Not Ussr. Just Russia. But players who played for both Ussr and Russia do count.

Ovechkin - Datsuyk - Kovalchuck
Bure - Fedorov - Mogilny
Panarin - Malkin - Kucherov
Kaprizov - Yashin - Tarasenko

Fetisov - Zubov
Conchar - Konstantivov
Markov - Kasatonov

Goalies are really hard. Nabakov, Bob, Vali, Khabulin, Varlamov, Sorokin,
Shesterkin. Could make a case for all of them.

Discuss!

Oh crap. Forgot that. Who should have their spots?
Well, they played actively during the time of the Russian Federation so the fact they did not represent the Russian Federation shouldn’t matter so I wouldn’t change the lineup.

On the other hand, their old CSKA teammates could then be counted too…

I’m a bit unsure of the specifics. Are we looking at NHL time only? And if they played for both, are we only looking at how good they were for the Russian national team? Larionov for instance obviously is a lot more highly regarded for his career in the 80s, but did end up playing for Russia at the 96 World Cup and then again for the 02 Olympics. Fetisov being on there suggests Larionov is eligible, but I don’t know what version of him we’d get. I wouldn’t have NHL Fetisov on the top pair (and maybe not at all), so maybe we do get the 80s versions?

If we get 80s Larionov, I’d put him on over Yashin, and even if we only get NHL Larionov, I’d consider putting the ‘94 Sharks version or the Russian 5 version on as well. Yashin was more talented and obviously had a couple big years in Ottawa, including his (questionable) Hart runner-up year, but he wasn’t great defensively and wouldn’t be on PP1. His attitude was also questionable, though maybe that’d be different on Russia. But I think there’s so much offensive talent already that it could use more defensive acumen besides Fedorov and Datsyuk. Mogilny was good too, and Bure was a dangerous short handed threat, but another PK option makes sense imo.

Just as long its about from 1991 and onward.

How about moving out Tarasenko and replace him with Larionov? Im sure he is smart enough to play wing. And in that way Yashin is still there. Or sneak in Kovalev.

How good was Makarov past 1991? Maybe he should have a spot.

We all know about the skill guys, it's kinda beaten to death, I'm more interested to know how the best checking-line would look like?

What about Brylin–Nemchinov–Nikolishin?

Good shouts. Didn't Brylin and Zelepukin play together in a checking sorta line with the Devils? Zelepukin before his injuries was a great two way guy, a bit more aggressive and physical compared to the stereotypical cerebral positioning-first defensively responsible forward of the Soviet school of hockey.

But do you even need a checking line when your top two lines are centered by Selke winners and you can throw Larionov in there as well if you're worried about defensive responsibilities?

Lets try to make a team out of players, who never played for team USSR.

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Nichushkin
Panarin - Datsyuk - Kucherov

Kovalchuk - Zinovyev - Radulov
Tereshenko, Yashin

Volchenkov - Gonchar
Markov - Zub

Bobrovsky

Why did Zinovyev never play in NHL? Very good player. So was Zaripov.

Would any team besides Canada really challenge an all-time Russian team? Perhaps the states or Sweden but still don’t think they could contend with all that firepower and amazing goaltending, with a still surprisingly good defense.

Probably USA-Sweden could depending on the format, say a classic cup canada best of 3 for sure, Russia like Canada would leave a lot of great players out of the team that will not help them.

You just need 3 great line+ 6 good D and a good goaltender to challenge, USA, Swede would dress that.

France just challenged team USA in basketball in the last olympics.... woman won by a single point, men was a 5 pts games with less than 4 minutes left.

USA-Sweden could challenge anyone, a team with Lidstrom-Salming-Hedman-Karlsson-Lundqvist can make things happen, same for the great D-goaltender the USA will have.

Yep and keep in mind this is prime Karlsson and Hedman we are talking about, not the current versions.

All time Czechs and Finland would be strong and could challenge too
