Hayes has to go because he is the most replaceable player that happens to be on an expiring contract. Same for Zuccarello.

The window is closed. Sorry, Henrik. It hurts me to say it, but Gorton saw it too and got to work. We have too many holes and not turning Hayes and Zuccarello into 3 to 4 assets to address them in the next window is insanity. Whether or not Zibanejed and Hayes can take a team on a cup run is moot, they won't do it with this cast no matter what fantasy discount Hayes will never give July 1. This defense is... well its lottery level bad if it was in front of any other goalie.

So here we are. Zucc and Hayes are no less capable of winning than McDonagh. But they will face the same fate and get turned in for futures. They'll help another team go on a run and we'll stock up.

Literally the only rationale to keep Hayes is if you believe he's better suited to be our #1 instead of Zibanejed. More money, for less points, older, lower ceiling. Why gamble when you don't have to?

I'd say the odds of 3 out of 5 of those players being on the team in 3 years is fairly slim.

Not in disagreement, mostly I do not expect them to extend Hayes or sign Panarin, I am more in the wait and see on Kreider, and I'm not sure what to make of Skjei, but even them withstanding the amount of 2nd contracts coming through is going to be a ton should most of them make the NHL.

I said it in a couple threads but to repeat myself, it's not like these 2nd contracts are all that far off at least in relation to them signing any new 5 - 7 year contracts. Quite a few of those 2nd contracts will come up over that time period if the prospects pan out.

If one is optimistic about the prospects, I'm really more of a half full/empty opinion currently, yet I do expect many of them to make it and some of that group to be in the "better to sign long term now than bridge" category.

Great post. Especially the bolded. (I think you meant Zucc not Zbad tho)

Again, devil s advocate here. I am on the "trade Hayes" side. That said, with the way he has been playing defensively and the rate that he has been producing it for over a year, it shows that he is actually not all that easily replaceable. If he pushes it just a bit further, then he is a 60 point, two way second line center. That is pretty far from being easily replaceable.

But again, give all of the factors (movement restrictions and north of $7m possible salary come to mind very quickly), his best use may well be go garner more assets for the franchise.

And again McDonagh wasn’t easily replaceable. It’s not just about replaceablility. The reason I’m trading Hayes is that I believe he has more value to the Rangers as a trade asset right now than locking up long term.

I don’t like how people discount goalies as not being part of a team, a team plays bad and their goalie steals a game is treated as if it’s some third party who helped them out. It’s no different than a team playing bad and their star winger scoring a hat trick to make them win.

Star players usually influence the forwards around them and make them better, thus resulting in a more effective roster (or at least line).

A goalie standing on his head is usually bailing out a team that is either underperforming or outmatched.

But goalies are part of the team
Idk it just feels like when people say x team would suck without x player, yea but x player is on x team so it doesn’t matter

Therein lay the conundrum- Names is tradable, Smith at 70%??
I don't see the conundrum. For next season you will not be retaining Zucc. You have Names that is completely trade-worthy. You can easily retain on Smith and that will only run for next year. So I mean we're talking about $10 mil (without me looking at the actual numbers) and Kevin is already being paid a chunk of his potential next salary. So really of freed money we're looking at like what $2 mil. That leaves plenty of wiggle room going forward to approach a Panarin signing. Following season with less buy-out implications on Staal you have more money there.

Why trade Kevin when realistically you can keep him? And no body is acknowledging it.

None of this is a knock on him. It really does come down to the rinse and repeat fear that Jas and GAS have outlined. I don't think his departure will pass without growing pains. Howden, who will come in around 40 points this season, will take time to settle into Hayes' role.

But I prefer to gamble on Howden doing it for now until Chytil or Anderson push him to the 3rd line. I prefer to take a chance on the futures Hayes will return. Use the cap elsewhere. Choosing the safe route here is choosing mediocrity and another generation of 1st round playoff games.

Ignore that Athletic article about expansion. They did preface it by saying its early and we have few commitments to forecast, but they boiled it down to Kreider possibly being the guy to expose. Him or Vesey. Maybe Fast.

Think about how difficult it is to predict the expansion draft in 2.5 years. In the middle of the 2014-15 season, I don't think many would have predicted that the Rangers leave Antti Raanta, Michael Grabner, Jesper Fast, and Nick Holden unprotected and see Vegas claim Oscar Lindberg.

Hajek has played 26 career pro games and likely won't reach eligibility. Vesey and Fast both are pending UFAs between now and then.

Basically what I'm saying is, DeAngelo will be the expansion casualty. Take it to the bank.
