Actually, what if this was going to be like the move that Washington pulled with Brooks Orpik, where they sent him to Colorado, who bought him out, then brought him back at league minimum? If Gorton pulls this off he's a God.
No other team could buy him out now. Not that you were serious.

This is the one Gorton move I really question. Would love to know his thinking here. $6 million in dead space in Kakko and Kravstov's last cheap year is a wasted opportunity to stack that roster.

It's 6 mil in dead space in the 2nd year of their ELC, not the 3rd.

Someone will have to explain to me how 6 mil in dead cap space + Fox is infinitely worse than 6.65 mil for just Shatty.

Thanks. I'll stick to legal not math.

So four years of buyout penalty and I believe there’s 1 year that is killer. What year is that? I’m no Cap guru I just have a fairly good idea of how it operates.

What is the 3rd year?

Fox has yet to play a single NHL game.

I think if they waited until his bonus was paid next July they should have been able to wiggle out of the contract. But we've had all these conversations before and they needed the cap space now.

As @Tawnos and I were discussing earlier, this is how the decision sequence probably looked:

Agreed, although I'd probably amend it to read:

1.) Trade Kreider AND Namestnikov/Strome for an acceptable return.
2.) Buyout Smith. Trade Kreider OR Namestnikov/Strome for an acceptable return
3.) Buyout Smith. Trade Namestnikov/Strome for whatever
4.) Buyout Shattenkirk

Presuming you couldn’t move Namestnikov (or Strome IMO, he disagrees) without taking cap back, this was the best option. Neither Smith (nor Staal, though he was never realistic, I don’t think) clears enough room by himself. And if you trade them both, you’ve just doubled the dead cap in years 3 and 4 when the team will actually need it.

I’m a fan of any move(s) that forever end the talks about buyouts and clearing cap space

Lost in all this is Larry was right again.
Except about the timing, yeah.

He has been dialed in this off-season. On Trouba, Panarin. Some Hayes noise mixed in. First mentioned a Shattenkirk buy-out when Fox was acquired.

i could probably buy that nobofy would take him at 50% but i absolutely don’t buy that we couldn’t get creative and buyout names and trade strome with retention. yeah it wouldn’t have been as straight forward but it would’ve been considerably smarter.

Elated, mostly because this keeps 20 on board and that’s important IMO.

Nothing against Shattenkirk but this never fit from Day 1, despite the “hometown discount” (lol). Truly hilarious in hindsight. The childhood NYR fandom only goes so far. Honestly, the dad bod / “shat deuces” thing is embarrassing. You’re 30. Get your shit together you slob. As a professional with a new contract, you have an obligation to give more. Even Quinn’s personal relationship couldn’t save him, and it’s for the best. I obviously wouldn’t have been disappointed to see B. Smith get his pink slip, but this is probably better for all. Enjoy your young family, there are no early retirement spots on this roster.
