Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XVII What will Santa Gorton bring us?

First comes the "We Want Zucc" chants (which Sam clarifies aren't We Want Boo chants), signs saying "Zuccarello, you're my everything"

Then someone takes out a full page ad in the NY Times outlining why the way the Rangers are treating Zuccarello is disgusting.

Then billboards all over town demanding Gorton lose his job over this.

Then the angry militized mob storms MSG.
You left out the hurt economy due to lack of sales of his jerseys.

Rangers could opt for the 8 Skater protection if they want to keep him that badly. Otherwise another player will end up being traded

Zibanejad
Kreider
Andersson
Chytil
Skjei
Pionk
DeAngelo
Hajek
If this is the best four defensemen we have available to protect two years from now, we are in deep shit.

That explains why the cap ceiling may not come in as high as Bettman said it would.
It all comes together now. The Rangers (who have always known Bettman hates them) have set out to extract revenge by hamstringing the NHL of it's favorite sales item.

I’ve got a plan to pivot away from Smith, Staal, Shatty over the next 3 years:

2019: Spooner 900k, Beleskey 825k buried, DG at 3.61 M

Maybe just maybe we can find a pos GM and trade Smith at 30% retained which would carry 1.3M hit next 3 years. Buying him out adds cap hit term and the 2nd year is vicious.

Total: 6.64 M

2020: Spooner/Beleskey off books, DG down to 1.11M, Smith at 1.3

Buy out Staal, 2 years: 3.57M this year
Trade Shatty at deadline with 1 yr remaining, 20% retained that will show up in 2021

Total: 5.98 M

2021: DG at 1.11, Staal at 1.07, Smith at 1.3, Shatty at 1.33

Total: 4.82 M

2022: only DG last 1.11 remains, meanwhile we graduate some D prospects over time and look like this in no particular order. Not counting future drafts, trades, or FAs:

LD: Skjei, Miller, Hajek, Lindgren, Rykov
RD: ADA, Pionk, Keane, Lundkvist
Swingman: Claesson if he hangs around

I stopped reading here, because it would be a miracle to get rid of him at 50%, let alone 30....I think since your whole plan hinges on this, it would fail.

Hopefully some combination of Miller, Lundkvist, Rykov, Keane and whomever else we draft between now and then will be among our 4 best. None of them will need to be protected. If that happens, it's likely that at least one of Skjei, Pionk, ADA and Hajek will be gone.

I have a bad feeling that we will be seeing Zucc in a Penguins jersey this season, and it won’t look all that bad on him.

You can say a Zucc trade will be a PR disaster for the Rangers, and it's not even a joke. The front office knows.
Our fan base has seen the trading of a captain twice in the last 5 seasons. Outside of a few vocal, emotional fans, there was no management backlash.

It will be sad to see Zucc go, but "PR disaster?" No. No it won't be.

Kind of random, but I have a bad feeling that we will be seeing Zucc in a Penguins jersey this season, and it won’t look all that bad on him.
If they pony up the clear best offer, so be it. I'm past the point of caring what our division rivals do. I want my team to win the cup. The best way to do that is to stock up on young assets and draft picks. If that draft capital happens to come from our rivals, what do I care? Take the best offer, no exceptions.

jesus christ will you stop with this crap

If you think so it's fine with me, I don't care.

But if you move outside hfboards and into other social media you'll get a very different view on fans reaction to a possible trade.

Social media is a cesspool where the shit rises to the top. It's indicative of nothing.

If the fanbase was that upset, they'd be chanting for Gorton's head during home games.

I will agree to an extent. I wasn’t happy seeing guys like McDonagh and Miller go, but I wanted them to be traded. I knew it would be better for us in the long-term. And I know for a fact that trading Zucc is the right choice for the franchise, even if the Penguins have the best offer. But this is Zucc that we’re talking about. He’s not even my favorite player, but there’s something about him that makes him one of the best Rangers of all-time. If he gets traded to a rival, so be it, but it still sucks.

Not sure I see it as a disadvantage to weaken your rivals future as the timing of when that would come into play should coincide with when your team is on the rise.

There was some talk here in town that the Pens were trying to move on from Brassard but there wasn't much of a market for him. If they can't move him it'll be interesting to see if they try and make a deal to get him going but I'm not sure they can afford to make a big rental deal. They're pretty barren outside of Addison; though Drozg is a somewhat interesting prospect.
