McDonagh and Hayes are so completely unrelated. And I don’t mean to be rude because I don’t like the idea of blowing someone’s point of view off but if that’s where this situation takes you then we’re not going to see eye to eye.

McD has next to no tread left on his tires, had been beaten and battered for a couple years leading up to (and here’s your third distinctive difference) was going to net term that would take that package of a player to his 34 season. No thanks. We did McD a favor sending him to Tampa where he can be relied upon yet part of a bigger picture and not so accountable.

Hayes on the other hand had proven to be durable (the best ability is availability) and is going to net him a contract term that takes him to only 32 and we could maybe keep it to 31. Opposed to McD, where you could reasonably argue him staying in a situation where he would have been heavily relied upon would probably sooner brought up a decline, you could very fairly argue that at the very least Kevin has plateaued as a 55 point 2 way center with little to no baggage. You could just as fairly argue he may even progress a bit more pushing himself into the 60 point shut down center convo, and those guys aren’t growing on trees.

We shouldn’t have kept McD so we didn’t. We should keep Hayes even if it’s only to trade him in 2 years and I’m worried we won’t.

You don’t think there’s a market for Smith retained right now? To me he’s played better than last year for sure but I understand why Detroit fans were happy to see him go. I wasn’t in the re-sign Smith camp but he’s played well enough where at $2-2.5 mil he should be able to be moved. And if we’re talking about creating opportunities for this pipeline of kids to get shots, and we are serious about freeing up money, I’d take the best offer I could find immediately.

And again McDonagh wasn’t easily replaceable. It’s not just about replaceablility. The reason I’m trading Hayes is that I believe he has more value to the Rangers as a trade asset right now than locking up long term.
I am not disputing that. The difference between the two however, is that one was getting worse and one is getting much better.

But I prefer to gamble on Howden doing it for now until Chytil or Anderson push him to the 3rd line. I prefer to take a chance on the futures Hayes will return. Use the cap elsewhere. Choosing the safe route here is choosing mediocrity and another generation of 1st round playoff games.
I get it. I understand and agree. It has just gotten to the point that in people's hurry to trade him, he is being denigrated. His level of play is NOT of a 2nd/3rd line tweener. His level of play right now is NOT found on half the teams in this league. That is my point. I understand the reasoning to trade him and have outlined my own. But I think that people need to call a spade a spade

Writers for The Athletic seems to thing we'll lose Vesey or Hajek to Seattle expansion. Thoughts?

Rangers could opt for the 8 Skater protection if they want to keep him that badly. Otherwise another player will end up being traded

Zibanejad
Kreider
Andersson
Chytil
Skjei
Pionk
DeAngelo
Hajek

And, now McDonagh isn’t. All reports have him playing at a high level this year.

This is true, but you can't discount his decreased ice-time and having other high end defenders who can play against top talent as well. Moreover, the team around his is far better, not just on D. I think it was pretty obvious he should have had a far better year if utilized correctly in Tampa.

I also still want nothing to do with that contract, regardless of his play this or next year. A 6 year contract beginning at age 30 is a recipe for disaster.

And I think we should probably also trade Hayes.

protecting 8 skaters over 7/3/1 makes no sense especially when we are deeper at forward than defense. by going with 8 skaters you get to protect 1 additional D while exposing 3 more forwards

McDonagh is also healthy now, he played last season with a sports hernia.

6 year deal starting at 30 isn't the worst thing for a team like Tampa. They're firmly in their window, they're taking their shot. McD will be worth the contract at least the first 3 or 4 years.

I agree. But in terms of wanting him back on the Rangers, the reason i wouldn't, is because while he might be worth it for a few years, by the time this team can compete, probably a minimum of two years, but more likely 3-4, the contract could be an albatross.

Maybe I'm just scarred after the cliffs that Staal and Girardi fell off of.

I agree the deal for TB is very fair. But it’s not about his level of play. It’s about playoffs and his health. The shoulder issues are real, and he needs to show he can survive the playoffs which was an issue with us. I can’t wait to watch him vs TML in the playoffs.

Oh no, I totally agree with you. Just saying I see his deal as fine for Tampa.

Ignore that Athletic article about expansion. They did preface it by saying its early and we have few commitments to forecast, but they boiled it down to Kreider possibly being the guy to expose. Him or Vesey. Maybe Fast.

I dropped reading it once they put Gettinger on the protected list. Just before I had my list (we kind of discussed the topic here before the article came out) and this inclusion was surprising so I had to scroll down to see who was left exposed instead and when I saw Kreider I stopped reading.
