I've been one of the bigger proponents of Gorts doing everything he can to move Shatty for a long time. I just don't want us risk getting stuck with more contracts on D. Its as simple as that. I got goose bumps when Shatty signed here, his love for the franchise was real. But it is what it is, and every contract still on the books the coming years will hurt us a lot. Besides, I think both Pionk and TDA are showing some promise back there. I also don't think that its impossible at all that we -- if we have openings on D -- during the coming years can dig up someone that can take a spot they are given and run with it.

BUT, there is one benefit with keeping Shatty that also should be mentioned for the sake of completeness. Both TDAs and Pionk's contracts are up after this season. If those two share all PP time all year, their next contracts would certainly reflect it.

Shocking...Kreider likely not going anywhere.

Which means Gorton intends on having a competitive team next year. Because why else make a statement like that regarding Kreider?

I can see them signing Panarin and EK if he makes it there. Probably why they didnt want to invest long term with Zucc and Hayes.

No it doesn't.

It means that he values the player pretty highly and won't move him now unless someone gets desperate. He could still very well be dealt at the draft or at this time next year.

Minnesota is like looking into the Rangers future.

They signed praise and Suter to try and accelerate their rebuild.

Almost 7 years later, they’re basxially where we are with what, a single playoff round win to their name? Or is it 2?

Either way, those who are getting ready to bust out the balloons if gorton signs the UFAs or goes ham during the summer should look at them as the ultimate cautionary tale.

I have a video for that, too!

I really like the idea of Shattenkirk to Vegas. Not sure if it would work but he would fit in well with their core group of players like Stastny, Pacioretty, JAM, Smith, Karlsson. I think they must realize by now that Karlsson is not going to be an option for them in the off-season.

What does this even mean? This team clearly had no intention of being competitive this year, and Kreider is literally on the team.

Keeping Kreider doesn't signify anything. It just signifies they view him as relatively untouchable concerning his part in the rebuild.

I really don't understand how anyone who has been a Rangers fan for more than 5 minutes could honestly want them to sign Panarin or EK, let alone both.

The lack of patience that this organization has shown over the past few decades is literally the reason we have never won a cup in that time. And they have only been successful because they stepped in shit with the drafting of Lundqvist (while also getting Jagr in a once in a lifetime deal).

Then I am misinformed.

I would still take him. We need warm bodies

When he plays with energy he is a very effective 4th liner with size and strength that causes other teams to turn over pucks. The issue is he often floats through games. I'd still take him as a warm body (although I'm not sure if the team sees other players who they could snag who fit that mold better). I am still intrigued by taking Kassian off of Edmonton's hands.

Got it. Here we go again. You know best.

Spare me please. You want them to tank as part of the rebuild. I want them to add to the pieces they have been drafting, not trade draft picks, not add at the deadline next year. Keep their picks. But add talent to the youth we have. I believe in being competitive with the youth you have rather than feeding them to the wolves so you can have a CHANCE at the lottery pick and HOPE that kid becomes an elite talent for all the tanking that was done.

Why hold onto Kreider, the return will only be less as time goes on with less playoff runs the acquiring team could have with him. They are holding onto him because they think he is important to this organization and team moving forward and i dont see them throwing in the towel on next season.

But hey im less of a Rangers fan than you are...

Kassian over DSP is a negligible difference IMO. Id rather take the free one

Teams may not be willing to pay the price set right now.

In fact they straight up aren’t at the moment. As you said that will change in the coming months.

Maybe they extend him, but keeping him says nothing about their future plans. He isn’t a pending UFA so they have some leverage.

Why do you get so hostile lol.

I actually complimented your optimism yesterday. And for the record, I enjoy people who give me different perspectives. I prefer not to live in an echo chamber. You're the one who continuously attacks people who want to tank as if they're not real fans.

Instead of responding I'll just let you get the last point/word with the points you made here. Seems you can't have a decent discussion that doesn't align with your vision of signing every top FA, like we've been doing for the past 20 years.

All you have to do is look at the team in town tonight to see how things go if your feature players are ufa’s with out the requisite talent for them to compliment.

Rutherford suggested that the impending deadline might be even more of a seller’s market than usual because so few clubs are hopelessly out of contention for anything except a prominent place in the draft lottery.

“I would suspect that this trade deadline may be a little different because there are so many teams still in the (playoff) race in both conferences,” he said. “There were teams that were rumored to be sellers, and now they’re buyers.

“When the dust settles, how is that market going to shake down? Are there really enough players out there for all the buyers? My guess is no, there are not. That’s why I like to jump in early, so we’re not in a scramble at the very end. Could we make a deal on deadline day? Sure, if something comes along.”

This helps the Rangers.

Gorton is a seller.

Pierre LeBrun was on Leafs Lunch yesterday and he said a GM texted him asking about the latest on Mark Stone because this GM has players to move and everyone is in a holding pattern waiting for Stone. This GM is getting frustrated. Sounds like Gorton. Or maybe Kenny Holland. The Rangers & Red Wings have the most assets to sell.

I think DSP is an upgrade over Brickley, could be a good warm body for after the purge, though i was looking forward to Meskanen getting a shot

Something tells me the GM of the NYR isnt texting Lebrun to whine about a holdup in the markets. Maybe im wrong but that better not be how we do business.

I understand that I may be at the extreme end of the tank spectrum, but that's simply because the Rangers have gone the FA route literally my entire life and it hasn't worked.

I would be all for signing a 23-25 year old stud to build around, but have no interest in a 28 year old forward and a 29 year old, injury plagued D-man. I've seen that movie too many times around here.

Drury
Gomez
Richards
Redden
Shattenkirk

Even our own FA's like Staal and Girardi.

I just have absolutely no interest in this team turning a corner in 2-3 years and being saddled with enormous contracts to declining players.

Also, maybe this will please @RGY, but I would 100% be for an offer sheet to someone like Marner, or attempting to acquire a guy like Laine (probably a pipe dream - but we've discussed it here quite a bit). I was also very enthused about us trying to bring in Nylander earlier this year, prior to the extension.

I am not against bringing in talent today or tomorrow. But I want young talent, that can be a part of the rebuild. Not old players, who might very well keep this team in mediocrity and then, when our young guys turn a corner, become anchors on our ability to sign (or re-sign) the actual pieces necessary to win a cup.

Larry Brooks is updated by Rangers: https://nypost.com/2019/02/21/thanks-for-your-service-its-time-to-sit-hayes-and-zuccarello/

The contract talks, not surprisingly, have gone nowhere. Hence, Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes will be going somewhere by Monday. Until they do, they have played their last games. Or at least, that’s the call management should make prior to Thursday’s match at the Garden against the free-falling Wild.

It wasn’t necessarily the money, but rather the contract length asks that turned the negotiations with the players’ agents into non-starters, The Post has learned. Not only are extensions effectively off the table, the prospect of July 1 free-agent reunions are most unrealistic. When Zuccarello and Hayes go, you should expect them to stay gone.

So Hayes and Mats gone at TDL it will open up two spots either Howden or Lias will be called up or maybe both.
