Taking on Zaitsev and buying him out after next year? 8 years of cap hits but nothing astronomical (cap hit per year of the buyout is in bold, assuming we buy him out Summer 2020)

What exactly happened to Nylander? Is it that he's not playing with Mathews anymore? Haven't watched many Leafs games

Him for Kreider would actually be a decent trade I think... Leafs get a guy in his prime with plenty of playoff experience and we get a younger, (presumably) higher upside player that should hit his prime around the time we're competing again

The coach is trying to make an example out of him for missing so much of the year....I dont like Babcock, he always seems like he is trying to prove a point like when he refused to move Hyman off the 1st line, or just the fact that Matthew's ice time isnt that of an elite center. Theres absolutely no reason Nylander isnt on the top 2 lines.

No thanks we need to avoid those types of deals until Staal and Shattenkirk are off the books. Also,I really have no interest in helping Toronto get out of their mistakes considering they will be a problem for us for a long time if they are able to dump some contracts.

I know the Rangers are apparently saving their cap space for ”something unconventional”. Boston likes Hayes size. We Will see.

Offer-sheeting two RFAs where a team is under a tight cap crunch, assuming each RFA would sign for under $6,088,980. We would have to forfeit two first and third rounders collectively. The hit isn't as bad as four 1st rounders for one asset who makes over $10,148,302. We get younger players around 22 years old who are trending up that are getting 25-30 goals (Kyle Connor, 2015 17th OA) and another exciting and promising player (Kasperi Kapanen, 2014 22nd OA). This seems rather unconventional and does expedite the rebuild. I still think we need that player who can net us 30 goals like Laine, but there is no chance we could get him, even if we did offer sheet Winnipeg -- plus it's just not worth it for one player in my eyes.

Speaking of Vegas, I wonder if Gusev is a guy the Rangers might like to take a run at? Not the youngest but very talented and his KHL contract expires this year. Long has been talked about as possibly coming to North America. VGK could certainly make his rights available.
While there have been concerns whether Gusev would want to sign with VGK when his SKA deal is up, these seem to have been alleviated recently. Considering that Gusev is likely the best player outside the NHL and that he'd have to sign an ELC (not sure if it's a 1-year or 2-year), he will likely not be available for anything less than what a superstar with term would cost.

The contract talks, not surprisingly, have gone nowhere. Hence, Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes will be going somewhere by Monday. Until they do, they have played their last games. Or at least, that’s the call management should make prior to Thursday’s match at the Garden against the free-falling Wild.

It wasn’t necessarily the money, but rather the contract length asks that turned the negotiations with the players’ agents into non-starters, The Post has learned. Not only are extensions effectively off the table, the prospect of July 1 free-agent reunions are most unrealistic. When Zuccarello and Hayes go, you should expect them to stay gone.

Zuccarello, who agreed under some duress to a club-friendly four-year extension at the 2015 deadline, is believed to be seeking five years this time around. The 31-year-old probably will be able to get it on the open market on July 1, but that type of commitment is not viable for the Rangers. Hayes, who will turn 27 during the playoffs, is believed to be seeking six or seven years. That’s too much for the Blueshirts, who could have signed the center to a five-year deal over the summer but passed.

You can't blame the players for trying to get as much term as possible. You can't blame the Rangers for not wanting to give them term. Time to move on.

Zuccarello wants 5 years. Hayes wants 6 or 7 years. No thank you.

The Blueshirts have also received inquiries on Chris Kreider, with the Maple Leafs, Bruins and Predators believed to be three interested parties, but we’re told the winger is only available if general manager Jeff Gorton receives an offer he cannot refuse for No. 20. Thus far, no severed horses’ heads have appeared between the sheets.

Unless the Rangers are simply overwhelmed by an offer including a William Nylander or Charlie McAvoy, trading Kreider in addition to Hayes and Zuccarello would strip the team of three of its four best players (non-goalie division) with only Mika Zibanejad left behind to carry the torch.

How about Kapanen, DeBrusk and Fiala being the main piece with another top asset or two coming back for Kreider? We will be talking about the Rangers trading Kreider as a rental next February 21 if he is still here. You know we will. Kreider will want 6-7 years for $7M per in the summer and Gorton will say no. It will linger all season and come to a conclusion at the 2020 trading deadline.

I am leaning towards re-signing of Hayes to keep the core. He is still young and does not have injury issues. Zucc I am ok about trading, if we want him we can always try to re-sign him when he hits UFA market.

I would try to trade away some of the supporting cast like Namestnikov, Vesey, possibly Strome.

On defense pretty much everybody is available, but trading a UFA like McQuaid is a must. Return would be probably a 3rd rounder and a solid 19/20 yearold prospect. Pionk for Puljujarvi would make a lot of sense.

Lettieri probably needs to be either packaged or traded in a change of scenery type deal.

Claesson if we can get 3rd or 4th rounder for him then trade him, if not re-sign him

Would like to re-sign Brickley and Nieves

Fogarty, Bigras and Gilmour should to be traded in a Peter Holland type trades.

If there is a good offer for Skjei we should take advantage of it.

Call up Meskanen and Hajek or Crawley.

Next season could be a good idea to have Nils Lundkvist play in Hartford, as well as Reunanen, Sjalin, and Keane.

Somehow I doubt Hayes would refuse if Rangers tell him the most they feel comfortable with is a 5 year deal. I think they should do that, so far doesn't look like these Howdens, Chytils and Anderssons are able to be even close as good as Hayes.

There is very little buzz about Anaheim. 4 pts out of the POs.

They, probably, cannot rebuild given that Getzlaf and Perry both have 2 years remaining after this season on their deals with NMCs. They have four really good Ds in their prime and a very talented goalie in Gibson.

They, yesterday I think, buried Pat Eaves in the minors. Seems like they will be up to something at least. Or was that caused by someone else returning? They are right up against the cap and of course have little flexibility. With Silfverberg and Gibson's extensions kicking in next season they will basically be right up against the cap again after they have filled out the roster.

They have done a great job accumulating young Ds and have some kids in the system, Max Jones, Lundstrom, Sprong and co.

Winnipeg is crashing and burning. Come on Gorts make them an offer they can;t refuse

Big and heavy team. Nashville wasn't that great last season. Winnipeg didn't look good against Vegas. Hard not to notice that when Washington walked over Vegas like they did.

How good is Winnipeg really? Its the old two side of the coin thing. When a big and heavy team like that get a grip on you -- there isn't much you can do. But if you can keep your feet moving and get the puck out of trouble they will look real bad instead. Laine is looking sooo slow and heavy for them at times.

Not even sure I’d take Zaitsev If TO took both Staal and Smith just because of term

Praying Babcock asks for Smith at 50 off lol

Just for something different, some speculation from a Vegas beat writer:

@bobbop mentioned Vegas had talked to the Rangers at some point and noted Shattenkirk could be an upgrade for them. Stands to reason they'd ship out a RHD to accommodate him. Miller would be appealing to a number of teams as a chip. Add Shattenkirk, then move Miller as a piece in a deal for a Stone or something.

Probably nothing, but at least it's not the same old.

Colin Miller is to me like Steve Fogarty is to you. I was hoping we could figure out a way to nab him from the Bruins at the expansion draft, and I'd still gladly take him on this team. He's the type of player you play with Brady Skjei to solidify a pairing.

My AHL guy told me tonight that he has seen a Ranger scout(s) at Syracuse (Tampa) and Toronto (Toronto) in the last two weeks. May or may not mean anything.

I wonder if they're just looking for another RFA contract that'll expire next year. Gorton's made this type of moves a few times now to solidify a future piece for Hartford, i.e., the Holland for Cracknell deal.

So it looks like those sure thing contract negotiations went nowhere real fast, as reported by the same man you swore on back when he said that contract negotiations were happening. Pretty much everyone knew that they would go nowhere.

Webster, what will the next narrative/lie you hold onto for dear life be? Or do you not believe Larry now that he doesn't go with your narrative of Zucc staying?

Irish you know that you can't make this post and then complain on getting a response?

Brooks reported that we would discuss with Zucc and Hayes to get all cards on the table. Many thought those talks would amount to nothing, and they didn't. Not that big of a deal if someone for some reason did think they would though, or?
