I mean who wouldn't mind a LW depth of Panarin and Kreider for a few months? Panarin faces opposing top lines and defenders and Kreider feasts on lesser obstacles in his way.
I dont see the reasoning. Kreider would only be taking good minutes from a growing prospect, and its not like you can replace him next year with the limited cap youll have.

Buying out Shattenkirk was the only move to make the Rangers cap compliant without going through so many convoluted hypothetical moves.

The trade market is stagnant. The Rangers can move Kreider and Namestnikov before the February 24th trading deadline.

Deangelo and Lemieux play for their $874,125 one year qualifying offers. They solid seasons and file for salary arbitration next summer.

If Fox needs time in the AHL, Smith slides over the right side.

Shattenkirk was a disaster and a mistake. He reported to his first Rangers training camp out of shape and he proceeded to hurt his knee. Shattenkirk received a cortisone shot at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection in his knee in January 2017 before the Rangers shut him down that season. That knee surgery was far more serious than the Rangers reported. Shattenkirk tried to come back that season and the Rangers told him to shut it down again. He didn't start skating again until June of that year. The Rangers said Shattenkirk would miss 4-6 weeks and it became 5 months before he could skate without any pain.

It was all down hill from there.

I'll add to this--I appreciate Kevin being a Rangers fan and wanting to play for our team but he didn't do the things for us that we signed him to do.....and maybe it's a lot to do with his injury but this move is also what a rebuild is about--you get rid of older players who aren't cutting it anymore and especially ones that have large cap hits. This also causes the least disruption that any other move or series of moves would have caused.

FWIW even if they manage to hang out for the next two years--Staal's, Smith's and even Henrik's day is coming too. The Rangers can't afford to spend tons of $'s on older players who don't perform to expectations. They need to cut bait with them when the opportunity comes along but they also need to do what they do in as smart a way as possible and Shattenkirk instead of Staal--is because of the Trouba and Fox deals and because DeAngelo has earned the right to play more and also because Kevin of the wounded knee was a burden--a player who needed to be sheltered and a player who didn't cut it on the powerplay for us.

Really disappointing that it came to this. Was hoping there was a different plan to navigate the cap crunch with the Trouba and Panarin additions without relying on a buyout. Yet another example of us not being able to show self restraint in the UFA market. Just because someone wants to sign with us doesn't mean we should sign them. I fear the Panarin signing will follow a similar path in a few years.

Don’t feel bad for Shattenkirk. He was out of shape and didn’t maintain his body well here and didn’t play very well. Total flop of a signing.

Yeah I'm not concerned about the optics. It didn't work out. He gets a lot of money still, and can move on.

I also learned definitively with the Redden thing that these kinds of things don't matter to other players. At the end of the day, it's a business for everyone. The players will want to play in NYC regardless.

As @Tawnos and I were discussing earlier, this is how the decision sequence probably looked:

Presuming you couldn’t move Namestnikov (or Strome IMO, he disagrees) without taking cap back, this was the best option. Neither Smith (nor Staal, though he was never realistic, I don’t think) clears enough room by himself. And if you trade them both, you’ve just doubled the dead cap in years 3 and 4 when the team will actually need it.
Exactly. That's how I can around on this. Kind of a wash next year relative to keeping (and not playing) him... and better in the outer years that really matter.

The whole thing's a shame though. The guy took a shorter term deal to play here. Silver lining - the buy-outs not nearly as painful as it would have been for one of the really bad FA contracts we've had recently. his signing actually made sense - you can't foresee the injury, it's just an inherent risk with any player.

Why would anyone feel bad for him? He's going to be getting paid in full on his contract AND now sign another contract on top of that. I'd say he made out pretty well.

To add to this, professional athletes have "I won't suck like the last guy" mentalities.

Oh, Staal is horrible. It's just that many, many people over the past few days have suggested that Shattenkirk could "rebound" and turn into a moveable piece. I don't think that was likely.

No one thinks Staal is going to suddenly become a moveable piece.
He didn't need to "rebound", what he needed was to not have some of the worst on-ice shooting percentages in the league.

Whatever, what's done is done. I just think the idea that he was bad last year is ignorant. If you look past the surface he actually was basically what he always has been and would have been perfectly fine this upcoming season. Won't be surprised at all if he puts up his usual point totals elsewhere.

The Rangers and Gorton have had an A+ off season AFAIC--Trouba, Fox, Kakko, Panarin--the signings of Kravtsov, Shestyorkin, Rykov and Reunanen. Shatty underperformed his contract and the Rangers needed space to get compliant and if we're moving Kreider--we're going to need to wait or we'll just get junk back which to me is what would really be unacceptable. Nobody is going to be trading their 1st rounder to get him now.

He's going to pay taxes up the creek with dual incomes.

So basically “he got unlucky” and his play really didn’t drop? Yeah that’s a pretty hot take.

Shatty also had the highest % of offensive zone starts (56.6) of any regular on the Rangers last year and got 28 points. Most all of our players were under 50. Contrast that with DeAngelo who had a 45.4 for offensive zone starts and outpointed Kevin with 30 in 12 less games and outpointed Kevin on the power play too. Staal is interesting too in that stat as he had the most defensive zone starts for the Rangers--61.4. Trouba by the way had 51.2 and put up 50 points but on a Winnipeg team that put him pretty close to the bottom in that stat on his team.

It's not possible to simultaneously be a worse player than you used to be but also get unlucky?

1) “didn’t need to rebound” says to me that he didn’t decline or get worse

2) I’m looking at his OiSH% since over past few years and don’t see an outlier or anything saying he’s bound to progress...

He's worse than he used to be but is still good and was very unlucky.

Staal is just terrible

Smith is adequate.

Oh no- what kind of message will this send to UFAS! Or players who grew up as Rangers fans? Blah blah blah. Shatty wasn't a good product anymore, gotta take him off the shelf. I appreciate that he didn't complain and took everything in stride when he got scratched/benched those few times he really sucked. I'm sure he will find a taker soon enough, he can obviously still play but probably isn't an all-star anymore.
