So we trade arguably our best forward who is a big bodies winger for Jason Demers? Like what?
Saves money, and if Klein retires (all signs pointing to it), they sign Shattenkirk as an UFA.
I'm not in love with Demers, but on the second pair with Skjei? He's fine. The alternative is playing Holden there and Staal with a rookie. The latter is worse.
That, and Nash has a big body, but it also clears enough cap to go out and make a run after somebody like say, a Brian Boyle, who wins faceoffs (arguably our second biggest weakness after RHD depth), and undoubtedly improves the bottom six.
I ran the #s. Assuming Klein does retire:
Kreider-Zibanejad-Zucc
Vesey-Stepan-Buchnevich
Miller-Hayes-Grabner
Boyle-Nieves-Fast
Puempel
McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Demers
Staal-Holden
Kampfer
Hank
Raanta/Backup
Assuming the Rangers are shopping Raanta, and they can get back a second-round pick + another minor asset for him. Rangers would then have their 21st to select from, and a second in this Draft. For everybody that complains the Rangers don't have picks? THEY FINALLY HAVE SOME! Graves/Berezgalov/Pionk would all have the opportunity to impress in camp, and I'm sure can help out in a pinch if needed. If you give market value to Zibanejad/Fast, that team is about $2.5-3 million under the salary cap. Having Staal-Holden around still stinks, but now they're undoubtedly the third best pairing on the team, and with less minutes, may be more effective.
Maybe that teams takes a small step back in GF overall. NYR have been a top 5-ish team over the last two seasons in GF overall. The offensive depth, and youth, is still there. Losing Nash stinks, but again, the alternative is infinitely worse. Having that forward depth with no top four RHD is bad. I'd take my chances. It's not like Demers is paid egregiously either. He doesn't make Brooks Orpik money, he makes Jason Garrison money. I can live with a guy like Demers overpaid by about $500k per year until his early 30s when he's closer to a guy like Marco Scandella than have Holden play as many minutes as he did last season with some skills, but admittedly, a much lower hockey IQ. Girardi was a rock. Demers has had good CF #s almost his entire career. I'll give him a pass for playing a down season on a down team.
