I really don't see Gorton taking on a Lucic/Horton type contract at all. We'll see.
There's a huge difference between the two contracts. Lucic has 4 x $6m after this season on a buyout proof contract. Horton is due $5.5m next year only and can be put on LTIR for a capped team. Different worlds.

The real question is, if the Canes wanted to move a D for Nylander, why didn't it get done earlier in the season? That's a weird dynamic they have going.
It didn't get done because Toronto didn't want to move Nylander.

Caps are 22nd in PK%. You have to imagine they look at Hagelin as a key player in addressing some PK concerns that they have. He'll be on their 3rd/4th line and eat up PK time. Jaskin is not a guy who can do that. DSP? He could, but he's on waivers. I expect him to be claimed.

I am no expert but Nylander is someone who doesn't scream elite.... so expectations with a prime offensive role is 70pts per year?

I project him as a high-end first liner in the 65-70 point range. I don't see him as a center, but as a play-making winger like Alex Tanguay. His contract is just about right for a player of that caliber. Maybe a couple hundred thousand too much but still in the ball-park.

He's the perfect compliment to a right-handed, shoot-first center like Zibanejad, in my opinion.

His d-zone exit and o-zone entries are top level. Puck possession and being able to transition the puck from your own zone to a scoring chance in the current league is huge.

Yeah he's fantastic on the rush. His cycle game is so-so, but if he was on a line with Zib and Kreider it could be absolute magic. Unfortunately you're looking at dealing Kreider to get a piece like Nylander in return.

If a deal like that came together, it could turn out to be another Zibanejad/Brassard like deal (although I think Kreider has a few more prime years left).

Not if Ottawa has anything to do with it.

I assume you're alluding to Duchene also holding up the market? I agree, to an extent. I just feel like his acquisition price will drive away a good number of teams that are interested in him...Hayes is probably next on most of their lists.

Just for something different, some speculation from a Vegas beat writer:

@bobbop mentioned Vegas had talked to the Rangers at some point and noted Shattenkirk could be an upgrade for them. Stands to reason they'd ship out a RHD to accommodate him. Miller would be appealing to a number of teams as a chip. Add Shattenkirk, then move Miller as a piece in a deal for a Stone or something.

Probably nothing, but at least it's not the same old.

I’ll take Miller as the return for Shattenkirk:naughty:

Not for nothing but Miller checks a lot of the boxes for what we’ve been rumored to be looking for. A 20 something right handed top 4 dman

Well, Miller's going to be 27 at the start of next season. Not sure he's a guy the Rangers look to bring in and build around. Might be a guy they could flip though.
Would be an actually good stop gap player for a few years then when some RD prospects are ready to be full time NHLers you can trade him

What exactly happened to Nylander? Is it that he's not playing with Mathews anymore? Haven't watched many Leafs games

Him for Kreider would actually be a decent trade I think... Leafs get a guy in his prime with plenty of playoff experience and we get a younger, (presumably) higher upside player that should hit his prime around the time we're competing again

He missed a bunch of the season and has been playing catch-up.
