I could see a team biting on Smith at 50% retained for a mid-late round pick

I know it’s cool to hate Smith but I actually wouldn’t be opposed to being him back next year assuming the price reasonable

you could do a lot worse as a 6/7 type guy than him (aka Jack Johnson)

If you gave him Johnson's contract and role, I think more people would be OK with Smith. He just shouldn't be playing every game.

Bingo. Rooney, Blackwell & Bitetto are here for Seattle exposure. Keep them, dump Smith & PDG.

True, though if someone offers a decent return for Blackwell, you could take it and extend PDG for another year to meet the exposure requirement. If you offer PDG a one-year deal at around the same salary, he probably takes it as he is not guaranteed to get an NHL contract in free agency. And I have no problem with him as a 13th forward.

100% agreed. If you can get a 3rd or a 4th him at the deadline and they are ok moving forward without him, then pull the trigger. Otherwise, I think he's a very solid option as a 6/7 guy.

Question becomes is that what he wants? I could see him trying to find a more permanent gig on a different team.

Do you ride Shesty in the back to back? would be nice if he could get an easy 17 save shutout tomorrow

I think Georgiev will be in there against the Islanders. If there is a team they'd want to get him in there against is them. He's done really well in his short career against them.

he’s a UFA to be and we aren’t making a run.
Why hold him? If you want him back you can sign him again this summer.

as for those other changes, they’re going to happen eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thought Rooney had a two year contract. Or is that Blackwell? Either way, i would definitely sign him to be the 4th lien center.

Of course the other changes are going to happen at some point. But it will not be this year and much to the wailing of some, will not be to start the next year.

Not convinced that PDG has any trade value at all but never hurt to try I suppose. Get another seventh rounder

Both Rooney and Blackwell signed for two years, likely due to the expansion draft exposure requirement. For the expansion draft, each team is required to expose 2 forwards that have both (1) played in the requisite number of games over the past two seasons, and (2) are under contract for next season. Right now, Rooney and Blackwell are the only forwards that meet the requirements and are not expected to be protected. Howden, Gauthier, and PDG have met the games played requirement, but are not under contract for next season. So if Blackwell or Rooney are traded, we need to sign at least one of those forwards and expose them to Seattle.

I kinda feel for Goat, good guy most likely. I thought it was a good asset management trade at the time but no room for him. Laf fell into our laps, Kratvsov turned it around, and Barron is already the superior player. If we protect prodigal Howden then we’ll lose him for nothing in ED which is a 1st world problem I suppose

I like Barron, but how is he already better than Gauthier?

I'm late on this, but glad to see the team cancel practice to go get vaccinated. I guess they all got J&J, as Geo posted his card on Instagram and he got J&J

I got the J&J last Thursday and All of Friday I was exhausted and nauseous. I hope the team does better than I did.

I think so on limited evidence, all around at least. Gauthier doesn’t seem to think the game well and not use his attributes consistently. Barron seems to play to his strengths.

In the AHL... Gauthier was dominating the AHL last season. I think Barron has a higher ceiling but he isn't there yet.

That's a tough question because they are different players. I really like Gauthier's skill and size and he is learning the game. But I don't see him on the PK and he may not think the game well enough for the PP. I agree with you that Quinn has mishandled him and I can't understand why the Rangers aren't using this year to find out exactly what they have in him. I have watched Barron extensively, at Cornell on ESPN+ and all 14 Hartford games this year. I am a huge fan. I thought he was ready to come out after his sophomore season. He is a really smart player, uses his size well, and has a wicked shot. He plays PK and PP at Hartford. He brings attributes to the game that Gauthier does not. But Gauthier is a much better skater. Barron lacks the quickness to be elite. He's having a very good but not great year at Hartford. I think both of these guys are NHL players and I think the real question is not who is better but whether the Rangers will use these guys to maximize their abilities.

I believe if Toronto misses out in Savard then Smith becomes their plan B.

I like Buch. Hell, I like everybody on this team. They really seem like a good group of guys. And they all seem to get along well.

However, they have the inconsistencies of a veteran team(slow starter) and a young team(inconsistent from game to game) at the same time. Which is weird.

If the management can convince Buch to stay here for 5.5/6 deal, you gotta do it. Management will have to get deals on these players that are honestly, more valuable to the Rangers than on the market. I don't think anyone will offer what some people suggest on here for Buch. Get him at the right price, create depth in the lineup, profit. Haha

On another note, they should trade Smith and Howden. I don't think PDG has enough value to any team to give up any pick. Howden is younger so could fetch something. Then they should resign Smith this summer for 1/1. He might take it and he would be a perfect #7 with the ability to play left, right and forward. Though, hopefully, not forward anymore.

How do you handle our defense predicament?

Let me make clear I am a big Gauthier fan. But the Charlotte teams he has been on were terrific and he never was the best player on the team. In his last full year with Charlotte (2018-2019) he was the seventh leading scorer. He was scoring at a higher clip last year before his trade but there were several other teammates scoring at a similar level and he was shooting at a rate of 20%. This year's Hartford team is the best team Hartford has had in many years and Barron ranks either 1 or 2 on the team. Barron has played very well at Hartford but not dominating like I believe he can. I just think they are different players with different skills. I agree that Barron has a higher ceiling but I am concerned about his skating being good enough. But Barron has a more diverse set of skills than Gauthier.

If I had to guess, we’re not doing anything of significance at the TDL. Buch will get pushed til the draft IMO.

I wouldn't assume any of those players can play in the NHL until proven otherwise. I know some here think it's stupid, but those guys need to prove they can play at the pro level. The only one I think might have the quickest turnaround is Lundqvist.

Even with that, having Hajek, Reunanen and Smith could be useful. Also, it's never a bad thing to finally get some great players on the Wolfpack so they don't suck like they always seem to. Start building a winning culture from top to bottom. Might be nice. haha
