shut the F up about it - 5D chess

The interesting part about Lias in retrospect is everyone got it wrong. Like every scouting report out there said this guy’s floor was bottom 6 everyday NHL player

But to your point, Rangers had/have a “we’re smarter than everyone else” complex

I almost wonder how successful a team would be just picking based off McKenzie’s list. Sometimes the simple choice is the right one

My favorite was the dumbass "Church of Kakko" crap before the kid had ever played a game. Im sure the 18 year old getting acclimated to a new country loved the pressure of having a "church" named after him with a dud in his 30s dressed like a priest. Cringy as hell.

That was ridiculous. Rangers fans put a lot of pressure on the kid. I think once Laf got drafted, all eyes went to Laf, and think that is why Kakko has looked much better since after his 1st season. As per the points, can fault the usage somewhat. If he was getting steady PP time and stapled to the Top 6, think he could easily be between 50-60 points. We traded for old man Kane, which pushed Kakko further aside.

bold 1: I wanted Dobson, but was willing to presume nyr braintrust might know better than me.
Well, everyone looking to find an instance where bern is wrong, this is it!!!

bold 2: Agree generally, but remember Lind was at insistent behest of our G guru coach Allaire. While this guy is not another Wolf or other high end netminder, his getting on board was delayed, which late signing did not help. In any event, he is starting to show SOMETHING lately even tho a ways to go. He will not supplant Garand. If we can up his value and flip to recover some value, fine.

Lias I was never in favor of, a bum day 1 and all the way thru

The problem with Kravtsov being considered a "top end" talent is that despite looking like one (he's big, can skate, has good skills) he had never produced like one, at any level, outside of that one playoff right before the draft. And he hasn't since.

There is always context needed when it comes to production (league, role, TOI, line mates, etc.) but usually lack of top end production is a huge red flag. The Rangers were hoping that something clicked for Kravstov and the playoff production would continue but that was probably a bad bet from the start.

Lias selection defied all logic, rationale, and intelligence.
Supposedly, this guy ONLY had a motor, and was a comparable to Habs' Gallagher -- did nothing well, but collectively, w/hustle, was sufficiently productive.

I saw this as huge red flag.
I recognized we missed all the [projected to be] good pieces at 7OA,
I wanted us, given that, to trade down.
But nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
had to have win now instant gratification

What they get for not listening to bern

bold: agree, and fault is both w/player and club for not developing properly.
Insisted on usually on line w/Panarin, and that was signif chemistry issue.

Let's remember I wanted to experiment with him at pivot w/correct complementary Ws.
But nooooooooooooooooooooooooo
braintrust was closeminded.
Again
And wrong
Again

If Trouba accepts a trade to Red Wings..we sign Gudas and move Brandon to 2RD.
If Bread agrees to move on use salary to sign Barbeshev and Fast and Jordan Staal.
Schenn looks affordable also. Hathaway,Nyquist Folignoand Engall all make sense.

These playoffs are slugfests and to think you can do battle with Bread and Kane avoiding hits is silly.

Play the regular season learning how to play 5 on 5...develop your PP with 24-72-13 getting major minutes and designate a bruiser either at wing or C in all your lines.

Kravtsov, to me, was McIlrath part 2. First in the sense that over a small sample size they managed to convince themselves they'd seen something all the other teams had missed. All we heard from Clark in 2010 was about what an amazing second half McIlrath had. How he'd seized opportunity when it was finally presented to him. The same thing happened with Kravtsov.

The other part of that was the pick felt reactionary. Like they'd been sitting on the negative response to them taking Andersson the year before and decided it was going to be skill above all else this year. Similar to how McIlrath felt like a response to the Carcillo/Gaborik incident.

The truly absurd part of the Eichel thing was that the Rangers were coming out of a rebuild, really needed lacked depth down the middle, and had put themselves in a position where adding a elite talent with term heading into his prime was nearly impossible to achieve financially.

That being said, pretty widely known at this point that there was a Rangers tax on the deal and it wasn't palatable even if we'd made the money work.

I'm not paying UFA prices for a single player on that list. Rangers improvement next year will come from within

The Eichel dream pretty much died before it was really ever a thing.

This is why you don't sign Panarin before you know what the f*** you have internally.

Plus there seems to be a blatant blind eye turned to the fact that he's continued to miss a shit load of time. Like he looks good now, but he can't help you if he doesn't play and thats been a thing with Vegas too.

Get the f*** out of here with the "we should have traded for Eichel" garbage. Last year people were thanking their lucky stars we dodged that. Even part way through this year when he was missing even more time people were happy to not be dealing with that LTIR mess. Now everybody is so sure we missed out and should have pulled the trigger?

You're a bust until the moment you are a superstar. Its just a team with a 90+ million dollar cap hit steamrolling the playoffs again. Where have I seen that before?

All true.

Wish the Rangers played the LTIR game with Lindgren instead of p***yfooting with their lineup. Shit was so f***ing dumb.

I realize that the Lindgren shit happened while they were in the middle of doing their lineup shenanigans, but the opportunity was there and it would have been really wise for them to take advantage of that while giving the player time to heal.

It would not surprise me if Ramsay and the medical staff misdiagnosed Lindgren and that led to his firing. It certainly was not a good look that they couldn't do any LTIR shenanigans AND he came back for a game, played 2 shifts, and left injured.

Eichel trade wasn't possible because the Sabres ownership didn't want to send him to NYR unless we paid extra.

Clark went on a much publicized scouting trip to see Kravtsov and as I remember it, Vitaly tore it up in the KHL playoffs. I don’t remember Drury being referenced as being there.
