all of these are overpays. Yeah, they're UFAs but there's literally no cap room. These numbers, for the most part, are too inflated IMO

HLe's a solid fourth liner, it's profoundly stupid to think they trade him to sign an asser one... premise3, no argument--they need guys who suck but work hard though... and it's all they'll get... they shit the bed, gotta lie in it...
Also, Drury is FURTHER under the microscope (please do not disagree, believe me) than ever... would he tyrade his first ever signing 1/3 in. Gorton might... well, Drury did with Nemeth... point is, he's made big mistakes so far, more than successes, so... why trade the guy we KNOW can bring all we need (sans speed, and granted he's not asked to support the offense--he can't, he has no skill. For that, you need Fast, Engvall, etc.)
Not so fast, Goodrow is the organization's sole junkyard dog-types, no ? Not saying I think Miller sho uld be traded...yet, at least--Lafreniere... progress is progress, but shut it with "Savard" when a 1st overall is going on D+4 wilthout 40pts yet... I say "St efan," these days.

P.S. I'm so happy that the Devils have Hamilton locked in at $9M and a NMC for a few more years. They'd be better with only Severson and Marino.

I'm on the Engvall train but I'm not giving him $4M
EvolvingHockey has him predicated at 3 years $2.9M. I'm all over that.
He's a perfect middle6 player ( drives offense/forechecks, can skate, PK and is strong defensively ) and has some untapped offensive potential imo.

Unfortunately, the feeling I get is he’d come to the Rangers and his head would fall off. The system or lack their of would’ve probably made him look nothing like what we’re seeing. Rangeritus, hockey is different here.

I Like Garland, I don't like the swap in the lineup, or the trade.
Garland is also 27, smaller than Laf and had about 100 hits less this year.
Can Garland return to his previous form? Maybe.
Can Laf improve to a point that would exceed Garland's return to form? Maybe.
There isn't much difference in this years stats, and Laf has way more potential to grow.
That's my take on it anyway.

Won't disagree with you on the Drury being under the microscope because besides his TDL deals he hasn't done anything all that great so far, big whiffs on Buch trade, FA signings. Though if that's the trajectory he's on I guess we can continue with him making the worse decisions for the organization. Keeping Goodrow over Laf & Miller is just a bad move imo. It's not about Goodrow being a good 4th liner or whatever but that's what he is and he's way overpaid for too long. Laffy will cost less and will put up more points even if it's just as a 3rd liner. When Drury traded/signed Goodrow it was because "he knows what it takes to win a cup" and was a non factor like the rest of the team. He didn't show any intangibles (what fighting Bahl??). You can get the Vesey's of the world who are just as good, if not better for almost 3 mil less and for less term. Obviously I'm in the don't trade laf and Miller camp but I'm not against it if it's the right move. If it's a move to make a move and "shake up the core' neither of those guys are the move to make. They're the easy and lazy move unless someone extremely overpays. I see that kind of move more like a Buch trade.
111% true, just adding the overriding issue imo was concern about risky health issues that could easily bite us in the ass after the fact. While LTIR was one fallback, surrendering many assets to Sabes, as is, upfront, no guarantee, was too risky.

Unfortunately Barclay Goodrow was the 3rd wheel of a 3rd line that had two guys that were 2nd liners on it. That's the reality of that situation, as well as this one. His numbers in Tampa away from those guys are about on par with his numbers here when he is put into a 3rd/4th line role.
He's a passenger for good players when there is a structure. It works when you make ~1M (Vesey), but when you make 3.6M, it's too much.
Find a sucker willing to take his deal or buy him out and get the cap surplus these two seasons. Don't give up any assets to get rid of it. Future considerations works for me.
Soon enough, the escrow will be paid back from COVID. The cap will naturally elevate. The biggest charge comes in 26-27 at 3.65. The question will become is it worth it to have the space right now or ~3.65% of the cap (I'd expect a 100M cap by then) being his buyout in 4 years? I'll take the cap space now.

If the team could shed some $$, I'd be very interested in Bertuzzi. I see him as someone who could fill that Bennett role here in NY.
It's a bit sad because guys like Zucker, Gudas and Barbeshev would be real good additions if Drury could find a way to make cap space.
The one guy who isn't mentioned that I think should be is Sheary. Don't see him on the list

Relative to what they bring to the team, Goodrow is more overpaid than Trouba, which is a real accomplishment.
And advocating for moving young, high upside pieces to keep a dime-a-dozen, 2.5 mil overpaid 4th liner is quite a bizarre take, to put it very nicely.

It's a bad contract but I'd rather keep Goodrow than buy him out or use a pick to deal him out. By my math we won't really need the cap savings this summer to sign Miller & Laf, a backup goalie and maybe bring back Motte on the cheap. I'm fine with the only adds to the roster being ELC guys like Jones & Cuylle. Brodz/Leschysyn suck but they are both under contract for the minimum and can be 12/13 forwards. The roster we have is a 100 point team with SMART (key word) deadline adds. It will be on the new coaching staff to improve the 5v5 play because given the talent on the roster it should be better.

Whatever team overpays Bertuzzi and Barbashev is going to regret it. Those are the types of July 1st signings that get GMs fired.

I normal years I could see this but I don't think players' salaries will be that bad right now. Look at Trochek last off-season as an example. That's an extremely reasonable UFA deal for a top-6 center. With Bertuzzi's injury history I could se him getting high $4's with slightly less term. Say 5 years @ $4.85m.
Barbashev is similar. He had one outlier year but he's a middle-6 C/RW who plays a physical game. I could see slightly less than Bertuzzi. Maybe 5-6 years @ $4.2m.
For what they provide, in terms of UFA contracts, those are not at all bad deals.

In a vaccum Bertuzzi is worth high 4 AAV because he's young and plays a game that translates to the playoffs, but Barbashev getting the Goodrow contract with a higher AAV would be a mistake for anyone. As @duhmetreE said, with the lack of cap space teams wont people able to shell out this kind of money unless they are all signing with bottom feeders trying to reach the cap floor. Which i guess is a possibility.

I'm not sure I would sign Barbashev, but I think he is a step up from Goodrow in terms of production.
If the cap space was there, I would pursue Bertuzzi, Brown and Garland (assuming $$ retained or a buyout)
