Staals game went from horrible to nuclear after the new year.

If shattenkirk was out of shape, what was Staal?
Oh, Staal is horrible. It's just that many, many people over the past few days have suggested that Shattenkirk could "rebound" and turn into a moveable piece. I don't think that was likely.

No one thinks Staal is going to suddenly become a moveable piece.

You may be right, but it won’t be because shattenkirk is “out of shape.”

That’s the issue with the statement I had.

Shattenkirk with a year left is easier to trade than shattenkirk with two years left, regardless of level of play

I just don’t understand why they keep 2 players who are significantly worse than him when they would only add like $900k in dead space in years 3+4. That and the depth in shear volume is better at LD than RD

Shattenkirk is just plain overweight for the NHL/for the type of game he plays. Staal has a brain damage. One of those is in the player's control, the other is not. Staal still gives good effort and overcomes his issues to play NHL hockey. Shattenkirk is on cruise control.

What is the benefit to doing Shatty instead of Smith or Staal?

Truly amazing we couldn't get anyone to take one year of Names.

You get in cap trouble and nobody will help

Somewhere in the world there is a Marc Staal and Brendan Smith exhaling now in relief.

I'm curious -- just how much cap space did they need to clear in order to get under the cap?

Am I missing something about the Rangers cap situation?

If buying out Shattenkirk was all they needed to get under, why has such a big deal been made of all of this for the last few months? Can DeAngelo and Lemieux really equal 4mil? And even so couldn't they just send down Smith as well for the extra mil?
Yeah this solves it, and Lemieux and ADA will both come in near their qualifying offers since they have no arbitration rights/leverage. So, a couple mil?

People don't like it because they wanted this to be solved through trading guys like Namestnikov and Kreider and not using a buyout. And, if it was a buyout, most people seemed to want it to be on Staal.

It also leaves $6M in dead money next year. However, his cap hit would have been $6.5M. So you can look at it as Shattenkirk disappears and we pay some young player $7M (dead money+the ELC of said player). Then the next two years, the money is only $1.4M.

This also means we can keep Kreider and Namestnikov until the deadline and hopefully get a better return than whatever was being offered this summer.

I'm not thrilled but i can live with it. HOWEVER, if this means Gorton tries to sign Kreider long term I will be absolutely livid.

Zero reason for it to have any impact on that decision. Shattenkirk would have been gone after next year so doesn’t even factor into whether or not to give ck 7 years

Easier--if possible. I mean if he was horrible all year, to move him out next year we'd still probably have to attach an asset to get him off the books. You're definitely right; one year would always be easier than two. I'm just not sure he'll ever get back to a level where he's a desirable player. I'm sure someone will give him a small contract now, but that's different than trading assets for him.

It’ll be hilarious if we find out that tons of other GMs are blind too and there’s a market for Staal at the TDL. Wishful thinking but would be interesting.

Also, again, people forgetting the human aspect of the decision. Much harder to buyout a career Ranger than a guy who came here recently and dogged it despite it being his childhood dream.
