This offseason they went two steps forward, one step back.

No they didn’t. Buyouts are stupid but how is getting rid of a dman that no one wanted and taking a cap hit in a year you won’t need the $$ taking a step back.

This offseason we took 10 steps forward and then stubbed our toe tripping over the curb heading into the club to celebrate

Easier--if possible. I mean if he was horrible all year, to move him out next year we'd still probably have to attach an asset to get him off the books. You're definitely right; one year would always be easier than two. I'm just not sure he'll ever get back to a level where he's a desirable player. I'm sure someone will give him a small contract now, but that's different than trading assets for him.
One year and it's only $2 million owed after his bonus. He'll almost definitely have Ottawa on his no trade list, but I'm sure there will be some team where the dollar value is significant.

Shattenkirk is just plain overweight for the NHL/for the type of game he plays. Staal has a brain damage. One of those is in the player's control, the other is not. Staal still gives good effort and overcomes his issues to play NHL hockey. Shattenkirk is on cruise control.

Staal wore out after 40 games, shattenkirk didn’t.

Who is out of shape again?

The Zucc trade was atrocious. People just let it slide because they were still buzzed from Kakko and Panarin.

We were 1 goal away from a 1st and 3rd. And Dallas actively wanted to sign him too. This is nonsense. Yeah in hindsight it wasn't great but that was the risk involved. The trade was supposed to be a good chance at one 1st rounder and a 2nd or 3rd (maybe even two 1st rounders), it was a gamble that didn't work out, but it was very close to working out. Calling it atrocious after the fact is ridiculous.

Unless you're Toronto. Or Tampa. Then they'll line up to help you out.
Is it possible that with someone like Namestnikov, or even Kreider, the offers sucked? And that Gorton thought he would be better off exercising a buyout of Shattenkirk and hopefully getting more value for those other two guys at the deadline?

Likewise, rather than attaching a pick and eating money to move out Smith (and still not clearing enough room), he decides to move Shattenkirk and ride it out with burying Smith?

I mean there are legitimate reasons (even if they're theoretical, we don't know) to go this route rather than pursuing the other avenues. I can understand not liking this option, but some of you guys are making it sound like out and out negligence.

Buy out Shattenkirk frees up cap and cements Trouba/TDA in the 1/2 RD spot.

Smith can fill in until Fox proves otherwise. Having Shattenkirk on the roster muddles that situation and there is no moving him after this buy-out period passes. They have optioins with Smith at forward, AHL, or in the press box.

If Staal is LITR eligible, that is a path management crosses during preseason.

Buying out Shattenkirk was the only move to make the Rangers cap compliant without going through so many convoluted hypothetical moves.

The trade market is stagnant. The Rangers can move Kreider and Namestnikov before the February 24th trading deadline.

Deangelo and Lemieux play for their $874,125 one year qualifying offers. They solid seasons and file for salary arbitration next summer.

If Fox needs time in the AHL, Smith slides over the right side.

Shattenkirk was a disaster and a mistake. He reported to his first Rangers training camp out of shape and he proceeded to hurt his knee. Shattenkirk received a cortisone shot at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection in his knee in January 2017 before the Rangers shut him down that season. That knee surgery was far more serious than the Rangers reported. Shattenkirk tried to come back that season and the Rangers told him to shut it down again. He didn't start skating again until June of that year. The Rangers said Shattenkirk would miss 4-6 weeks and it became 5 months before he could skate without any pain.

It was all down hill from there.

Once again heed what @nyr2k2 , @GAGLine and @Trxjw post. (Edit: and @RangerBoy )

How Shattenkirk was supposed to rebuild his value if it’s primarily relate to PP where there should be Trouba and ADA getting reps ahead of him? Don’t forget Fox. He is not even needed for prospects protection like you could have argued last year, not with Trouba on board and ADA having last season under his belt. So how?

Staal on the other hand is the only vet ahead behind Skjei. Hajek, Rykov and Lindgren are behind. Don’t forget the clout Staal has within the organization and respect he gets from all the players.

Smith’s buyout wouldn’t have the same impact and he’s more versatile.

Anyway it wasn’t an easy decision but it’s probably the least of all evils.

There's plenty of players who get moved who aren't desirable, a few have even been moved this offseason, and the only one that had a real significant asset to him was because the acquiring team needed to buy him out rather than just have him on the roster for the year

After much thought I'm sure the Rangers brass goes with the last out. No good deals and you can't buy-out Staal and Smith both.
This kinda solves the cap issue for now, freeing up 5.1M. We have a hit of approximately 80.5 now, Beleskey will be buried, that's about two million in cap space for ADA and Lemieux. This will only hurt and get interesting next offseason. Years 3 and 4 are nothing. 1.43M hit*

Won't miss Shat, wasn't a memorable stay, and we can all righteously blame AV for that. Actually great job, freeing a much needed spot in order to further evaluate our young d-men. It's one year with a significant hit and we have a ton of ELCs for that situation.

Ouch. The cap hit is terrible. It should have been Smith.

Shatty was pretty shitty, but he was probably never 100% healed.

Shattenkirk on the PP was overrated. Even the great Neal Pionk eclipsed him on the PP.

There is no money for CK and what he is going to want . This just gives JG more time to get a fair offer. One would think CK should put up really really good numbers by the TDL. If by some minor miracle we are in a cemented playoff position by then and they don't trade CK by then so be it but I doubt it. Names we will be lucky to get a 3rd rounder for otherwise just keep him and say bye bye after the season.
