I agree, but you'd like to assume the team wouldn't hire him if he had no intention of changing from his LA game plan, nor would he want to sign here if that was the only way he wanted to coach and he was aware of our current roster.

I can't picture any coach taking the current squad all the way, so the coach isn't a big priority for me

Our Defense is what I could consider our biggest priority. but of course the coaching staff does come up at some point

Torts was great in the regular season as well with the level of intensity he brought to each game but that didn't prevent him from being fired.

There was obviously other behind-the scene issues. Firing Torts was not necessarily an on-ice decision.

We didn't overachieve.

Really? What were your expectations coming into the season. Winning a round in the playoffs was overachieving.

AV is under the microscope by the NY media and the fans.

Debatable. But ultimately irrelevant.

His performance in the playoffs was pathetic. We blew a series that we should have won against Ottawa. Players themselves said they knew the path to the SCF this year was the easiest and they blew it. AV's coaching was the most problematic of the playoffs.

The team certainly had a terrible series against the Sens. But doesn't that also fall on the guys who played the game on the ice?

Sure, but they should have still won that series and would have if AV wasn't throwing Marc Staal and Dan Girardi out there every 2 seconds.

The tying goal for Ottawa in game 5 epitomized that entire series, goal that goes in off of 3 bodies as Staal swan dives onto Hank.

If you think that AV bought himself a bunch of time for winning a round, I'll tell you that he lost all the good will he accomplishing that by losing a series that he had no business losing. And yes, the biggest driving force behind their losses where his personnel decisions.

Eberle for Strome isn't a small deal.

Yeah, there have been deals than usual, of course excluding all the Vegas deals. The Drouin and Eberle trades aren't minor. Mike Smith. That is about the avg amount of hockey trades you see in this league per year.

But if you ask me -- the fact that, if I remember correctly, not ONE team was able to strike a deal to improve its ED position, just show how extremely flat these guys are. McPhee said that was a very big surprise for him...

I mean... it's only June 22nd...

Maybe give Gorton some time to do his thing and see where we are in Sept? :dunno:

I can't understand how this isn't obvious. His decision making was so blatantly awful that you'd think that he had money riding on the Sens.

I've always thought tomorrow was going to be the big day because of the draft. But, then again, I thought the same thing for the NBA today, and it's been meh so far. :dunno:

He bought himself time based on his entire tenure—not just because he won a round. That he won a round is why I feel the team overachieved.

Look, I'm not really interested in defending this or that move. Doing that is talking about why he should be fired. My original point was I don't think AV is on the hot seat—which is a different conversation.

That is a lot of money tied into 1 player

Good lord

I wouldn't pay any single player anything more than $10m no matter what. But ya gotta do it.

I would've said it makes sense to trade Eberle for such a low return, but his contract runs out a the same time as McDavid's.

Not really sure what Chiarelli is up to. He always seems to lose trades, except the one where he stole Talbot from us for nothing of note. :shakehead:shakehead
