I wonder what this board would look like if Staal and Girardi are still in the lineup and getting top minutes come October.

I'd say there's more of a chance of them not being bought out

I agree with this. Just don't think the club will buy them out this season. Also don't believe that Gorton has the ability to move them this season. Not for lack of trying, just don't think he has any takers.

If they're both in the line-up in October, which I sincerely doubt, I will honestly and truly not watch this year. It's so obvious how terrible these two are and if management willfully parades them around another season I will not waste any time watching it.

I refuse to accept there are no options, that's ridiculous and an outright lie.

I think this is really simplistic and optimistic.

How so? What wore down Girardi was his style of play and the Coach he played for. Same goes for Staal.

Shattenkirk has play just about the full season every year he's been in the league sans on season where he played 56.

He isn't the physical throw your entire body in front of a shot player. His body has less mileage on it then Staal and Girardi.

History has shown players that play a style a la Girardi break down earlier in their careers then players that play like Shattenkirk.

Again this is baring him getting hurt.

Meh I've seen worse  being a Ranger fan is like being married. Think or thin we still watch.

The choices are Girardi again (nooooo), Shattenkirk, or trading a boatload of assets to get a RHD those don't come cheap..

I'll take the guy who everyone believes is willing to take less money to play here. unless Gorton can make a trade that wont kill the forward depth.

Posted on the last page. Just because Shattenkirk doesn't block a lot of shots, doesn't mean he isn't really susceptible to falling off. He has never been an elite athlete or skater. It's not just about being physically broken (G/Staal) it's about being unable to execute.

He's almost a Stepan on D. Very smart and efficient with the puck. Underrated hands. Accurate shot.

But what worries me about these types of players is that there is a slim margin for being able to execute. Great brains but lose a step and suddenly you are too slow to execute. Certainly more B Richards than D Boyle. D Boyle was a much better skater, athlete, and had fresher legs.

Girardi was just never good to begin with, and Staal had a concussion and horrific eye injury. I don't think it's a good comparison at all

Come on, that's just not true about Girardi. Maybe the comparisons aren't good but this board needs to stop the revisionist history with certain players.

Only reason they are being compared to a Shattenkirk signing is that people on here are saying "oh well we gave Staal and Girardi long contracts that need to be bought out any other player we sign thats 27/28 years old will have the same result!"

That is the reason for my comparison. Also saying Girardi was not good is just insanity.

what exactly do you mean by not an elite athlete?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply your comparison was bad, I phrased that poorly. I just wanted to say that someone can agree or disagree with the comparison but let's not trivialize how well these guys played. Girardi was a legit shut down defender that went toe to toe with the likes of Ovechkin and Crosby. That's an accomplishment.

I see we're back on the "Girardi used to be good" fever dream - something that has been disproved as much as the Earth being flat.

197 defensemen played 2,500 minutes from 2007-2012, HF's fabled "prime years"

Among them, Girardi ranks 162nd in goals against. Some of the players more efficient include Hall of Famers such as: Roman Polak, Jason Strudwick, Steve Eminger, Adam Pardy, Matt Hunwick, Cam Barker, and Aaron Ward.

But you're forgetting about his All Star Game participation and Ovechkin's overall struggles in the playoffs against us.

Girardi was never good?:laugh::laugh:. Come on already. My God. The hate towards him anyway is so played out it is incredible. Go throw yourselves in front of 5 shots and see how you feel let alone 200+ a season for a tyrant head coach for 4 years.

Is that even strength minutes or mix special teams and even strength. That information be important to form an opinion.

Players who played more pk minutes could have their numbers adversly effected.

He ranked 140th in shots on goal against, so obviously his "muh warrior" shot blocking was extremely effective.
