Please please as hard as it is to root for a Boston team I hope they take them out in the first round...again
Its not hard at all for me...i cant stand Toronto and their fans. They are way worse than Boston. Such an entitled fan base that whines, complains, and has the most concocted imaginations in terms of value for their team, players, and the opposition

So they’re saving cap space for something unconventional, which probably means eating salary from a desperate team.

They’ll have 9 million in space, plus the added amount of whatever is going out via Hayes, Zucc, and McQuaid

What the hell do they need so much space for?

That seems to be why they aren’t holding these guys out yet (or at least we know). They’d be forced to call up guys from Hartford which eats into their deadline space...
I've tried to find where this was posted, can someone help me out?

Are there any really bad contracts that expire this year?

I’m pretty sure it was speculation after BBKers posted that the Rangers were looking at “doing something unconventional” but he didn’t specifically say they were taking on a bad contract(s)

Removed the pic to save folks some scrolling.

You're right they're in a bad spot, but I think the plan has always been to trade Nylander in the off season when teams have more cap flexibility, and the Leafs would get one "loaded up" run before they have to make a deep cut. If they can finally work out a deal with Nylander and Pesce after Nylander's bonus is paid out, it probably makes the cap work.

Trading Nylander makes it work for sure but that also does require them losing one of the better players on the team.

It does, but if they can address a position of need then it's not all bad. Plus Tavares/Marner and Matthews/Kapanen was doing just fine for them before Nylander returned.

The real question is, if the Canes wanted to move a D for Nylander, why didn't it get done earlier in the season? That's a weird dynamic they have going.

It's a tidbit from BBKers. He was relaying it as something that he heard. @BBKers could you clarify it again?

What? The speculation about something unconventional? I think it was a BBK post.

Maybe we're taking Chara back in a deal to finally fulfill Bern's dream of playing him as a 4th line forward.

The problem is I am not sure if trading Nylander for Pesce is even enough though. That clears 3M. I already had them dead up against the cap giving Marner less money than I thought, leaving out Kapanen/Johnsson, and filling in pretty much the whole bottom six and 3 defenders with random minor leagues. The only guy on the roster they can really get rid of is Brown but he only costs 2.1M or Muzzin but then their D will be a total disaster.

Dont know is this was posted yet but its GOLD:

That's actually a good point, the last dumb GM is gone.

And now we have a lot of GMs trying to outsmart each other, ending in very few trades ;)

'3 - way' trades? Eating % of cap hits then send them somewhere else?

eg. EDM trade Lucic with eating $1.5M to NYR. NYR trade Lucic with eating $1.5M to another team. Is that allowed under the CBA? ( THIS IS AN EXAMPLE; I know he has a NMC )

OTT trade's Stone to NYR. NYR trade Stone @ 50% to contending team; '3 way' deal.

A team that is cap strapped might value that for their prospects/picks. Teams like WAS, PIT, SJ, TB and CGY.

Well I think they want to badly clear Zaitsev off the books, but that's a really hard one to do. 5 years at $4.25M per year left isn't exactly a guy you offload with a pick and a prospect. Maybe if it was Sandin and a 1st in 2020, but even then it's still 5 freaking years.

Yea Zaitsev has two problems.

1. He's signed forever so who would take that?

2. If they retain in a trade it doesn't help that much because it's still 2.25M and again who wants it for 5 years?

2. If they were to buy him out he would cost 4M next year and then 1M for most of the remaining years...but the 4M next year barely saves them money and they need him now.

Yeah I have a hard time seeing them buying him out. 10 years of dead cap is rough, even if it's only $1M for 7 of the 10 years.

Unless a smaller market team sees him as a viable 2nd pairing guy who needs a change of scenery, I'm not sure how they could move him. I guess they could deal him to a team like the Rangers with some sweeteners, who then turn around and buy him out because they're less worried about the cap implications. Alternatively the Rangers could turn around and deal him for another problem like Lucic with a small amount of retention and acquire more sweeteners. Lucic is paid more, but is signed for one year less and as a forward is easier to bury in your lineup. So theoretically the Rangers could add some good futures and then roll Lucic as a 4th line forward for couple years while the team continues to rebuild.

Or a team like the Senators might want Zaitsev. They need to hit the cap floor and exchanging Ryan for him would alleviate the out of pocket impact to Melnyk if they can sign Stone. Again, a higher AAV but for fewer years for the Rangers.

But man, after typing that out it still sounds like a really, really dumb idea.

Oh god. I looked at the Leafs board at what they're talking for Kreider. Would not recommend.

My curiosity got the better of me.

Edit - looks like I was censored haha I'll just say if you want to have a bad time, go check their board out...
