Does Howden really flash skill? I dont know I'd say him and Lias have shown about a similar amount in that regard. I can't say anything about the Philly game because I was unable to watch but in the NJ game I thought he was one of our best players. Also while I agree is not better then Chytil, what has Howden done to say hes better than Lias. Both are atleast on a similar level to one another.
Seriously. I don't get the talk like Howden is so much more skilled or has proven so much more. I seriously doubt Lias would have looked different if he got Howden's minutes last year. Aside from some great shooting luck for a stretch, Howden didn't bring much of anything last year. I hope both can bring more going forward but just talking about what's already happened, Howden really hasn't shown much more.

Micheal is kind of common in Ireland and Haley is an Irish name or at least quite often. I wouldn't be against signing Haley but I don't see a spot for him on our roster now--he'd have to go to Hartford.

I see

I wouldn't mind signing him either, could be good for protection and a goal or two there. As long as he doesn't become the new Glass or I will have a fit

Feel like this means that one of the group hasn't impressed the coaches and GM.

Really think Howden is getting this spot to show if he can be more than the 4th line guy right now. Still say Andersson > Howden this camp from the games.

Strome getting C reps is probably just to see where he fits in.

Chytil is about to find himself on wing again. If that happens, I can see Kravtsov in Hartford to start.

That 2nd pairing

I wonder if DQ already knows what his plan with Lias is, and is giving Howden another top chance to prove something. In the first preseason game, he was...uh...not good.

This may not strictly be DQ thinking Howden > Lias.

No way. He just wants to see how Howden will react in this situation tomorrow night, with two skilled wingers.

Would be awesome if our beat reporter could put a sentence together properly. I read this a few times still have no idea what he’s saying. They do all make the team? They have to do x make team? No idea

I've been overseas and have missed the preseason games thus far, but I've been following chatter.

Howden looked great to start last year and then burned out. The concussion along with the rigors and longer schedule of the NHL are all potential reasons for it. He looked less engaged in my opinion, but he still showed flashes here and there.

If he's lacking to start this year, he shouldn't be given a pass. He needs to establish that consistency and needs a strong work ethic whether or not he's scoring. Let's see how he does with skilled wingers.

If Lias is showing that tenacity, then he should get minutes. I want all three of LA, Chytil, and Howden to succeed, but it needs to be on merit, and holding them accountable is, in my opinion, the best way to help them develop.

My biggest problem is the way the Rangers keep guys in camp way longer than they should. Giving young guys experience is fine, but I think it's better to get the guys who look like they'll make it more time to get into game shape.

I also think Strome playing center makes him more valuable on the trade front. That might have something to do with it as well

Thought Fil has done a decent job patrolling center ice and supporting his wingers thus far at center. Struggled in the dots like a lot of young guys do so that's expected and a growing pain you deal with.

Good timing on his center swings and support on the forecheck. I mentioned this in the GDT, but he changed sticks. He used to use a stick with CCM Ribcore Graphic on it. I noticed he's been using a stick with Bauer NExus graphics. The stick looks longer too or the lie is different, he's been controlling the puck further from his body. When he was using that Ribcore twig, the puck was alot closer to his feet and he didn't have much reach and protection with it.

And excited to see Panarin and Kakko and that deadly 1st PP unit again tomorrow night.

Meaning none are guaranteed a spot. They all still have to make the team.

This.

We all agree Howden has the higher offensive ceiling even though we hope it will be Lias to warrant that 7th overall selection.

I haven't been able to watch any of the preseason yet but is his leg strength lending to better balance now as well? Last year he seemed very weak in the lower half and semi constantly was on the ice...
Better but still not great. Agree with his legs moving more and quicker decision making and knowing where to go. But he still has trouble winning 50/50 board battles due to his balance.

Lias will be a great 3c imo and kravstov could work well with him. Assuming a vet is placed on the line, it'll be better for strome to be there, he needs setups and kravstov can do that for him.

I think this is the year Buchnevich breaks out. If he can stick on that top line for the majority of the season, I don't see why he can't get 60 points. That line is going to slaughter other teams. I've always been uber-positive on Buch though.

Why would he make the team based on his play in one game regardless of how good it is? It's one game.

I also don't understand why Reunanen is in the discussion either. Especially when Lindgren is making a solid case. He may not make the team, but he's leading the race to be the first call-up in the event of injury etc.

I mean I hope you're right but 60 points is a pretty high bar. To put that up he'd have to sniff 30 goals or 40 assist and I'm not sure I can see Buch putting up those kind of numbers at this time.

We're still waiting for Kreider to hit 60.

It'll also depend on his role on the PP. The first unit forwards appear to be Zib, Panarin, Kakko and Kreider for now. So I'm not sure how much PPP he'll acummulate this season as he probably projects to be on the 2nd unit the majority of time.

seems perfectly clear to me..all 3 guys need to earn their way onto the team. none are a lock at this point...which is how it should be for any kid until the final roster is set.

RE: Lias and the ongoing 'bottom 6 future only' & ROR comps:

It took a long time for ROR to become that Conn Smythe guy.

Give it time, he is already respected amongst the leaders of that locker room.

These comparisons aren’t helping anyone. ROR had 55 points in the NHL in his year 20 season. Have we even seen a flash of something like that from Lias?
