Buyouts are dead cap space. They really are the last resort. Especially just doing it to free up room for another contract (Shatty) that will also end up needing a buyout halfway through its term.

Shattenkirk doesn't play the physical game Staal and Girardi do. Hasn't had the injuries Staal has had either.

Comparing them to Shattenkirk is comparing Apple's to oranges.

Looking at what we're left with a Staal buyout, I don't know why we'd even bother. I think we trade him (and necessarily ask him to waive) or he's here. Girardi might be bought out.

Girardi bought out or traded with retention and assets.

Staal in the opening night lineup.

Management has long leaned toward buying out Girardi instead of Staal. They and the coaching staff were aware of Girardi's decline. Vigneault's "plan" to rest Girardi throughout the season said as much. Gorton likely was bracing for this summer and the expansion draft and take off another year of Girardi's contract before buying him out. Hard to see them switch foot and buyout Staal instead now considering Staal's contract is where Girardi's was last year and management held their ground last summer on Girardi.

Unfortunately, I don't see Staal going anywhere either.

On top of the fact that Girardi and Staal without being bought out is dead cap space. You can buy both out, replace them with a $1.5M third pairing guy for the next 8 years and still come out with more cap space and on ice performance.

I wonder if there's a team out there who would take Girardi at 50%. We trade Girardi+ to Vegas, and they eat half his cap hit and trade him, or buy him out.

playing around with the numbers after we re sign zib and sign smith we have no money left and that with buying out G....

I don't understand how you guys think we can also bring in Shatty unless we move Staal or nash/Steph trade

I'm not comparing them in terms of play style. Shattenkirk is what 28? So at or nearing the end of his prime as a player. So what are we buying in Shattenkirk? I would say most likely a declining asset. So couple that with 6 years of dead cap space from Danny G. And you have now just crippled the franchise and we will end up having to let guys like JT Miller and Buch go down the road because we won't have the cap for them. Similar to what happened with the Blackhawks.

Shattenkirk can skate, and hasn't blocked shots for his whole career, He isn't going to decline at 33-34 the way Girardi and Staal have, they could never skate and the injuries made them even slower.

Same thing was said literally word for word last summer too

And no changes were made and the issues were glaring in the playoffs.

And the Rangers don't have a Skjei like young player coming up in the system like they did this year.

What's the old saying? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

Players of Shattenkirks ilk play at a high level into their 30s baring injury. This isn't a player who played for Torts and threw himself at shot after shot like Staal and Girardi did.

When's the tradesplosion happening? This is getting boring already. When can we expect Girardi and Staal to be dumped off on other stupid GMs?

Zibanejad is a RFA probably will get a bridge deal.. Also, if the Rangers get Shattenkirk there not going to sign Smith too

Staal is the more difficult player to move. Longer contract.

I still think Girardi is moved this summer. A portion of his contract will be kept. There are other teams with bad contracts. I've mentioned Buffalo and Moulson. He would seem to be the type of guy I'd take back for either Staal or Girardi. Shorter contract. Can be stashed on the 4th line.

Oh I agree with you 100% but I wouldn't hold my breath. Despite what seems obvious to everyone here I don't think the Rangers believe either is a problem

I wonder what this board would look like if Staal and Girardi are still in the lineup and getting top minutes come October.

I'd say there's more of a chance of them not being bought out

While annoyed, I could just about stand it if we changed away from our man-on-man coverage to at least lessen the impact of some of their deficiencies.
It's one thing to have to play S/G, it's another to overplay them in a system that doesn't help them at all.

Can he though? He has never been known as a great skater. And he's not some physical specimen either.

He's almost a Stepan on D. Very smart and efficient with the puck. Underrated hands. Accurate shot.

But what worries me about these types of players is that there is a slim margin for being able to execute. Great brains but lose a step and suddenly you are too slow to execute. Certainly more B Richards than D Boyle. D Boyle was a much better skater, athlete, and had fresher legs.
