Making trades or keeping the player longer. The cap difficulty the dead space creates outweighs the moves made with that money. It causes a weaker bottom 6 and bottom pair, and those things are critical to playoff success.
And making trades won't hurt our depth? Moving someone like Chytil or Lindgren rather than buying out Goodrow would be better for the team, short and long term? I mean, if we can move Goodrow without adding assets to him, sure, go for it. But then a buyout isn't necessary.

Buyouts are a tool to be used. Are they perfect? No. But there aren't always perfect solutions. Sometimes is about choosing the option that is the least bad. And keep in mind, GMs don't last forever. Will Drury be more concerned with saving cap space 3+ years into the future, or with keeping players he doesn't have replacements for?

Sorry, I did not clarify. I didnt mean trading other players, I meant trading the players that we buy out. So not trading Chytil and Lindgren to keep Goodrow, but just trade Goordrow instead of buying him out, hypothetically.

If we can trade him without adding assets, sure, absolutely. But there does come a point where we are better off buying him out. We may not agree on where the line is, but it definitely exists.

Hopefully the cap goes up by 4.5 mil and we don't need to move him, or we can trade him and get something back for him.

Could you imagine flipping Goodrow for a first at some point, like Tampa paid for him? Pure excellence if possible.

The only signing that is inexcusible is Halak. Too much money. Should have just signed Domingue and used him as the backup. That extra 1 million is Motte.

Then there are the buyouts, that's Vatrano.

No more buyouts, nothing over 1 million for a backup.
We can have Dominique lose games like Halek is for less money. Halek is done washed up. If it was 750000 then I would not mind but double that to do nothing

we need him now more than ever

he will save us during this Chytil drought

Halak looked great in his first game. The whole team was looking great at the time.

What happened?

I’m starting to think we might see Halak pull a Biron.

The Rangers really need to mix up the lines and change things. Being too predictable is a sign of shallow lazy coaching in my opinion

I've thought for a while now that this team feels like a heavy team trying to play a fast team's game. The kids are all great on the boards. Panarin is suprisingly good at coming away with the puck. Zibanejad and Kreider both could own the boards if they wanted to. But instead of trying to create off of the cycle, the top guys want to create off of the rush.
I actually have been thinking they’re cycling more than ever and doing a good job. They’re controlling the puck in the opponent’s zone but just not producing. Just my opinion. Probably numbers would confirm or disprove that. No idea.

this is exactly what i'm seeing. we control games far more with way fewer prolonged possession and flurries of chances given up than at any point last year. we also get out of our zone way cleaner.

right now though we dont create anything off zone entries, and we're like 0fer on the season on breakaways / odd man rushes so nothing is going well offensively.

but yea we just do not stress teams in the zone and i think a big part of that is no one gets the puck and just forces their way to the middle to get a shot. we're so easy to defend because everyone stays along the wall with the puck. no one forces the issue and bulls their way to the middle to create their own shot...thats the kind of stuff that takes teams out of their structure and gets them scrambling. when you never look to shoot teams will give you the outside to tie up in front and bait us into inevitably making a pass they're sitting on.

btw confidence needing to be built up in a few guys and going through a rough patch its ugly but its far too early to panic. that said, one fairly big move i would be considering is trying laf as the top lw w/ mika and kakko. kreider has been completely invisible in every game 5 on 5....hasnt done much pp either but keep him in that spot. 5 on 5 though we need production from mikas line and kreider hasnt been creating anything at all. its really only a big deal because those two are so close but realistically that decision needs to be about what works on the ice

14. Several sources described Bettman’s revelation that the cap could go up $4M next season as “ambitious,” but have also indicated that the league legitimately believes this is possible based on early-season revenue projections. While I was surprised at the possibility, I wasn’t surprised that Bettman would paint an optimistic picture. That’s what he’s always done, and we shouldn’t expect otherwise. It’s also very possible he wants to show that the NHL is a healthy investment in a challenging economy. One of the indicators to watch is the Canadian dollar. Apparently, the estimates include a valuation of the Canadian buck at 75 cents.

The Canadian dollar is at 72-74 cents. 73.51 yesterday.

The DTD injuries for Chytil, Kravtsov, Blais, and Carpenter have forced the club to carry 14 forwards, which is leaving them without any cap space to play with at the deadline.

Sadly this is the way it's headed. Guy has been a complete non-factor outside of the Minnesota and Winnipeg games.
The Rangers have been a non factor outside the Tampa and Minnesota games. A local high school team could've beat the Ducks. The whole team has nothing going for it right now. Top to bottom. Other than Panarin.

How about this? Miller-Fox. Jones-Trouba. Lindgren-Schneider.
It's so glaringly obvious these should be the pairs. Some here have been saying it since the summer. It's amazing how much more in touch with logic people on these boards are than the people running the team right now.

Kreider - Zibanejad - Panarin
Lafreniere - Chytil - Kakko
Blais - Trocheck - Kravtsov/Gauthier
Vesey - Carpenter - Goodrow
Reaves

Fox - Miller
Trouba - Schneider
Jones - Lindgren
Hajek

With the way things are going we wont need cap space. We are in the toughest division in hockey. The wasted points against teams we should beat are crippling. Might be on the outside by December and in the Metro, that means you might as well be winless.
