Bear is not good. He’s better than Hajek but he isn’t the upgrade they need. There is a reason he isn’t getting any minutes in Carolina
He also has a $2.2M cap hit, so it's basically a non-starter for the Rangers

Hunt is replaceable, but he was good depth who proved he could play up and down the lineup, if needed.

Imo they lost him for a few reasons, one of which is Kravstov and Vesey. Both of those players better prove it wasn't a mistake waiving Hunt, although I was impressed by what I saw from Rydahl and he likely be the next man up.

I'm glad we didn't rush Othmann and Cuylle like we've done with so many young kids but the 4th line is a problem. It's crazy that for 500 or 600k more we could have had Motte over carpenter. Yeah yeah I know carpenter is a center but so far looks like he sucks
Yes if we signed a cheaper backup who can lose games like Halak for a million less we could of kept motte. Put we paid halak a million to much to play like crap.

I know we have the benefit of hindsight and no GM would've done anything differently in 2019 and 2020, but:

Suzuki instead of Andersson
Dobson instead of Kravtsov
Zegras instead of Kakko
Stutzle instead of Laf

Sigh

Update on how the Rangers have fared since those articles dropped:

0-1-2
-6 goal differential
PP 1/12
Laf & Kakko combined 0 points

Picture this Phil Kessel cost less than Reaves Carpenter and Hunt combined 🤣 imagine if the Rangers had signed Phil Kessel with Trocheck and Panarin instead of Vitali Glasstsov. I rather go after Kessel instead of Kane who would cost less than Kane which would be at leat 1 first round pick and Othmann way too much for a rental.

With Chytil out, the lack of speed and skating on this team is more apparent - especially on the lower lines.

It really showed last night against Colorado IMO, who have a team of very good skaters.

I hate to say it but Lafreniere looked like he took a step back in the skating department. Hopefully hes just off to a slow start. Kakko was never a burner out there and Vesey, Carpenter, Goodrow, Blais, Reaves and even Kravstov while learning the pace are doing just enough to keep up.

They are chasing instead of dictating, they are caught instead of escaping.

This was one of the reasons I wanted Motte back, this team as currently constructed will be exposed in a long series against a better skating team. They need more speed on the lower lines.

And we knew this coming into the season as far as depth and the cap goes.

Trying to keep this in perspective. The team last night was a shell (especially without Chytil) of the team that went to the conf finals. Copp, Vatrano, Motte and Braun were all perfect pieces that made this team so much deeper. Its pretty amazing the difference 5 players can make in the right spots.

Kratsov actually showed good speed at times, part of it was the pace that his line goes, and trying to match them.
I’m not in love with him or anything like jovo but he looked at least a step faster than Laf last night.
He did a bunch of other things mediocre/bad but speed wasn’t one.

Also Laf doesn’t look slower, he seems to be matching panarins off pace. Couple of times trochek was flying into the zone and Laf was matching him fine.

I think some gms would have gone differently on the first two.

Kravstov did look like he picked up the pace, but I am not talking about straight line speed.

In free space Laf can skate, yes. But with the puck he needs to keep his feet moving. Defenders close on him very quickly. He also gets burned in the d zone if he gets turned around or needs to make a quick transition. There is still a lot of work he needs to do in that department.

He's played 2 games

Who is better and cheaper that was available?
I like the Halak signing, but Greiss and Lindgren were both good alternatives and signed for less with the Blues and the Caps.

Could Kuzmenko become available? Would help solidify the third line
Chytil will solidify the third line, and the fourth.
It pushes one of vesey or goodrow down further and let’s us potentially scratch carpenter.
It’ll also give the third line more offensive punch.

I keep the Kakko and Laf picks but I up there ante on Buch to Edmonton for 8OA so I could also draft Zegras and I move Kreider for Robertson and a first, then package that first with the Skjei first to get up for Lundell. By just changing those two things:

Panarin Zibanejad Kakko
Lafreniere Zegras Chytil
Robertson Lundell Kravtsov
Goodrow Rydahl Vesey

Lindgren Fox
Miller Trouba
Jones Nils
Robertson Hajek

Plus cap space (and lack of such a desperate need for future forwards that you can spare some assets) to make a run at Chychrun.
