Zib and Panaran didn't show up. Panaran actually got pushed around.

Georgiev should be playing a sport less reliant on reflexes. He needs to be anywhere else but in a net where the Rangers are playing hockey.

Whomever decided the penalty kill needs to maintain a perfect square at all times needs to go wherever we send Georgiev.

Miller was terrible. I'm not sure he's earned a spot on the second pairing...or maybe in the nhl at all. That needs to be watched and addressed soon if it doesn't improve.

Laf was too invisible to be assigned a bad adjective like terrible. I agree with the Krav move...but we might need to be consistent here with Laf. My lines tomorrow would be:

Kreider Zib Kakko
Panaran Strome Blais
Laf Chytil Goodrow
Hunt Rooney Reaves

Kakko has earned his top six minutes and this fixes the Kreider at right wing deal. Blais might have been our best forward tonight. He balances that line and will deter runs at Panaran. In my opinion these two things need to happen. Last stop before Hartford deal for Laf.

Nils and/or Jones should be playing on D.

We are in the upside down, we are now what the New York Islanders were, just parody after parody that writes itself.

I miss the Callahan, Girardi, Dubinsky days. At last those mother f***ers could leave their hearts on the ice and still be good hockey players. These guys cant hold a candle to the last generation. We truly were spoiled.

How does a new coach who doesn't know the old coach do the exact same things? It's like a head coaching trope: ride your "best" players when times are tough. What blows my mind is PP1 was the same 4 right handed shots. Gallant doesn't know Quinn yet went to the same well.

The only thing that worked for the kids was putting them together. They don't work well with the vets.

Every single coach on the planet would employ the same top PP unit, have Fox with Lindgren and have Panarin with Strome. Everything else is the coach's discretion.

If they want to commit to playing Miller with the big club then they need to at least demote him to the third pairing and shelter him a bit. Hopefully he can find some confidence that way. Just move Nemeth up with Trouba. He can't be any worse than Miller has been in the last 30ish games. If Miller still struggles they gotta send him to Hartford.

Our forward lines are a mess. Gallant needs to show that he has the balls to break up the little cliques these guys on the top lines have formed because they go invisible way too often.

This is a huge concern and why I really was opposed to signing him long term. I just don't believe in paying that much money to a guy who is supposed to be a #1 center but can't push play in a positive direction.

Missed the preseason and this is the first game I saw and I know this is the first game of the season, but nothing has changed from last season:

TOP6:

  • Mika: Should be 2C, cant make his wingers better and drive his own line.
  • Strome: If we would have true 1C, he wouldnt be in the team.
  • Kreider: His offense is not enough to be 1st line winger.
  • Panarin: Only elite foward in the team.
  • Kakko: Yeah his better than last season, but its time to perform. Cant make excuses anymore.
  • Laf: Only his second season, but to be honest it doesnt look good at the moment.
Lot of potential in that TOP6, but in my opinion overrated af. I miss Buchnevich :(.

Coach Jovo would roll with

Panarin - Zibanejad - Kakko
Fox - Kravtsov

and we would be miles better!

No wonder you're a big Jovo guy coach Jovo cause your a strange cat.

Most posters on this board blend together but you're starting to get into that rarified territory of standing out above the fray like Bern with his wacky roster building or Kreiderbro with his stalking.

My thoughts:

1. This is a good example of what wins/loses a hockey game in this league. An unnecessary slashing penalty by Nemeth gives Caps a good shot at jumping ahead to 1-0. Look at the odds, a big chunk of the war is won by the teams that scores first/lost by the team that gives up the first goal. There are some penalties both ways in a hockey game. But at that point of the game, like the players shouldn’t take any penalties and that is a fierce slash by Nemeth.

After that we give up 2-0 that is waived off, and it’s caused by Barclay Goodrow taking a run at a Caps D instead of staying back as the 3rd guy. That would have been game-over (like what 95% of the time? Down 2-0 on away ice).

I am not much for cliches, but the saying ‘it’s hard to win a hockey game but easy to lose it’ stays true. It’s gonna take some magic for us to win the game the first 10 minutes, but we came close to giving it away.

2. Why do I bring this up? This is where GG has his work cut out for him.

Like once it’s 3-0, is it odd that things starts to fall apart? Tampa gave up 6 to Pittsburgh the other night. It’s Trouba here and Miller there, Ziba/Strome/the 4th, it’s Georgiev. I firmly believe that the problem with this team is the opposite of being individual, we don’t have a winning identity on a collective level.

When you don’t have that, individuals will be exposed. It’s as simple as that. The play of 3-4 players on our roster did not cost us this game. It has nothing to do with that. Nothing. You are 6 guys on the ice to start with. From their it’s about rigging the odds in your favor.

Mistakes will happen both ways but (a) we weren’t disciplined on away ice for the season opener against a veteran team and (b) we didn’t pay much attention to not giving up odd man rushes on away ice for the season opener against a veteran team.

We perhaps didn’t do much of (c), which is giving up counter attacks due to forcing high risk plays when the odds don’t make it worth it, which has cost us a ton go games the last 2 years. So that is always something.

3. Caps back down and take away time and space infront of their net. When you are gift wrapped a lead that is easy to do, and very hard to penetrate. We shouldn’t make too big of a deal of us missing an edge in that sense.

BUT, if we look at the chances we did create, it’s so obvious that against a team playing like this, you need an offensive punch from the blue line to open things up. We only really have that when Fox is out there.

4: Overall, on an individual level, I liked what I saw. I thought Miller and Trouba especially had some effective shifts taking away ice and moving the puck.

5. Panarin looks out of shape.

6. On the PK, we try to ace it. We were just overly ambitious. Nothing wrong with trying, but the Caps are so experienced and poised on the PP even without 19. When we can’t pressure them, you need to cut your losses and shrink around the net more.

I mean they could have just used the 2nd pic for the offseason too.
And this one should have been used as the 2nd pic

He’s more steady and cool under pressure than flashy. Don’t get me wrong he’s better than Pettersson or Hughes, but I wish Laf & Kakko played more like finesse guys than just boring solid mistake free hockey
Yeah well, playing with finesse instead of solid, mistake free hockey got those kids benched under the previous coach. So no wonder if they are not yet over it.

these should be the lines. Kreider doesn’t deserve first line min but both Laf and him looked lost last night. I don’t see any chemistry with Laf and zibby or maybe Laf just sucks and I don’t think that’s the case.
Also Not blaming Kakko at all but he won’t last on the Strome line. They need someone like a Blais on that line.
Would hope maybe Chytil and Laf can find some chemistry

not seeing game but tiresome score at scoreboards jumbotrone this morning from here. Dude, i think NHL headquarters need stopping giving this wahington PP after PP. my feeling is this organisations like respiration stylee forcing oveckin towards new goals. also at opponent very tiresome they let him stand like 3 M from goal at PP occations. and shoot after shoot. this man is old. time for washington to let new players play and from NHL headquarters to stop giving this man free lane.

what does ny rangers do? better rosters and they not doing things right here. kakko at 17 min and 2? PP minits. oveckin like 10 average min PP per games? put kakko at 35 min per game for half season and see if he rises. musselated or weightincreased? he needs to put up massive amount of points nowon and he must have freedom with massive amount of icetimes. Dude, i m not a fan of Lafresque, never was sos. he like small , faststepping grinder. thats about it.

i note edmonton game. macdavids 25 min. german player 25 min. i have feeling they was only playd little this game to start season with. at vancouver sweden player also 25 min.

hello ny rangers? time to set feet at fire. ps not was never fan of miller or trouba also or strome or kreider. dont remember which was who

Tinordi. LOL

Georgiev. LOL

Miller. LOL

Strome. LOL

Strome will get better after 10 games probably. The other three should not even be on an NHL team.

Luckily we have a great GM who surely will find a way to figure this out. Oh, wait...
