Post-Game Talk: Rangers @ Toronto

The horrific showing by MDZ overshadowed a lot of good offensive chances that they just didn't bury. A number of uncalled penalties on Toronto as well IMO.

Oh well, didn't expect them to sweep this series, but really need the thursday game now.

Leaf fan from Jersey coming in peace here.... I just need to get this off my chest... Nash is freaking unbelievable. He never gave up tonight and he really proved himself as a league leader when it comes to heart and perseverance under fire. You guys were always my favorite team from the Tri-State area, and I know that Wednesday's game in MSG will look much different than tonight's. Good luck boys.

Good game guys, it was a very exciting game with both teams spending extended periods either being hemmed in or hemming the other team in. Rick Nash was absolutely unstoppable. Derek Stepan looked like a beaut tonight too.

One note: I'm a little confused as to why Derek Brassard only logged 10:42 mins of ice time tonight.

I think you guys will win on Wednesday night. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been firing on all cylinders lately but I feel like you guys also share our strengths (hitting, blocking shots) but simply do them better.

Should be fun seeing you at MSG.

Same reason MDZ and Girardi got 25 minutes of ice team despite being absolutely atrocious; Torts is mentally handicapped. But really, he was just riding his offensive horses and it worked for the most part. Too bad he rode the wrong defensive horses.

Good luck to you the rest of the way, except on Wednesday of course ;)

I have calmed down. It's unusual to see a high scoring* game like this where we get the goals we need (rare) and then gets scored on with a 4th goal with Henrik in net (rare). It's hard to know how to feel. It's like getting pregnant and then having a miscarriage. There are some people that put way too much into losses and wins as far as the course of a day is concerned and unfortunately, I am one of those.

MDZ with an uncharacteristically different game. How can one go from being so sound position wise and shut down wise to a debacle where he was doing something wrong each and every time he was on the ice and in our defensive zone with the opposition piling on? It's a serious mental failure on his part.

We played this game like Tampa Bay and boy, as much as we ***** about Torts having a defensive system where the offense is rare and far in between, I can't imagine watching games with swings back and forth and the last team to put the puck in wins type of a deal. 2 game with bad defense and we walked away with 2 points. Would have liked at least 3 especially with the brilliant efforts of Nash and Stepan tonight but that's the way cakes are dropped sometimes. With a couple of games now where we've been successful offensively with Nash playing well, 4-6-1-3 and scoring in rapid succession, I think the team is getting away from getting the puck out of our zone is sound fashion before moving the play up ice. We need to control the neutral zone board play as well as making sure we keep the puck to the outside. We're letting them get into play making areas way to easily. You add that onto the fact that 1 of 2 D man is out of position, we're going to get screwed every time. We're eager to forecheck tonight and I think that was Torts' message coming out. play hard and forecheck and make them turn the puck over. They forechecked fine but they relinquished a defensive mind set at some point. McDonagh has jumped up into the play more often in these past few games, Girardi is regressing, Del Zotto is just trying to do something I can't understand. D man need to stay at home. I think somewhere in that locker room there's a message about our D man helping the offense by outletting passes and it's affecting our overall defensive game. We need Staal back, man.

When it comes to the final stretch to make a playoff spot, and you know you have to win a good amount of games to do so, you simply HAVE to take games like these. Now, I know you can't win them all, but to lose in the fashion they did today with the D getting beat just about every rush in our zone, tying it up and letting them get the momentum back to take the game winning lead, that was just absolutely atrocious. It's a team sport, you can't rely all on offense, and when you let what you just let happen tonight happen, in a final stretch playoff push, you just don't deserve that spot.

I blame the D, and Torts for being too much of an idiot to not know how to adjust and what not. He just gets out coached all the time. Just a little blame goes to the offense. They scored a good amount, but missed a hell of a lot of chances.

Here's to hoping they get it ALL together and play like they deserve to get a playoff spot.

I'm really not sure why Henrik played tonight. Marty plays well against the leafs especially in TOR. Henrik was flat out exhausted like I've never seen before after the game against Carolina. With the travelling and the lack of rest between the home and home, you'd think Henrik plays one of the two while Marty grabs the other. Henrik has played so many in a row + his tiring effort in Carolina... not sure why he played tonight. Woke up expecting Marty to play.

Doesn't help that the D left him out to dry

2 games in a row now

Doesn't really matter since he was clearly off. There was no real reason to start him tonight after all the work he has had in his last three games. He needed a day off. It was clear as day that he was a step behind the whole night. Hopefully Torts gives him a game to rest.

Give him off the Wednesday Leafs game and he can rest until Saturday. That should be great for him.

I don't know how soon Torts is gonna rest him but I think Marty should definitely play against Florida and Buffalo next week (unless we're really tight for points)

I'm reposting this from the Torts thread:

I'm very skeptical of Tortorella leading this team to a championship. Obviously, I don't think much will happen this year. But, even looking towards next season-I see the same systemic problems night in night out(irregardless if the players are playing well or not).

Tonight, the Rangers(AGAIN)struggled mightily on the breakout/transition. Torts NEVER makes adjustments when the opposing team is stacking the wall in the D zone(which is the blueprint to beat the Rangers). Rangers were forcing plays all night along the board. Toronto was either outnumbering the Rangers along the wall or intercepting hard arounds on the far side blue line.

This has happened time and time and time again. We end up forcing so many plays along the wall in the D zone that the Rangers are exhausted from grinding by the time they get the play up ice. Toronto was giving the Rangers the middle of the ice on the transition. Yet, the blue shirts never utilized it at all(to a man).

We also do nonsensical stuff like stretch pass tip ins which just willingly gives up the puck to the opposing team.

There is also significant issues with overusing the collapsing zone defense; plus an offensive zone scheme with too much wall support down low. But, those are not the main issues with our teams struggles. The transition/breakout is.

This was a problem in '11. It was a problem in '12. It is still a problem in '13. If Torts continues on forcing his nonsensical transition game(which was a BIG reason he was axed from Tampa): the Rangers will NEVER win a cup with him at the helm.

Tonight, the game was not a player effort issue or that the players were soft. That is silly. This was a game where the team needed tactical answers and never got them.

I hate to admit this but there is a part of me that wants to miss the playoffs so that Torts can be on the hot seat. Sather, went out of his way to get the players for Torts to work his "system." I really hope that he makes Sather look foolish. I really hope Sather wises up and brings in a better coach.

I'll be as gentle as I can...

Michael "Wide!" Del Zaster is an idiot. He's young, but he's also an idiot. He's a supposed NHL defenseman who still doesn't even know hockey fundamentals and cannot be trusted with or without the puck. He cannot play 25 minutes a night by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sick and tired of his idiotic decisions all over the ice and his useless shot that makes up for nothing. I wouldn't exactly cry if he was traded, I have a feeling alot of GMs believe he's better than he actually is. Either that or cement him on the 3rd pairing.

And yes, Torts and Sullivan. We should've lost against Ottawa in the 1st round like this team deserved, now we're stuck with these marine drill sergeants forever and they actually believe this useless crap hockey actually works. That overperforming season last year was poisoned. They have no clue how to use a roster and when they try to make a PP better, they make things worse.

Boyle is playing 30 minutes a night as usual and effectively kills any offensive scoring depth that we traded Gaborik to get. Brassard gets buried on the 4th line with talents such as Powe and Pyatt, while Boyle single handedly kills any production from the 3rd.

Our PP gets red hot, so what does the incompetent idiots on the bench do? They have a bunch of interesting pointmen to choose from, such as Richards, Zuccarello, Brassard or Strålman. Who do they choose? They put DAN FRIGGING GIRARDI on the point. One of the worst breakout passers in the league and a terrible puckhandler overall, who unpressured fails to make a 5 foot pass to an open teammate. Then they put Michael "Wide!" Del Zaster out there so he can wear down the glass with his manure gun of a shot. Until they take their job seriously, I can't take this team seriously.

I was kind of laughing that we played one of our best games when we had a couple of new guys who hadn't been taught how to kill hockey by Torts yet. Now they're being grinded into the system and you can see their life being drained from their eyes on a game to game basis.

There must be a 100 coaches on this planet who would get more out of this roster, but now we're stuck with these idiots for eternity. It's sickening and I'm sick of it.

Said this in the game thread and i'll repeat it here.

GIGANTIC 2 points lost tonight. This was a must win game 100%. Kiss any shot at 5th goodbye and you just gave the Sens some more life to hold on to their position. Not good enough tonight. They have turned no corner yet.

Losing on the road to a talented team is nothing close to a gigantic loss.

Where you finish in the standings is fairly meaningless unless you miss the playoffs.

Every time the Rangers lose a game someone acts like the season is over.

To be fair, we are running out of games here. It's better to be in the driver's seat with regards to your own destiny than having to rely on the scoreboard for other teams. Always nice to have a little cushion against the other teams.

No, this doesn't mean all hope is lost. There were just too many brainfarts on D this one game that a lot of people felt disgruntled. Also didn't help that Lundqvist seemed human at times. I'm not saying all those goals were his fault but he sure seemed beat on a lot of shots. Guy needs to take a breather.

Still, after all is said and done, I still liked that we came clawing back. Earlier in this season, down a goal (Forget about 2) and this team rarely showed any fight and it was practically game over. I still don't like that Nash and Stepan have to carry most of the weight on offense.

I was to pissed (and tired) to post anything constructive after the game.
I do agree with most of you guys that MDZ and Girardi ****ed us over.
Hank looked tired but the goals were the result of the d-core ******** all over him!

On a positive note, Nash looked beastly and Stepan continues his amazing play :handclap:

Nash
Step
Zucc

HM:Moore (needs more ice time, looks like Mcdonagh lite out there)

Wow these terrible Leafs fans how dare they come to an opposing team's board and dole out compliments like there's no tomorrow? Trolls! :sarcasm:

As far as the game goes... I'm known as the biggest Lundqvist hater on this board and usually trash him for every soft goal. Still I don't get it why everyone thought this was some travesty of a game by him. 3 of the goals weren't his fault and the D completely left him out to dry. He made some nice saves too. That 3rd goal grinds my gears though.

Should have gotten at least 1 point from last night. It was poor defensive coverage that ultimately buried us. Hank looks like he could use a rest, too.

Be careful what you wish for.

The 5th seed means Boston in the 1st round. I have a hard time seeing that team lose in the 1st round two years in a row.

The goal should be the 6th seed. They'll get Winnipeg or Washington.

The Devils were the 6th seed and went to the SCF. I could see the Rangers do the same, especially if the Habs or Pens get upset int he 1st round.

Rangers suck in Canada, I want no part of Winnipeg
