It's 6 mil in dead space in the 2nd year of their ELC, not the 3rd.

Someone will have to explain to me how 6 mil in dead cap space + Fox is infinitely worse than 6.65 mil for just Shatty.

Agree. Who will be up for contracts going into next season?

Really bad look here, don’t like it at all from the optics standpoint or strategic decision to buy him out over every other option which included buying out Smith and Staal who are infinitely worse.

This year: Solves our cap problems, opens up a spot for someone to win, even if it's a young LHD playing RD.

Next year: Dead money is slightly less than his cap if he were around. The ~$500K we actually save basically goes towards the ELC for the young player we're inevitably integrating (Miller or whoever).

Subsequent years: Dead money is minimal.

Again, it's not the ideal solution, but I think it's fine. You can say, "Well we could have held onto him and tried to trade him later," but I'm not remotely convinced that a) his play/production would rebound or b) even with money retained, people would want him.

On to the next move, whatever it may be.

As @Tawnos and I were discussing earlier, this is how the decision sequence probably looked:

Presuming you couldn’t move Namestnikov (or Strome IMO, he disagrees) without taking cap back, this was the best option. Neither Smith (nor Staal, though he was never realistic, I don’t think) clears enough room by himself. And if you trade them both, you’ve just doubled the dead cap in years 3 and 4 when the team will actually need it.

One move to solve the cap constraints.

Now they have 3 rentals to sell at the deadline.

Kreider will get you a 1st and a prospect.
Names a 4th. 3rd if he has a good season.
Fast will get a 3rd.

2020 is a very good draft to have extra picks.

shattenkirk second half was better than any season marc staalled has had in five years

there’s just a light year between the two in quality and this reeks of the rangers valuing the wrong things again

Actually, what if this was going to be like the move that Washington pulled with Brooks Orpik, where they sent him to Colorado, who bought him out, then brought him back at league minimum? If Gorton pulls this off he's a God.
If Gorton brings him back, he should be drawn and quartered.

What’s done is done and they’ve sorted out their cap issues for now. Not how I would have gone about it but it is what it is.

The best players better play. Which means if Rykov outplays Staal as badly as Hajek outplayed Staal last pre season, his sub AHL 2nd pairing caliber ass better be scratched until someone gives them a reason to change that.

Except about the timing, yeah.

He has been dialed in this off-season. On Trouba, Panarin. Some Hayes noise mixed in. First mentioned a Shattenkirk buy-out when Fox was acquired.

Solid rebuild for Larry.

As of right now:

Kreider
Namestnikov
Strome
Beleskey
Fast
Georgiev

ADA and Lemieux could be as well.

Kreider and Names most likely will be gone. Beleskey will definitely be gone. Georgiev could be gone if Shesty shows that he's the real deal.

That leaves Strome and Fast, neither of whom will get a significant raise. Unless Strome has a great year, he's likely to get less on his next contract. He will be an RFA and if necessary, we can just let him walk or trade him for cheap.

The other spots can be filled by kids and/or cheap UFA contracts.

What exactly is the downside here other than the Rangers are basically going to pay Fox the equivalent of $7M (his ELC + Shattenkirk's hit) to be the 3rd pairing RD in 20-21?

Well done. Shattenkirk isn't even in NHL shape, no idea how he would bounce back as some are suggesting
All of this stuff. Again, maybe not ideal, but it actually works fairly well.

No brainer there is no way to increase his value without interfering with our top 3 rd. Remember young-ins..always take the larger compensation package and leave nostalgia behind.

Am I missing something about the Rangers cap situation?

If buying out Shattenkirk was all they needed to get under, why has such a big deal been made of all of this for the last few months? Can DeAngelo and Lemieux really equal 4mil? And even so couldn't they just send down Smith as well for the extra mil?

Would have bought out Staal or Smith but it makes sense from where the Rangers want to go.

Guessing JG didn’t like the offers on Names and CK and thought he can do better at the deadline.

Sending Shatty out does open up the 3rd pair right side for Fox.
Also opens PP time for Trouba 1st line and ADA 2nd line PP.
Even if Fox starts in the minors Then he can come up when the time is right.
Shatty doesn’t kill penalties so that’s not a spot he could play.
All in all next years cap hit is nasty but where did Shattenkirk fit. The only hope was he played well and we could have trading him—most likely would have retained anyway.

Thinking JG signs Lemmy and ADA quickly possible one small depth player or a camp invite.

We have too many puck moving defensemen. I have no problem with it. We hold onto Kreider, so I’m onboard for it.

TROUBA — DeANGELO
FOX — SKJEI
STAAL — HAJEK
SMITH

Not the worst I suppose. K’Miller needs to come sooner.
