I've been overseas and have missed the preseason games thus far, but I've been following chatter.
Howden looked great to start last year and then burned out. The concussion along with the rigors and longer schedule of the NHL are all potential reasons for it. He looked less engaged in my opinion, but he still showed flashes here and there.
If he's lacking to start this year, he shouldn't be given a pass. He needs to establish that consistency and needs a strong work ethic whether or not he's scoring. Let's see how he does with skilled wingers.
If Lias is showing that tenacity, then he should get minutes. I want all three of LA, Chytil, and Howden to succeed, but it needs to be on merit, and holding them accountable is, in my opinion, the best way to help them develop.
My biggest problem is the way the Rangers keep guys in camp way longer than they should. Giving young guys experience is fine, but I think it's better to get the guys who look like they'll make it more time to get into game shape.
