I started a thread on the main board. Nash for Demers straight up (possibly with his salary retention). Think it's an interesting proposal if anybody is bored and wants to go argue with Panthers fans.

Just to clear things up. My point was that don't expect blockbuster trades. Gorton isn't going to trade Stepan to much risk involve. Sather made moves without thinking into the next year. That thinking makes it easier to take risk.

Need to remember this isn't Sathers team anymore. Stepan isn't going anywhere.

And for the record i think Gorton is a very good GM and i have confidence in him with the roster

After losing Lindberg, I definitely don't think Stepan is going anywhere. Unless they somehow bring back an equal value center on top of other assets.

Stepan will definitely get moved before his NTC kicks in. NYR probably are waiting for Duchene to get traded so the teams that miss out are more likely to cave to NYR demands.

Losing Lindberg should have no impact on what the team does with Stepan. I'd imagine whilst they were 'taking calls' on Stepan, they were probably pretty aware that LV would select Lindberg.

Lindberg's replacement will be Boo if he can hack it, or a UFA. Or maybe even Boo if he can't hack it with growing pains.

Stepan's replacement is going to be much harder to think about.

So we trade arguably our best forward who is a big bodies winger for Jason Demers? Like what?

If the NTC is the Rangers motivation, He'll get moved before Duchene IMO.

Colorado can afford to take their time with Duchene, Stepan would have to get traded in the next week.

The other poster had the cap at $77.5 with the salaries you guessed those guys will get. You remove Klein and youre under the cap...

Honestly I ran all the numbers in my head, so I might be off but I think I had it very close. Even if you assume (generously) that I'm $1M over in my estimates for the signings, you're probably still over the cap by about a million bucks.

Not if you trade Holden.

Which there really isn't one realistically available

Rangers trading Stepan essentially need to get a young C back that can take on 3C duties, and need to hope that Zibanejad can tackle the 1C, and that Hayes's career progression turns back around so he can be the 2nd line center. It's a lot of moving pieces to deal Stepan for futures, and then turn around and try and deal another roster player for a center.

Or, you sign Gagner and pray that Zib>Hayes>Gagner>Nieves isn't the worst center-depth in the league.

Just did and if you go with:

Shatty - $6.5
Smith - $3.75
Fast - $1.8
Boyle - $2.0
Zib - $4.5

You can make the contracts fit. Talk down Boyle and/or Smith a bit to fit the ELC Pionk.

Fit by how much? It needs to be at least $750k in order to be able to reasonably operate the team. Plus you're seriously low balling Smith. He could get more on the open market, and why would Zibanejad settle for less than Kreider when he plays the more important position and has been just as productive in his career?

Shorter term, I'd assume.

Also don't think Boyle is going to settle for 2mil. Its probably going to be his last contract.

Please don't sign Boyle for $2 mil. What a waste.

Is anyone surprised? What was the incentive for the Canes to give up Faulk for Stepan?

They have some really nice future pieces. Roy, Bean, their 1st. That's a really, really strong package for a top-six center, IMO.

It doesn't make sense, especially since they're not exactly dry at center with Lindholm, Rask and J. Staal. Their defense is not good enough to just trade away Faulk for Stepan and have the team instantly prove.

Phenomenal is pushing it, he extended AV

What he did last offseason was very good though.

Again, AV's extension is meaningless. All it does is keep him from being a lame duck coach this season. If Gorton decided he wanted to fire AV today that extension wouldn't slow him down 1 second. The rangers aren't a busget team.

This is what I keep saying. It's business basics for a R I C H B O Y E club like the Rangers to extend a well respected veteran coach before he's in the final year of his contract. If anything, the two year extension with a raise on his final year of current contract instead of a 3 year extension is more telling.
