Really no need to. If they have a trade lined up, probably need to buyout G/Staal anyway. Not like we really hurt having to protect them anyway.

Deadline for the next set of news is noon eastern Thursday.

Oh I know protecting them doesn't hurt.

But I'm just assuming since we haven't heard anything by the deadline to ask, I'm operating under the assumption that they officially didn't ask.

Granted, our beat writers do take a while to report anything...

I'm making the same assumption with the Ducks and Bieksa, so it'd be unfair if I didn't do it for our guys, too

Not saying he was the biggest reason why they won, but you can't take that away from him. He did it...twice.

Nobody complained when Sather told him to pack his bags. Nobody said it was a bad decision. But now, when he has won 2 Cups by coaching a team that has Malkin, Crosby, Kessel, and Murray in net, it's all of a sudden a bad move?

I am happy for Sullivan that he has won some Cups but letting him go was the right decision.

Yup, I went back through this board about 6 weeks ago looking for stuff about Lavi after some conversation about whether we should have looked at him after canning Torts, and I found a thread about who our next coach should be. Someone mentioned Sully as a joke and it got a few jokes and "god no, you think the PP sucks now" but no-one thought it was a good idea. A few people mentioned Lavi but the thought he was all offence and couldn't coach the defensive system needed to get near a cup. There was also a lot of talk about AV, and quite a few Nucks fans chiming in about him playing favourites and not adjusting in-game :)
The coach who seemed to get the most support was Dallas Eakin...

Very interesting chart. Question for people here. Would you rather have the Rangers last 12 years since the first lockout (make the playoffs 11/12 years, some long playoff runs, but no cup) or the Hurricanes (playoffs 2/12 years, lot of terrible years, but 1 cup)?

Cup AINEC.

So nothing has happened all day? Seems like another dud where the pundits said lots was going to happen...

I think there's going to be some activity prior to the expansion draft, but it probably won't be until Thursday or Friday at the earliest. The league wants this to be a big unveiling in conjunction with the awards show, so I'm sure they're going to try and keep a lid on stuff. Just rumors and speculation until then.

Man sather left Gorton with a pure mess. The Staal dead cap penalty would be horrendous and for 8 damn years. Nearly a decade. I wasn't for packaging a first with Staal to ship him out but that seems like the right decision to make but that may be even hard to do with staal having a ntc clause right? I mean was it necessary to hand out ntc like candy to these guys?
Then obviously buy out Girardi which would be a 6 year cap hit.
Still most likely one of them is still here next year and possibly beyond.

I remember it differently, frankly. There was no reason to fire Torts and Sullivan when Sather did. None. The AV hiring was, at best, a lateral move. I wanted to give both another year or two.

I'm not sure why anyone expected today to be a big day of activity. He same principle that applied yesterday applies today. The league wants the Final to be the big story of the day.

Except for the fact that the players clearly weren't into playing for Tortorella anymore. The decision was made after conversations with the players during exit interviews.

Its funny cause every off season people point to the cup winner and want to re do the team they root for.

Nashville has 4 top defensemen.

Ottawa has one elite defensemen.

if either of these teams won people would be pointing to these things and complaining how the rangers don't have 4 top defensemen etc.

I remember that part. I remember that there were rumors of Lundqvist being the key decision to letting Torts go.

But I honestly don't remember as much discordance in the Torts era than I do under AV

Phhbt let's not forget Vancouver, his first dud season in CBJ, and his almost every dud postseason appearance with us. Oh and worlds this year. Lol that

Just so everyone is on the same page, 5/18 won't be bought out until after the expansion draft.

Assuming A) either is being bought out at all and B) they're on the protection list come that deadline.

So don't be disappointed when Thursday happens and they're still on the team.

But seriously how does this team buy out 18 and suffer a cap hit for 8 years?
I would be shocked if they did.

Buyouts are dead cap space. They really are the last resort. Especially just doing it to free up room for another contract (Shatty) that will also end up needing a buyout halfway through its term.

Girardi will likely be the one traded post July 1, I still think they buyout Staal.

Not shocked at all either weren't asked to waive. There was no threat to lose a good Dman if they didn't.
