It makes no sense to move Strome this year. Especially in a flat cap, he still has a year left at a reasonable AAV, plus it is not a seller's market. Add to that that we are *maybe* pushing for a playoff spot, there's no way management moves him this year. Next year, definitely.

It makes a ton of sense to move him right now. There is not as much on the market to choose from. He could fetch a 1st and prospect. Its at the least worth shopping him around. A flat cap really means nothing, its going to be flat next year too. Given his career norm, he may regress next year and then your selling at a lower value and only as a rental. Right now, at a good cap hit, the acquiring team has him for next year too.

idk, you might get more for him this year then when he’s a rental.

Surprised no one has posted the clip of McGuire saying the team played better for Knoblough/Drury because it was a different message than whatever Quinn usually is saying

Edit: Just kidding I didn’t scroll back far enough

I don't think X's and O's. I think Drury and Knoblauch told them to not think too much. Lightened the mood.

Drury was a case study in performing under pressure. Probably passed on some advice or got them refocused.

It's interesting that this leaked. The team went to painful lengths to downplay the Hartford staff and heap praise on Quinn. Made sure to give him all the credit. Now a different message is getting out.
It's what I speculated on, when it happened. There was a noticeable difference within the team.

The chances of strome getting traded are about equal to me winning the lotto. I know many Ranger fans on this board pick a player and nothing will ever be good enough for them so they want them traded for next to nothing but what message would that send to players? They are trying for a playoff spot and you trade one of their better players. Its not happening.

I think if a trade does happen its a hockey trade for now and future seasons. No prospects and no unloading players just to unload them. I am not even sure they move Smith which I don't agree with. I want him gone and to see tarmo get a chance but I don't think that's what JG wants.

Aside from the additional run they'd get from him this year (and yeah, this does matter), everything else there still applies if they want to move him during the summer.

But don't underestimate the power of a team that loses earlier than expected in the playoffs or one that goes further than they probably should have. Those teams will be ripe to be taken advantage of in July and August.

Who said trade Strome for “next to nothing”? A 1st and a quality prospect is not nothing in the grand scheme of a rebuild and when the team has no Center depth in their prospect system.

The message it sends? Its a young team that has a bigger picture longterm. Its a message to someone like Chytil to step up. Let the kids make the push for the playoffs, they are the future.

The Rangers are 5 points behind Boston. Boston has 2 games in hand and arent even 100% right now. They have quite a few games against Buffalo and Philly upcoming. I think its a false sense of hope to think the Rangers will make the playoffs. And IF they just barely get in, they still have too many holes. They arent taking down the top teams in the East. They are weak down the middle. They have an awful 3rd pair. Their bottom 6 has been mediocre, in part due to inexperience, line combos, and ice time. Strome isn’t propelling this team any further than its destined to be. But the longterm benefits could be impactful in what you get for Strome.

5 behind Boston, with 18 games remaining.

9 behind Pittsburgh.

I dont see the complete collapse happening for those teams. Rangers would have to go on the best hot streak of any team this season.

The draft kind of sucks this year. Want to move Strome for a 1st in 2022 fine but getting somewhere in the 20’s this year which is where a playoff team is likely picking is also likely to get you a future 3rd liner and possibly a bust. I wouldn’t do it for that.

I think the biggest deadline surprise we’ve had as ranger fans was Gaborik to Columbus. Came totally out of the blue

They’re not making the playoffs barring a miracle, but another first round pick doesn’t really help this team, and the prospect coming with that first is probably not a special one. This team has an embarrassment of riches in the prospect pool and literally not enough spots to go around. Adding a mid first that may yield a player ready to contribute four years from now is probably not the best use of a key trade chip.

Strome himself is a weird situation. He’s obviously got great chemistry with Panarin, and is having a great year in general, but I have my doubts about him being a big contributor in the playoffs. Trading him opens up a huge hole in an already thin C corps though.

If there was a Brass for Zibanejad type trade on the table, you’d have to consider it. But I think it’s more likely that we see a trade like that in the off-season and that Strome would only be one component of the deal.

Management certainly has their hands full in the next year or so. They need to nail their player evaluations, properly project the contention window, and make deals to fill holes, upgrade weaknesses, and most importantly align to the timeline.

It’s a tough puzzle to put together.

Eh, not necessarily. The whole draft is an even bigger crapshoot than normal this year. I think there’s a good chance that the best players aren’t the first guys off the board.

That said, I have no interest in trading Strome for a pick. If they move him, the truth needs to be an upgrade that’s ready to contribute within a year or two.

Not at all, why do you ask? Did i say something inaccurate?
I don’t think McGuire is smart because of what he said. I thought sharing it would be kinda funny, given this boards feelings about Quinn. And no, I don’t credit Knoblach or Drury for turning our season around.

In my opinion, we’re still the young and inconsistent team that we were earlier in the season. Only difference is our big boys are producing now whereas earlier in the year they were sucking ass.

One of the weirder things I've seen was someone complaining about Strome having a point scoring streak because "he doesn't deserve it."

Not saying this is happening - but this would likely be the legitimate question if the right deal came along the next 4 days - What would You rather have for the long run:

Ryan Strome

or

Adam Lowry (signed as UFA for money similiar to $trome) + late 1st rounder + mid level developed prospect (a la Pepe)

???
