So Dubas caved at the last minute it seems. I believe that was the number the Nylander camp was asking for.

Betting he gets dealt at some point.

So the inevitable happened and WN signed at under 7 M. It was very strange he Did not do so earlier. But I guess it paid off as he got about a million more by Holding out all week. I think he gets dealt in the offseason. Again, to Carolina

So the supposed waiting period created by the Nylander situation is resolved. The bad play of late may be good timing, although I don't think the front office was ever truly fooled by their nice run.

L.A., Pittsburgh and Carolina seem to be in business. St. Louis too but I think they will be content with a goalie for now.

Hayes came back down to earth the last 3 games. If there is a great deal on the table, I would jump on it now. If it, ride it out because his consistency is becoming a trademark.

It's the structure, less so than the number. Willie makes $20M from yesterday to July 1st 2019. Think about that. A kid coming off of his ELC. Had his 1st year burned... on merit... but still.... back to back 61 point seasons. 22 Years Old. $20M in 7 months after his rookie deal by holding out.

This precedent is going to be an issue in the lock-out. How many teams in the league will be able to do that with their kids coming off of ELCs?

So does the RFA signing deadline get moved up? Nov 1st? Bettman might go after si going bonuses too. Anything that compromises the league's leverage with negotiations is a target. Their issues are always how GMs circumvent the CBA and then we lose hockey over bargaining the regulations.

Wasn't Bettman one of the founders of the NBA's cap structure? I feel like something akin to Bird rights are essential for the NHL moving forward as the best talent in the league keeps getting younger. A team shouldn't be penalized for drafting and developing elite talent, even if it's an obnoxious douchebag franchise like Toronto.

I love how it's always Bettman who is blamed for lockouts when it's actually owners and the NHLPA causing the problems every time

I'm not sure about the RFA deadline, but it would make sense imo. Last couple of years you saw a bunch of RFA's hold out, you can stop that quickly, and I don't see it as a big issue... but the bigger concern is the SB clauses. It's the Loui Eriksson, Kyle Okposo, David Backes, & Lucic type deals that there are some serious regrets about. The thought is, that the buy-out proof of that type of deal... in other words, if the guy just calls it a day after signing the deal... he's still entitled to the signing bonus.

All of those guys, to one extreme extent or another saw their games dip considerably.

As the past has shown from one side of the equation, lock-outs happen when owners and GM's try to protect themselves from their own mistakes. This is going to be a big one. I don't think the NHLPA will go for any type of claw-back from guaranteed money, but I could see something along the lines of... a SB can only be 50% of that year's salary.

Willie Nyls for example has a base salary of $780K next year. But his signing bonus in July is $8.3M. that more that 10x his base salary. Think about that. How many organizations payout a bonus that's 10X times your base?

Ok, you're right. I use it as shorthand for the owners. It's too wordy to say this group led by Jacobs wants more restrictions. And then say this group led by the Arizona group wants revenue calculated this way. Or this group wants a shorter term on contracts.

And take it up with the writers because they name him over the signing bonus issue. It makes his job harder when $100m is getting paid out during a lockout and owners want to play.

I don't feel bad though. He wants a unified front and he wants to filter all discussions through his office. He owns it, good and bad. There is no way most issues are decided unanimously, no matter what they release to the press.

Well said.

I mention RFAs not only because of recency but because a large amount of the reaction was that the deal was essentially there, it took the deadline to get it finalized. This could have been resolved any time basically.

This one will be interesting. The impression I get is that no one wants to be the one to exercise the out clause, but there are things they want to fix. So does this 2020 clause pass? Do they negotiate an extension here? The league wants the World Cup and a seamless transition for Seattle. They want to fix the stuff we mentioned. What will they concede besides Olympics?

So Scherbak claimed by LA. Bummer. When did they modify the waiver rules? It used to be one claim and then you'd go to the back on the line for 30 days.

They never changed the rules. It has never been like that. People often assume it is that way, because of how it works in fantasy sports.

Waiver priority is always determined by the position in the standings.

I enjoyed seeing Gettinger get a shot, but Beleskey should be up. For that matter, it’s good seeing Fogarty up here, but if he’s just going to be 4C, that should go to Nieves.

I don't remember seeing a Rangers game EVER with 6 rookie forwards. That alone was worth it. Think about it. Lias, Chytil, Gettinger, Fogarty, Lettieri, Howden. All rookies. 50% of our forward group consisted of rookies.
