I do think this team goes nowhere without better goaltending.

Let's not forget he also let in a shot from near the blue line that was waived off due to offsides. Back when the team had 3 goalies, he played his best hockey to stay in the lineup. But now, he's simply not as good anymore.

I wonder if part of having Geo start was to take a good look at him in live conditions. Turk said the team has two great goalies but there has to be question marks about Georgiev's future.

I know Gallant covered for Georgiev after the game and he made a few saves to keep them in it, but the game started to shift when he refused to cover the puck with Hagelin coming in on him, forcing Nemeth to take a penalty, then giving up the first goal on the PP. He has the worst situational awareness of any goalie I've ever seen, whenever the Rangers need a big save, he comes up small. It killed all the momentum they had in the 1st 10 minutes

He better get it together quickly because they have his replacement ready to step in and he's running out of rope.
100 percent correct. Also everytime he and one of his dmen go behind the net its a freaking adventure. and that is usually with no opposition near.

It's only the first game so I'm not going to join in with the overreactions. I also wasn't very optimistic about this team before yesterday so maybe that's the difference.

Was there any explanation as to why Georgiev got the start?

Laf-zib-kakko
Panarin-Strome-Blais
Kreider-Chytil-gauthier
Goodrow-Rooney-Reaves

Blais fits like a glove on that line. He’s a Banger, puck retriever, and offense doesn’t die on his stick. That’s all that line needs in a right winger, and it allows us to spread talent more evenly throughout the lineup. He also was one of our best players last night and all preseason. He should be rewarded.

Kreider-chytil-Gauthier could be matchup hell for other teams. All 3 players are big, fast, and competent offensively.

I actually really like those lines.

We brought in grit and toughness to compliment the skill in the lineup, and open up some space. The grit was a little "meh" though improved I'd say, but the high end skill was totally absent. They weren't bullied into submission, they just didn't show up.

This confirmed what we already have known about this team for a long time, we live and die by the performance of the high end talent. We're going to win very very few games on the back of the 3rd and 4th lines or backup goalie.

I'm waiting for the Quinn "we feel like we have a 1A, 1B goalie situation and they will get a 50/50 split" as if we are all blind.

Like I said, not totally his fault, but he sure did his best to make it difficult to win the game.

If they scored on one of those glorious chances in the first, maybe it is a different game. The stop on Kakko after going down 1-0 was for all purposes, the biggest save of the game.

First game was whatever, and Laviolette sheltering Wilson from Reaves deflated any anticipation of retribution for last year- brilliant by him, stupid by us to use that as the main motivator going into game 1.

That being said, here are my two big picture takeaways:

1) D zone coverage on drop passes and switches needs to be better. It’ll improve in time, but the Caps used this a lot against us to pull a defender out of their zone and have a trailer fill soft spaces on the ice. Needs to be cleaned up soon hopefully.

2) Some of the 5v5 breakouts were really promising last night, and I was impressed at how much faster they played as a team at points. Hope they can continue to improve on that.

This is why Georgiev being leaky and prone to stoppable goals against too often is such a problem for a team trying to win. We're carrying play and looking good and then they score and then they score again shortly after and even though it got waived off, it took any wind we had behind us right out of our sails. Then he gives up 2 in 24 seconds because he's a mental midget and the game is over.

The totality of the game by the Rangers wasn't good, but the first period was and we still come out trailing. Maybe Igor doesn't change the result but if we get out of that first period tied then it's a different game. Goalies giving up stoppable goals early in games leads to momentum swings, not to mention his atrocious rebound control and him being prone to scrambling. Every shot makes you clench your butt and hold your breath because he's all over the place.

No wonder you're a big Jovo guy coach Jovo cause your a strange cat.

Most posters on this board blend together but you're starting to get into that rarified territory of standing out above the fray like Bern with his wacky roster building or Kreiderbro with his stalking.
Speaking of which, has Bern been supervised since the infamous Krav pivot to center is gone? I fear for his safety

1) Considering the logjam with talent at defense, seeing that third pairing on opening night is vomit inducing.
2) Miller and Trouba need to step up their game. I've also questioned Kreider, when he's off he's useless.
3) The cursing at Georgiev is exaggerated. Yes, he had a bad game but it wasn't like he got much help from his teammates. The amount of shots wasn't high but the number of dangerous chances he faced was unacceptable. The defensive structure on the team has to settle in, otherwise Shetyerkin will allow alot of goals as well.

Kreider’s time in the top 6 needs to end. I have no idea why Mika wants to play with him. Kreider is an elite grinder and a great PP net front presence. He is utterly useless in transition (other than full steam ahead puck transport) and when trying to pass the puck around in the offensive zone.

The guy needs to be playing crash line hockey with players who have no interest other than getting the puck to the net. He is well suited to a very simple, north south game, and will continue to drag down skilled players if we force feed him into their lines.

This is as clear as day to me.

To me G looked shaky(even throughout the preseason) out of position a lot. I’m not sure if it’s a lack of confidence in himself or the d but this is not the same goalie that took over for Hank when he was injured. Tindori should never see the lineup again. Goodrow was meh, I actually would’ve liked him to be the 4th line c over Rooney and have run blais-chytil-krav/gauthier. Can we just move kakko to stromes spot on the pp? Sure they got 1 ppg but they looked awful all game.

Yeah, he looks, I don’t know, spent.

What bothered me is that they didn’t utilize the preseason enough. This is the first game with the full line up. The lines should have gotten more gametime together.

hopefully can stay at 500 hockey up to game 20. Hopefully that’s where things start clicking…. I miss Jacques Martin

Georgiev starting- big L
Strome on the right and our PP - big L
PK - big L
Tinordi over Lundkvist - big L

these things are fixable

yea no reason to sound the alarm just yet.
I’ll tell you what really pissed be off and everyone probably saw it, but when LaF had the puck right at the side of the net with a free 3 steps of open ice...., he waits to try to pass. He’s gotta be more hungry to score.
If anyone gives him any kind of room like that around the net or by the circles, he gota either shoot or drive to the rack.
I hope it’s not a confidence thing, or a try to defer to Zibby/kreider thing.
He’s our stud, with the supposably cocky attitude... he better start acting like he’s got the big swinging Di*k on the ice then.
You can see when panarin gets an opportunity to shoot in a scoring area like that, the pass isn’t even an option. That’s exactly how LaF should be

That was the worst television coverage ever, capped by Gretzky droning on about Ovie amid the game's most interesting flurry of scoring. Maybe the next time TNT broadcasts the Rangers they can have a sleepy bureaucrat in the split screen reading the NHL's Covid policy for each city and arena.

When I go to purgatory they're gonna put me in a room with a TV and that four minutes of The Great One mumbling over the Rangers getting trashed by the Caps will play over and over, on a continuous loop, until I've done my time. Only then will Marcel Dionne put on his Capitals hat and they'll let me out.

What a cluster F.

It's a good point, we brought some of these guys in for a reason and played Tinordi for a reason. We should have sent a message, it didn't have to be a line brawl but just hey Tom Wilson here is a guy we brought in to punch you in the face and we'll do it at every opportunity.
Hey, but at least Reaves and Ovie are on good terms.

Not for nothing the Rangers punished caps all over the ice first period and Wilson played the quietest game I’ve seen him play.

that was the idea. If someone acts up we’re ready for it. But if anything our guys were out for blood and caps did nothing about it other than beat up on Georgiev
