Taking on a bad contract when dealing with another team is pretty common. Unconventional might be participating in a deal between two other teams as a facilitator. For example the Lightning and Senators want to deal, but the Sens won't take on salary and the Bolts have to dump some. So the Rangers get a few picks or a prospect in exchange for taking Callahan.

Still, the truly unconventional move is an offer sheet. I still have a hard time seeing a rebuilding team going with that option though. What guy could they offer sheet that guarantees that their 1st in 2020 isn't a lottery pick? Nobody that I can think of.

The players to offer sheet are Kapanen and Johnsson. There's no way the Leafs can sign both of them with Marner.

Yes they do. I have a post somewhere around here recently where I explain how it all works.
Maybe I am confused but my understanding is the money counts against the cap unless you need it for another player, and then it really doesn't count (i.e. you can go over by the amount of the LTIR contract).....the rules can confuse me on this for sure though.

So they’re saving cap space for something unconventional, which probably means eating salary from a desperate team.

They’ll have 9 million in space, plus the added amount of whatever is going out via Hayes, Zucc, and McQuaid

What the hell do they need so much space for?

That seems to be why they aren’t holding these guys out yet (or at least we know). They’d be forced to call up guys from Hartford which eats into their deadline space...

Oh god. I looked at the Leafs board at what they're talking for Kreider. Would not recommend.

Sounds about right. Sucks that we won't get more for Zucc though.

I think Zucc deal may come down to deadline day for that reason. Wait out the situations on Stone and Panarin and see how desperate the teams are that miss on them. Hayes will probably go sooner, if I had to guess.

It depends on how much cap space the team has compared to the cap hit of the player. There's a lot of math involved regarding daily costs, but in simplest terms, if the cap hit is 80 mil, we are 75 mil and we place a player with a 5 mil cap hit on LTIR, it does nothing except open a roster spot, which is what IR does anyway. If the cap it 80 mil, we are at 78 mil, and we place that 5 mil player on LTIR, we can go up to 83 mil. However, LTIR money can't be banked. It's use it or lose it. So that 3 mil excess at the beginning of the season is still only 3 mil at the trade deadline.

I'll see if I can find the other post I did.

Edit: Here it is:

I could envision a scenario where hes the top rental winger on the market, crazy enough.

If Stone re-signs in Ottawa and Nyquist does the same in Detroit that may very well be the case (I don't buy for a second that CBJ is trading Panarin.)

A top prospect and a 2nd sounds much better.

Even if they are in contract talks Zucc may not accept another discount or short term.
I guess he would take advice from his agent.

Everything is up in the air, the only thing we know for sure is that it will eventually land somewhere.

Anything more than $4,059,322 AAV requires a 1st round pick. No way should the Rangers give that up for either of those guys with how bad they project to be next year.

I know the Rangers are apparently saving their cap space for ”something unconventional”. Boston likes Hayes size. We Will see.
Is it fair to say that taking on a bad contract is not considered unconventional? Considering it has been done by several times each year and the Rangers did it last year?

Yea you offer sheet one of them for the maximum cost that is a 2nd round pick. There is no way for them to possibly have the cap space to match without getting rid of Marleau (pretty impossible given NMC) or Zaitsev (signed forever at 4.5M and basically can't be bought out) or Nylander of course. I expect they'd' figure out a way to make it work for Kapanen and let Johnsson go. This is a random thing I ran last night - without both of them - and I went rather conseratively on MArner at 10M and just filled in with minor leaguers. It's already over the cap and they also can't go much over in the offseason due to Horton. How are they fitting in 4M for Kapanen and say 3M for Johnsson?

Please please as hard as it is to root for a Boston team I hope they take them out in the first round...again

Removed the pic to save folks some scrolling.

You're right they're in a bad spot, but I think the plan has always been to trade Nylander in the off season when teams have more cap flexibility, and the Leafs would get one "loaded up" run before they have to make a deep cut. If they can finally work out a deal with Nylander and Pesce after Nylander's bonus is paid out, it probably makes the cap work.
